Niran is four years old and currently attends Dandelion Kindergarten. Niran has two sisters, Jaya (12 years old) and Deepti (seven years old). Niran’s family came from Sri Lanka when Niran was fifteen months old. By the time he was 12 months old and living in Sri Lanka, Niran was quite a settled child being cared for by his parents. He, however, was found to have no discernible muscle tone and was unable to sit upright unaided.

Due to political upheaval, Niran’s parents decided to leave their country. Niran’s father, Daya was a qualified engineer but could not find a suitable job and had to work as a taxi driver. Niran’s mother, Shanti stayed at home and looked after the children but found it hard since she suffered from diabetes. She was constantly tired and had to sleep a lot when her older two children had gone to school. During the times she slept, Niran was left to play on his own or was left with the television on to keep him entertained.

In the first three months of their life in Victoria, life was difficult for Niran’s family since they had to adjust to the new environment. To cope with Shanti’s illness, Daya managed to find local childcare for Niran that did not cost too much money. When Daya sent him to the childcare, he cried for most of the morning session. After three months, he was somewhat settled but the nursery staff had trouble communicating with him. He was generally very quiet and did not like to engage in the activities. He held on to his blanket that he brought from home and got upset when other children tried to play with his things or blanket.

By the time he was three, Niran could utter only certain words and had trouble forming clear words to express himself. He preferred pointing to things when he wanted something. He also still had trouble holding himself up properly. He needed aid from furniture or other people to move around.

How to respond to the case study

When completing your response to the case study of Niran and his family ensure that you:

  1. Introduce your assignment, including an outline of what you will be discussing, including the factor of focus (food and nutrition, parents and home environment, siblings and extended family, peers, educators and early childhood environment).
  2. Highlight the strengths and challenges of the child in the case study. Based on the case study identify the factors that impact the child’s growth and development. Briefly link these to the one domain that has been identified.
  3. Discuss why the highlighted domain is important for teachers to understand. Support your definition and explanations with readings and literature that are relevant.
  4. Discuss strategies to support the child and how this will encourage growth and development.
  5. Reflect on the implications for your teaching practice (what do you now know or understand about child growth, health and wellbeing).
