Teacher Observation and Evaluation/Appraisal
Engaging with teachers in the process of teaching and learning is the goal of instructional leadership, and supervision and evaluation of instruction are at its core.
In this assignment, you will research the mandated teacher evaluation or appraisal process in your state. Then, using classroom video demonstrations, you will observe three teachers providing instruction and evaluate or appraise their performances. You will select areas on which to focus, complete each observation using formative evaluation techniques and tools and make notes on how you will respond and provide feedback to the teacher.Products are specified in the assignment steps.
Step 1Research the teacher evaluation or appraisal process mandated in WASHINGTON STATE. Make note of the key processes, tools, timelines, legal requirements, and ethical implications.
In a 1- to 2-page paper, introduce and summarize the teacher evaluation or appraisal process in your state. Include APA-formatted in-text citations and reference page so your instructor can easily locate the information.
Keep your states process in mind as you conduct observations of teacher performance using video lessons.
Step 2Select threeClassroom Instruction VideosLinks to an external site.from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website for the teacher observations and evaluations/appraisals.
Access theACE Classroom Observation Toolsresource.
Preview at least a portion of each selected video lesson prior to deciding on thefocus areaandobservation technique/toolselection.
From the Formative Assessment of Classroom Practice table within the Classroom Observation Tools resource, decide on thefocus areafor each observation and evaluation/appraisal and the classroomobservation technique/toolyou will use.Vary your technique/tool selection for each observation.
Step 3For each observation, note the following information:
Name of teacher
Title of lesson
Your selected focus area
Your selected observation technique/tool
As you observe and evaluate/appraise each teacher, make notes on how you will respond to the teachers performance and provide feedback.
Before you begin each observation, use the information for your selected technique to create a blank template, chart, or notes document mirroring the example given in the Classroom Observation Tools resource. This will help you use the technique/tool appropriately.
Step 4Using the research you conducted on the teacher evaluation/appraisal process in your state (Step 1) and your observation notes (Step 2), self-evaluate and reflect on your own performance as an instructional leader in using observation to validate and/or improve teacher performance. Did you follow the state requirements in conducting the observations? Did you encounter any legal or ethical challenges? What did you do well? How would you improve your performance?
Capture your thoughts in a 1-page evaluation-reflection paper with a conclusion about this process.
Step 5Compile and submit the products created in this assignment as one document.Start each artifact on a separate page.
