Chapter 5: Results

This study aimed to investigate ways to bridge the educational gap in accounting teaching practices to female undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia. As previously established, teaching practices refers to the teaching methods, teaching materials, and assessment methods implemented in the accounting courses in Saudi Arabia. To support the investigation tThis study aimed to answer two research questions: How should the teaching practices in female accounting education be structured in Saudi Arabia? (RQ1) and How and by whom should the suggested alterations be implemented? (RQ2). To answer these questions, data were collected via face-to-face interviews with accounting educators from seven 7 public universities in Saudi Arabia (five5 participants from each university). I in addition, to a survey of female accounting students from the same universities was conducted. The interview data underwent content analysis using qualitative data analysis software, NVivo, whereas the survey data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to generate descriptive statistics.

5.2 Theme 2: AdjustedFuture Accounting Teaching Practices (FAATP)

The tTeaching practices implemented in accounting courses in Saudi Arabia are integral forto the success of education processes given their impact on the performance and learning of students. It is broadly accepted that such accounting teaching practices must reflect ongoing changes in the accounting profession in Saudi Arabia including developments in the tasks and roles of professional accountants (Coetzee & Schmulian, 2012). The teaching practices implemented in accounting courses for female accounting students particularly are also important to this study given the potential changes to womens work roles and conditions as part of the Saudi Vision 2030.

The data analysis related to RQ1 resulted in an information set labelled The main theme to emerge from the data analysis related to RQ1 of this study has been labelled AdjustedFuture Accounting Teaching Practices (FAATP). Overall, this theme information set encompassed the participantsaccounting educators insights and opinions on ways to improve current accounting education teaching practices for female students at their university; that is, ways to improve teaching methods, teaching materials, and assessment practices in order to enhance the accounting students engagement in the accountancy course, as well as what could be achieved through such improvements.. Under this overarching theme Within this information set were the following five sub-themethemes as revealed in the data analysis. Each with their own sub-sub-themethemes, these sub-themethemes target specific domains or practices to support improvement as identified by the accounting educators.

Theme FATP 1.5.2.1 Partnerships with the ProfessionPartnerships with the profession in this context refers to the collaboration between university accounting faculties and the accounting profession in Saudi Arabia. They have an integral role in ongoing quality improvement initiatives for accounting courses to help prepare graduates for their entry into the accounting profession. Partnerships are characterised bymean the connection between educational and professional bodies with thethat aims to bridge the gap between them. This relationship helps each body to understand what i's occurringgoing on in the other side of the other partys spaceaccounting picture. As such, tThey can share their needs and concernsproblems andfor each part then work together to resolve anythese difficulties. Both partiesof them can get benefits from these partnerships. and may involve undertakingThe partnerships could be common researches, guest speakers from the accounting sectorindustry, and cooperative training programs and workshops training for employees. The importance of building or improving the partnerships between the university and the accounting profession was the most commonly raised suggestion by accounting educators (n = 17) to improve the accounting education course for Saudi female students. During interviews this concept was mentioned 34 times, and at least once by an accounting educator from each university discussed this concept.

The analysis revealed Ppartnerships with the Profession as a way to improve student engagement was considered in relation to three aspects by the accounting educators. These aspects are (1) Academic Educators and Accountancy Firm Partnerships, (2) Educational Professional Support, and (3) Cooperative Training Programs. Each of these aspects is described in detail below: 5.2.1.1 Academic Educators and Accountancy Firm Partnership

The suggestion was raised that universities form relationships and partnerships (U5/5) with accountancy firms in Saudi Arabia to ensure that accountancy firms have increased direct for the latter to facilitate more direct engagement opportunities. This was perceived as being potentially benefiting accounting students because it would provides educators and accounting students them with opportunities to engage with real-world accountancy practices. ; for example, actual data analysis practices when conducting internal audits. Current learning activities around conducting internal audits are limited in that accounting educators find it difficult to source real-world practical cases to engage accounting students in actual internal audit data analysis due to confidentiality concerns. As one accounting educator remarked: if there is an agreement between the university and one of the companies that they come and explain internal auditing in real practice or the students to visit an auditing department in these companies it will increase the link to the labour market (U1/2)It emerged from the analysis that the centre objective of such partnerships was to establish more direct links between the university education programs and the accountancy sector in Saudi Arabia. As noted by one participant accounting educator We aspire to have a direct connection between us and the labour market (U6/2).

Of concern to some participants accounting educators was that they are were too far removed from accountancy labour marketaccounting practice and were therefore unable to properly represent at time the professional reality (U7/6) of accountancy practices facing accounting graduate students.

This prompted a number of participants accounting educators to suggest that partnerships with accountancy firms could extend to faculty members potentially being placed on secondment in accountancy firms orms for one or two months to remain up to date with their knowledge of current accounting practices. The following two comments from participants provide an insight into their reasoning:

This proposal [to assign a faculty member to work in an accounting office], if implemented, would bridge approximately 80% of the gap between what is taught academically and the practical reality. (U3/3)

We [accounting educators] explain in terms of a purely academic aspect and have no experience of practical reality. (U6/1)

An example of such partnerships include: actual data analysis practices when conducting internal audits. Current learning activities around conducting internal audits are limited in that accounting educators find it difficult to source real-world practical cases to engage accounting students in actual internal audit data analysis due to confidentiality concerns. As one accounting educator remarked: if there is an agreement between the university and one of the companies that they come and explain internal auditing in real practice or the students to visit an auditing department in these companies it will increase the link to [accounting practice](U1/2)

Another way in which some participants thought educational professional support partnerships with accounting firms could be developed is through the organisation of field trips (U6/1) to accountancy firms by the female students. Put succinctly by one educator: I hope that field visits will be intensified. (U3/1)This suggestion seemed to emerge from the view that such field trips not only responded to the interests of the accounting students but could deliver them more engaging learning experiences. One educator stated: female students are enthusiastic [about] making visits, so the female students became excited. This improves the performance of the female students in the sense that when [they] see work on the ground and start to imagine themselves in the future, this positively affects their performance. (U1/3)Alternatively, some accounting educators suggested the partnerships between universities and accounting firms could take the form of formal on-site visits to selected accounting firms by the accounting students. Similarly, this suggested emerged from the view that promoting and implementing real world learning opportunities for the students would engage them more in the accounting course by giving them experience of how the labour market operators. As stated by two participants:Why dont we make trips for female students like Dr. Salama[name removed] where she took them to the Shura [identify removed] Council and showed them what work in real life looks like, and how meetings are held. (U1/1)I also wish to pay attention to the field visits to companies before graduation to deal with real people working on the ground to prepare for their fellowship. (U2/4)5.2.1.2 Educational Professional Support

Several participants from accounting educators also conceptualised partnerships between the universities and accounting firms in terms of providing educational support. That is, representatives of accountancy firms preparing and implementing delivering learning activities around real-world accountancy practices with the accounting students using. Similar to the rationale for building partnerships around lecturer secondments or on-site visits by students discussed above, the accounting educatorsparticipants indicated that program content prepared in collaboration with accountancy firms would allow the learning activities to extend beyond the theoretical or academic applications of accounting practices into real-world applications. This sentiment was summed in the following comments:

because in reality the information we give to students is from an academic reality perspective and I cannot substitute for the professional aspect such as a person actually practicing the profession in fact. (U7/6)

Why not do practical training by allowing someone who is working in the labour marketprofession to come, explain and introduce the students to the actual practical reality. (U1/1)

to develop this course [we should] bring professional practitioners to give [lessons] in contemporary issues or auditing or programs, but these are ideas that we have not worked on yet. (U5/0)

The issue of professional standards was also raised during interview by the participant from the NCAAA. Specifically, the participant referred to the through its NCAAAs agreement with SOCPA, aims to define professional standards for universitythe accounting education programs, with the aim toof linking the learning outcomes to the accounting professional market directly more directly. He explained:WIn fact, we [the NCAAA] are looking forward to a greater role in raising for professional Commission in this aspect. We look forward tothe a higher level of credibility by judging the quality of program outputs, as through the presence of accurate indicators that reflect the quality of outputs in accounting professionprograms or others. (A/2)

Another way in which accounting educators thought educational professional support partnerships with accounting firms could be developed is through the organisation of field trips (U6/1) to accountancy firms by the female students. Put succinctly by one educator: As for accounting, I hope that field visits will be intensified. Similarly, this suggested emerged from the view that promoting and implementing real world learning opportunities for the students would engage them more in the accounting course by giving them experience of how the labour market operators. (U2/4)5.2.1.3 Cooperative Training Program

The third sub-sub-themetheme to emerge under the sub-themetheme of Partnerships was related to improvements to the industry-based training opportunities provided to the female accounting students. Most universities are interested in cooperative training programs because they believe theythat areis effectivethe best ways for accounting students to learn the practical parts of accounting skills. The cooperative training program was initially relatively weak andnot strong enough in the beginning. It requiredtook review and modificationstime byfor both educational and professional bodies to adjust it. IMostly, it was initially an elective subject for accounting students beforeuntil it becoaminge a compulsory subject for all accounting graduates. TheAccounting students could get benefits to accounting students from their participation inthis the cooperative training program include. Some students the possibility ofcould getting employeda job aton the location place of thewhere they had training program or. Others could the opportunity to build a professional networksing that might to help them find employmentto get a job somewhere or start their own business. This is referring to the programactivities within the accounting course where for the students to can gain formal practical experience in accounting at an agreed accountancy firm. As stated by one participantaccounting educator:

There should be sufficient [industry-based] training for female students for two semesters instead of one semester we give them. (U2/4)

It was mentioned by one educator that improvement in this area was needed because students currently have the option to either go to cooperative training or study additional subjects at the end of the semester. (U3/2)

Results from the SOCPA participant interview responses, however, revealed that some believed that the privatization of universities may be the only solution to ensuring the accounting education courses can keep pace with industry developments. As one SOCPA member participant explained, private universities have proven to be more successful than public universities in making adaptations and modifications to their courses in line with developments in the industry:Privatization has many advantages and I expect it will cause competition between universities. Each university will make a great effort to improve its outputs so that more students come to it because the more students, the greater the funding The concept of work culture is absent [in public universities] and there is no accountability, All that matters to them is obtaining the academic accreditation and fictitious achievement. (P/1)Theme FATP 2. 5.2.2 Influence of Culture and Other FactorsCultural, religious and social practices in Saudi Arabia have long influenced the planning, implementation and evaluation processes of degree courses in the higher education sector. This includes the provision of accounting education courses for women and men, with institutional separation based on gender. This , and has implications for the teaching practices undertaking in the context of female accounting education. to meet the requirements of accounting education programmes.The second most common suggestions from the accounting educator participants (n = 7) for ways to adjust accounting teaching practices at universities for female accounting students was in relation to the influence of culture and other factors (mentioned 14 times during interviews withby four universities from accounting educatorsdata collection).

4.1.2.1 V.3 Vision 2030

The Saudi Vision 2030 isa strategic framework which aims to support a reduction in Saudi Arabia's dependence on oil and to support the diversification of its economy. It is also a framework develop the nations public service sectors including health, education, and infrastructure (Government of Saudi Arabia, n.d.). The data analysis revealed the views of participants from accounting educators of the need to adjust accounting teaching practices at universities to better reflect the Saudi Vision 2030. In turn, some participants accounting educators believed the accounting courses at their universities would be more engaging for the accounting students is the learning materials and teaching methods were more aligned with the goals and objectives of the Saudi Vision 2030 framework. The following are comments from participants accounting educators expressing this view: Also, we will not depend only on oil, and we have to work on ourselves in several other areas, and therefore we have to prepare students for that. our role as an educational institution is to increase awareness. (U2/3) we have to clarify the role of accounting and how it serves the Vision of 2030. Because the Vision has several axes, and all these axes have benefits for our studentsaxes contain others. (U3/1)5.2.2.1 Work Environment Challenges for Female AccountantsAnalysis of the participants from accounting educators interview responses revealed that some believed there was the need to adjust the teaching practices in accounting education courses at universities for female students. In particular, they pointed to the need for the teaching practices to respond to and reflect the initiative to empower Saudi women in the workforce as part of the Saudi Vision 2030. As stated by one participantaccounting educator:

In government education the curriculum is facilitated for female students, and this is considered as a weakness because it negatively affects the outcomes and influence [for women] in the workplaceslabour market. (U1/2)

The general sentiment to emerge from the analysis was that there needed to be greater freedom given to educators to adjust their teaching practices in order to better provide female accounting students with a stronger voice in terms of their career options. That is, to be able to compete more successfully against their male counterparts for accounting jobs and to achieve more equitable outcomes in the workplace. This sentiment is expressed neatly in the following comment:

I notice that most sectors now have male and female employees in the same place without any barriers, and of course society is fighting this idea. So we have to prepare female students for this. (U2/3)

The type of preparation mentioned by the participants accounting educators include to develop the women's voice, so give them more attention it is taken care of in meetings (U3/2) and to respond to the improvements in the chances of female students getting accepted into jobs (U3/2) as a result of the new preference of chartered accountant firm in Saudi Arabia female rather than male accounting graduates.

5.2.2.2 Soft SkillsThe last aspectone of the work environment challenges for female accountants identified by the accounting educator participants is related to sSoft skills. This in this contextthat refers to preparation around how the female accounting students will work in an accountancy firm (upon graduation). That is, skills in relation to both their interactions with others in the workplace (e.g., communication skills, listening skills) as well as to the way they manage their work tasks (e.g., time management skills, prioritisation skills). As suggested by one participantaccounting educator, there was room to improve the accounting teaching practices at the university to better respond to the female accounting students soft skills requirements. She expressed this view as follows:

In order for us to prepare our female students for tomorrow, we need [to develop] their skills and knowledge how to research and learn and know how to take responsibility and how to work in a team. These are the skills they need. (U4/10)

Other results from the SOCPA participant interview responses show that there are many challenges are facing the female accountant in the professional sector. This makes the demand for female accountants might be differ from that of male accountants in the professional sector. Thus, this affects the claims of the female accounting professional sector, which are completely different from those of the male:In fact, I see that women face some obstacles in accounting workplaces, partly related to culture. (P/1)These culture challenges come from both sides. It comes from female accountants and their familys that female graduates or their families want a private work environment (P/1). However, only 20% of the workplace in accounting offices who provide female with the appropriate environment for them. The workplaces side also have their own culture challenges. Some professional bodies believe that female accountants increase their costs (P/1). Employers think that female may be more expensive especially if she is married, she may become a pregnant and stop working for two months (P/1) Sometime the workplaces are not suitable for female when there is no private place or bathrooms for female (P/1). 2.3 Scholarship AbroadA number of participants from accounting educators cohort revealed during interview that they had spent some time studying abroad. They indicated that this helped them to develop a deeper understanding of how accounting education courses are implemented internationally, familiarise themselves with the similar and different types of resources (i.e., textbooks) being used, and to get ideas about how to improve the accounting education course. However, undertaking scholarship abroad has particular implications and challenges for female accounting students. It is increasingly expected by universities and the accounting sector in Saudi Arabia more broadly that accounting students will undertake postgraduate studies overseas to get experience of different systems and practices and therefore enhance their overall professionalism. However, this can present challenges to females accounting students due to cultural and religious expectations that she is accompanied abroad by a male chaperone, typically a male family member.Notwithstanding this complication, as revealed in the following comment, one participant from accounting educators pointed to the way universities could better utilise faculty members with experience studying abroad to develop accounting education course programs:The University Education Development Center mission is to develop education in all colleges. Its outputs are a university education development diploma which is directed to new faculty members who return a semester studying abroad and then applies it [new learning] to a course and develops it. Language use in the context of accounting teaching practices at the participating universities refers to the course lectures and learning materials being delivered in Arabic or in English. A third sub-themetheme to emerge from the data analysis under the broader theme of adjustments to accounting teaching practices is related to the language used by educators when preparing and implementing the accounting program. This was mentioned 11 times by during interview by accounting educations (n = 8) from three universities. Similar to other sub-themethemes already discussed, the data analysis revealed a number of sub-sub-themethemes related to language use.

5.2.3.1 Both Arabic & English Languages

The data analysis result reveals several accounting educators believed that accounting education could be improved by associated improvements with accounting teaching practices with delivering the learning contents of accounting some subjects in English rather than Arabic. The reasons cited by the educators for this suggestion were mainly related to the views that developing the students English language skills by delivering the subject contents in English is a necessity as English is the language of international business. Also, delivering learning content of some accounting subjects in English would help the female accounting students to become more well-rounded practitioners. The following comments from participants from accounting

educators reveal this perspective:

One of the most important things that we think about is to strengthen the language ability for accounting students through extra-curricular courses and linking them to SOCPA and the Community Service College (U1/0)

Secondly, there are courses that are better to be taught in English, and what is happening now is that with every course there is a list of English accounting vocabulary. I want pure finance accounting in English or at least part of it taught in English because most companies deal in English now (U1/3)

this plan is sincere in dividing the subjects into Arabic and English language subjects. For example, accounting principles will be studied in Arabic in order for the student to understand it. Then when the student approaches the specialization, she will be taught in English. Change is required and curricula must be changed. (U2/1)

I am with teaching accounting in both Arabic and English, but I hope that there is more emphasis put on they the English language for the benefit of the female students. (U3/2)

5.2.3.2 Separated English Section

Some participants from the accounting educators group (n = 2) even suggested the way in which accounting education could be improved at universities is to have the option to study the entire accounting course in English. As the comments presented below reveal, these participants from accounting educators believed that making this type of adjustment to course delivery would allow the female accounting students to better tailor their studies to their future career goals:

Of course, there are some universities that teach an accounting subject or two in English. Were thinking to create a separate accounting program in English, to be attended by students who have obtained certain grades in English. (U1/0)

I think that accounting should have two axes, one in Arabic and another in English. So that it is according to the students orientation after graduation. Does she want to work for a company or to do postgraduate work? (U3/3)

5.2.3.3 Scholarship AbroadA number of accounting educators revealed during interview that they had spent some time studying abroad. They indicated that this helped them to develop a deeper understanding of how accounting education courses are implemented internationally, familiarise themselves with the similar and different types of resources (i.e., textbooks) being used, and to get ideas about how to improve the accounting education course. However, undertaking scholarship abroad has particular implications and challenges for female accounting students. It is increasingly expected by universities and the accounting sector in Saudi Arabia more broadly that accounting students will undertake postgraduate studies overseas to get experience of different systems and practices and therefore enhance their overall professionalism. However, this can present challenges to females accounting students due to cultural and religious expectations that she is accompanied abroad by a male chaperone, typically a male family member.Notwithstanding this complication, as revealed in the following comment, one accounting educator pointed to the way universities could better utilise faculty members with experience studying abroad to develop accounting education course programs:The University Education Development Center mission is to develop education in all colleges. Its outputs are a university education development diploma which is directed to new faculty members who return a semester studying abroad and then applies it [new learning] to a course and develops it. (3/2)5.2.3.4 3 Converted to Arabic

It is interesting to note, however, that some participants from accounting educator participants believed a better way to adjust (and therefore improve) the accounting teaching practices at their universities was to teach all subjects in Arabic only. Put succinctly by one educator:

I hope that the focus will be on the Arabic language. (U2/3)

For these educators, a better way to engage the female accounting students would be to avoid all complications associated with student having low English proficiency and therefore struggling to comprehend the learning materials. This view is reflected in the following comment:

I wish to convert the curriculum from English to Arabic because it is very difficult for students to comprehend because of their language background. I feel if the curriculum were in Arabic, they would understand more. (U2/4)

5.2.3.5 Language of Financial Statements in the Saudi Labour Market

Further to the issue of which language, Arabic or English, should be used to deliver the course contents and prepare the learning materials, some participants from the accounting educators group targeted the use of financial statements in Arabic only as an adjustment to improve the learning engagement of students. Analysis revealed that these educators considered the female accounting students abilities to apply accounting practices to financial statement written in Arabic as a higher priority that being able to apply such practices to statements in English. This is because the students will likely be working in accountancy firm in Saudi Arabia where most financial statements will be prepared in Arabic. As one participant from accounting educator participants expressed it:

Im with teaching English but not the accounting subjects because we teach statements in English but when extracting statements and working in real world, we see that the statements are in our own language which is Arabic. (U1/1)

Theme FATP 4. 5.2.4 CurriculuLearning Resourcesm

What educators teach in accounting education courses and the teaching practices they employ are determined by the design of learning resourcescurriculum. Currently in the Saudi higher education sector, curriculumearning resources design is broadly expected to reflect the Saudi Vision 2030 and its goal is to prepare graduates with the skills and attitudes they require to both adapt to and contribute to social progress and change (Yusuf, 2017). Vision 2030 aims to iImprove and develop accounting programs in all higher education institutions to keep pace with progress and development at the global level. It enhances the educational process in order to access the modern teaching practices that it useds in presenting and presenting science. Also, the vision leads to provide an appropriate educational environment represented in the provision of educational resources that help to build scientific, professional and economy progress.The fourth sub-themetheme to emerge from the data analysis regarding the participants from accounting educator participants views about the required adjustments to their teaching was in relation to the curriculum. This was mentioned by 10 educators across all seven universities a total of 11 times. The educators pointed to three aspects of the curriculum particularly as the domains for the required adjustments; namely, local cases study, SOCPA, and text book resources.

5.2.4.1 Local Case Studies

Several participants from the accounting educator cohorts indicated during their interview that the female accounting studies would benefit from more local case studies of accounting practices and issues be incorporated into the accounting curriculum, The participants from accounting educators suggested that more use of local case studies for learning materials was needed because this is what the female accounting students would likely be engaging with when working as accountants in Saudi Arabia. As summed up by one educator:

In terms of applying the practical cases under study to Saudi systems, governments and companies such as (Mobily-Zain) because these are the places where they [students] will work in the future. (U1/1)

As indicated in the participant quote above, some accounting educatorthe participants from accounting educators believed that there were benefits for the accounting students to be accessed from universities working closely with accountancy firms and industry regulators (e.g., SOCPA) in Saudi Arabia to provide local case studies of accounting practices and issues for inclusion in the curriculum. The quote from one participant from accounting educator below illustrates the view of several educator participants that such adjustments to the curriculum through the inclusion of local case studies would help to make the learning content more relevant to the future career practices of the students:

In fact, I hope that the professional bodies will provide us with practical cases where we form partnerships with these bodies and provide us with training opportunities These are practical cases that we benefit from. (U7/6).

In addition, the participants from the accounting educators group suggested that the inclusion of more local case studies as learning materials in the curriculum was needed for more practical reasons.; That isnamely, for the educators to avoid having to translate foreign case studies to make them compatible with what is being studied (U7/6) and to compensate for the lack of suitable case studies in Arabic online. These issues are expressed in the following quotes, respectively:

Secondly when translating textbooks, it comes to translating the practical cases, we convert the currency and names and everything that increases linking to our culture. (U1/1)

And because our study is Arabic, it is difficult, for example, if you ask the students to search for a topic such as the target cost and search for Arabic references, they do not find it. (U7/6)It also emerged from the data analysis that practical applications in relation to their teaching methods referred to greater use of authentic rather than theoretical accounting cases for analysis. This is related to the suggestions made by some participants from accounting educator participants discussed above to adjust the curriculum to include more Saudi-based case studies. Put succinctly by the following educator:I hope there is an increase in the case study. Attention should be paid to practical application more than theoretical. (U2/4)The theoretical aspect only is not enough for students. There must be practical application, and this aspect can be covered by study cases. (U6/3)Moreover, as with the rationales mentioned for making the other adjustments to teaching methods above, applying more practical cases in the learning program was associated with delivering more real-world learning activities to the female accounting students. As one educator stated:I hope that there will be more practical cases in the Audit subject that will increase the link to the labour market and reality. we have to teach them [accounting students] the technical skills and programs that they must use, or at least to guide them to self-learning, (U3/2)

5.2.4.2 SOCPA Text Books

Regarding the use of textbooks more specifically, although the participants from the accounting educators group generally regarded them as an important learning resource in the accounting course curriculum, some suggested SOCPA textbooks that were translated by SOCPA, that should be more widely used. Put succinctly by one educator:

I wish to add the SOCPAs book to be a reference for students. (U2/4)

This adjustment to the curriculum was also mentioned as potentially beneficial by other educators because they viewed the SOCPA textbooks as a useful resource for introducing and engaging the accounting students with the IFRS as well as for learning about foreign accounting systems:

The use of SOCPA textbooks is very nice as they follow (IFRS) and therefore they are applicable. (U1/1)

It becomes good to teach SOCPA and translated textbooks. This is because our accounting system has become similar to foreign systems. (U1/1)

Further reinforcing the need to improve teaching methods by providing students with real-world case studies and learning materials, several participants from accounting educator participants mentioned the possibility of using simulation activities to engage the students and improve their accounting skills. Specifically, the participantseducators mentioned such practices as the use of a virtual company (U3/3) or creating a miniature environment similar to the external auditing environment (U4/0) to better familiarise the female accounting students with typical accounting practices performed in accounting offices and firms. This reflects the emphasis on engaging students in practical applications rather than theoretical analyses of accounting practice cases mentioned in the discussion of other suggested adjustments above. Moreover, the use of simulation was considered by the educators to potential improve the way the accounting course prepared the female accounting students for the labour market. This sentiment is revealed in the following view from one educator: 5.2.4.23 ResourcesTextbooksSOCPA has taken the initiative to translate the newest accounting textbooks to ensure that accounting outputs keep pace with accounting developments in Saudi Arabia and the world:When we searched for updated Arabic textbooks, we found that the book did not suit or fit international standards and most of them were old Therefore, SOCPA adopted the translation of major books in financial accounting and intermediate accounting (P/1).. we [SOCPA] always updated our textbooks and adds everything that emerges from the standards(P/1). These textbooks have published and taught in USA, Canada and Australia. They are reviewed and supervised by one of the good authors in the world of accounting (P/1)I hope also that the focus will be on textbooks. (U2/3)

In addition to the integration of SOCPA textbooks into the accounting course curriculum, a related suggestion mentioned by the participants from accounting educator participants was to adjust both the types and the uses of resources. In particular, the participants referred to the integration of more interactive teaching resources and those more targeted to the requirements of the accounting course to potentially improve teaching practices to female accounting students and their level of engagement in the course. Regarding more interactive resources specifically, one educator referred to a textbook she had used while studying abroad that was linked to designated website. She described how promoted This provided the accounting student learnings because they hadwill the opportunity to complete the textbook accounting activities online in a more interactive and engaging way. As the educator described it:

When I went and studied abroad, I discovered the same book that I taught in the subject of accounting principles. Tthe author [of the textbook] had created a page on a website so that when the student incorrectly solves a specific exercise the site changes the question in another way, and he has 7 attempts to solve the same question. (U1/4)

The participanteducator (U1/4) went on to describe other benefits to teachers and students from the utilisation of technology-linked textbook resources in the accounting education course. They includeding that there was no longer a need for manual delivery of the assignment, it could create practical cases and store quizzes for the students to complete, and it was a place for student to find their grades quickly. As such, the educator believed that the utilisation of these technology textbooks could provided students with more help to streamlined and easier access tothe delivery of aspects of the different elements of accounting course to students. She stated:

Almost 75% of the work came from the same book, so when they buy the book, they buy this package with it all up to the question bank for the final exam. (U1/4)

Moreover, it emerged that some participants from the accounting educator cohorts were of the view that accounting teaching practices at their universities could be improved for the accounting students if the teachers had access to a wider range of suitable textbooks. This was viewed as important to improving teaching outcomes because it provided a platform for the students to engage with a broader range of perspectives on accounting issues and approaches to developing students accounting skills. The educator stated:

I have [an issue], which is the restriction of the professor and the students to one approved textbook. I see there is little freedom for the professor too set the main lines by limiting her resources only to one book. (U5/8).

Of most concern to the participant from accounting educator (U5/8) was that the limitations around the uses of textbooks in the accounting course meant the students did not have access to different opinions about accounting problems and issues and have the opportunity to develop a critical view about these issues. Lastly, the participants from accounting educator participants also pointed to the need to improve the types of resources incorporated in the accounting course in order to ensure the teaching and learning materials reflect current accounting practice. As stated by one educator:

In fact, the curricula must always be developed at least every 3 or 4 years to [ensure] it still matches the requirements of the period. They [textbooks] must keep pace with the developments that occur in the labour marketworkplace. (U3/2).

Theme FATP 5. 5.2.5 Teaching Methods

Similar to tertiary education institutions world-wide, universities in Saudi Arabia aim to develop their students to be active and independent learners rather than passive recipients of information (Alotaibi, 2019). Achieving this aim can arguably be made more difficult by the traditional lecture-style teaching methods that have dominated education provision in higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia of Saudi Arabiaseveral counties in the world. In turn, the implication for accounting educators in Saudi universities is the need to transition towards a more inclusive teaching approaches (Lawson et al., 2013).

It is therefore not surprising that the fifth sub-themetheme revealed in the data analysis related to adjusted accounting teaching practices to improve accounting student engagement is regarding teaching methods. This potential adjustment domain was mentioned by five participants from the accounting educator groups from three universities a total of six times. Similar to the results reported for the other sub-themethemes above, analysis of the participants from accounting educators interview responses revealed four sub-sub-themethemes or domains for adjustments to teaching methods: student-centred learning style, practical application, smart electronics, and simulation in relation to their views on how the teaching methods could be improved to enhance the engagement of female accounting students in the accounting education course.

5.2.5.1 Student-Centred Learning Teaching Style

The data analysis showed that some participants from accounting educator participants believed improvements could be made to the accounting course at their university through the implementation of more student-centred teaching learning activities utilising social media. Responding to the increasing prevalence of digital technology use in both the personal and academic lives of the female accounting students, some educators indicated the need to integrate the use of social media platforms into their teaching methods to make the teaching learning activities more engaging for the students. As one participant from accounting educator participant explained: Well, now Social Media has become so widespread among female students, the professor can post on her account and there will be a consolidation conversation where she links accounting with their daily lives. (U1/2).

In particular, onethe participant from accounting educator (U1/2) mentioned that social media platforms could be utilised to support student-centred teaching learning styles by providing a direct and daily communication pathway about accounting with students as well as to invite the students to participate in accounting forums (e.g., "Masader"). As she explained: It is also possible to go visit with students to see and invite them to know what is happening in the labour workplace market and reality. (U1/2).

It also emerged from the interview data analysis that some participants from accounting educator participants believed catering toadopting more student-centred teaching learning styles would assist the students to become more confident and capable learners. Student-centred teaching approaches in this context was associated with giving each student room to engage, talk, and express herself in the accounting classroom, which, according to this educator, would: enhance her self-confidence and get used to speaking and explaining herself. (U1/1)

Lastly, adjusting the teaching methods to accommodate more student-centred teaching learning styles was associated with more active rather than passive teaching learning by the female accounting students. The passive teaching learning style adopted by students in the accounting course has been previously established as a concern for many educators (Alotaibi, 2019). In turn, as the following comment from one educator reveals, implementing teaching methods that promote more student-centred teaching learning can help to address this:

The Professor ... hopes that active teaching learning will occur and the students [will] not depend entirely on [her]. (U1/2)

5.2.5.2 Practical Applications Accounting Software

I hope also to focus on the practical side of accounting. (U2/3)

PThe participants from the accounting educator cohorts in this study also suggested during their interviews that the teaching methods of the accounting course could be adjusted positively through the greater emphasis on the practical applications of technology in contemporary accounting practices. The participants from accounting educators acknowledged the central role of technology contemporary accounting and therefore emphasised the need to expand the use of technology in delivering course content. This sentiment was expressed by two educators as follows:

We have computer labs, and they are used in computer accounting applications. but we want to activate it in other courses such as the external auditing, where it is possible to use programs such as Oracle and Sab. (U4/0)

I hope that in every subject in accounting there will be a practical part on technology. Most companies now use accounting programs to do accounting work instead of the old way of accounts and books. I want the practical side to be in the class itself, where when the female student graduates, she can deal with such programs. (U2/1)

This view expressed by the accounting educator participant was echoed by a SOCPA participant during interview. This participant claimed that focusing on the uses of computers in accounting and training programs is an important because the accounting sector expects new accounting graduates to have well-developed skills in this area:I always repeat that universities have to keep pace with the developments and changes that take place in the profession and therefore have to pay attention to the computer. If I have two students, one who can deal with accounting programs but has low accounting level and another who cannot deal with accounting programs but has a high accounting level I will choose the person who can deal with accounting programs even if his level is low. If it were up to me, I would make sure every university has computer labs (P/1)In fact, it emerged from the educators interview responses that despite there being specific programs for accounting and auditing subjects available, here now [in many courses] there is no teaching of any program, not even Oracle (U3/2). As a result, the accounting students had have to locate and download the program and learn by themselves (U4/10). Moreover, some educators highlighted the need to incorporate more practical applications of technology for accounting practices in the courses because this is an area identified by Saudi accounting firms in need of improvement. As revealed in one educator comment:

training bodies always complain to students that they are not good at dealing with programs, especially EXCEL, and this program is considered the basis of for accounting. (U7/2)

Similar to the rationales for the suggested adjustments to teaching methods provided by the participants from accounting educator participants in relation to the sub-themethemes above, the suggested integration of more technology-based practical applications in accounting courses was associated with being more representative of modern accounting. In turn, this was linked to potential improvements in the engagement of the female accounting students in the accounting course because they could interact with relevant technology applications and see how it would benefit them in their future careers. One educator explained it as follows:

We hope that the accounting electronic programs will be introduced, as it is assumed that there is access to all programs and this is in order for the student to benefit and know how to apply the scientific subjecttheoretical material in reality. This is something that can make the link between their subject and reality. This is a very good thing so that students will feel that what they are studying is available in the labour marketsimilar to accounting practice. (U4/6)

It also emerged from the data analysis that practical applications in relation to their teaching methods referred to greater use of authentic rather than theoretical accounting cases for analysis. This is related to the suggestions made by some accounting educators discussed above to adjust the curriculum to include more Saudi-based case studies. As one educator stated:I hope that there will be more practical cases in the Audit subject that will increase the link to the labour market and reality. we have to teach them [accounting students] the technical skills and programs that they must use, or at least to guide them to self-learning, (U3/2)

5.2.5.3 Smart ElectronicsSimilar to the suggestions from the accounting educators to adjust to how technology is used to develop students practical applications of accounting practices (see section 4.1.5.2), some educators also indicted that better uses of technology to perform their administrative responsibilities would help to improve teaching methods. In particular, the educators mentioned the expanded role that smart electronics can have for example when tracking and checking student assignment submissions, providing homework tasks to students, and allocating student grades. These types of perceived benefits were articulated by one educator as follows: One of the beautiful things is that problem solving questions can be issued by Excel directly by My Accounting Lab in the name of the student. If it is sent, it is automatically known that student so-and-so has received it, so grading marks are automatically placed, the system is the one that marks the signs, so I, as a teacher do nothing. (U5/0)

5.2.5.4 3 Academics Assessment Responsibilities

Another sub-sub-themetheme relevant to teaching methods to emerge from the data analysis relates to the academics assessment responsibilities of the participants from accounting educators. In terms of adjustments the educators mentioned the benefits of having more freedom and flexibility to construct the assessments based on their interactions with the female accounting students and their perceptions of their learning needs. This adjustment was linked to such practices as:

[Educators] putting the exam questions for their own subject (U1/1)

[Educators] given the freedom to put questions that they see from their point of view or have more important points in the curriculum (U6/4)

The lack of freedom and flexibility afforded to participants from accounting educators academics to manage their assessment responsibilities was seen by some accounting educator participants as a problem in the final unifying exam approach. Moreover, it was regarded as a particular issue for the female accounting students because their learning program had been reduced or compacted to such a degree that where they:

used to take in two or three subjects is now being taken in one subject so the volume of the material is very large. (U3/3).

As a result, the participants from the accounting educator groups indicated that they needed to be able to adjust their teaching methods for assessing the students in response to what they regarded as an increase in the size of the [accounting education] curriculum (U3/3) and to the allocation of marks in the course for the research conducted by the accounting students (U6/1).

5.2.5.5 Simulation

Further reinforcing the need to improve teaching methods by providing students with real-world case studies and learning materials, several participants from accounting educators mentioned the possibility of using simulation activities to engage the students and improve their accounting skills. Specifically, the educators mentioned such practices as the use of a virtual company (U3/3) or creating a miniature environment similar to the external auditing environment (U4/0) to better familiarise the female accounting students with typical accounting practices performed in accounting offices and firms. This reflects the emphasis on engaging students in practical applications rather than theoretical analyses of accounting practice cases mentioned in the discussion of other suggested adjustments above. Moreover, the use of simulation was considered by the educators to potential improve the way the accounting course prepared the female accounting students for the labour market. This sentiment is revealed in the following view from one educator:

But I heard that one of the universities in the auditing course simulates the subject . In fact, auditing material is rich and whatever we explain, it needs more practical application than theoretical, so if this simulation system is applied, students will benefit greatly and will effectively qualify for the labour market. (U7/6)

Information Set: Shifted Process (SP) OR Change Mechanism (CM)

The main theme to emerge from the data analysis related to RQ2 of this study has been labelled Shifted Process (SP) or Change Mechanism (CM). This theme encompasses the insights and opinions from accounting educators, SOCPA Members, and NCAAA members on two elements. First, how to implement the suggested changes to the teaching practices in accounting courses to enhance the female accounting students engagement in the accountancy course. Second, who should take responsibility for implementing the different changes. Under the overarching theme of Shifted Process (SP) or Change Mechanism (CM) were the following seven five sub-themes as revealed in the data analysis. Similar to the results for theme two presented above, each of these sub-themes have their own sub-sub-themes and target the potential roles and/or inputs to accounting education course changes as identified by the accounting educators, SOCPA Members, and NCAAA members.

Theme SP/CM 1 Assessment of Accounting EducatorsTeaching EvaluationsThe importance of undertaking teaching evaluations assessments of accounting educators (along with making changes to procedures as discussed below) was by far the most commonly raised suggestion. It was mentioned 34 times by 19 accounting educators across 4 universities. The analysis revealed the assessment of accounting educators as a Shifted Process (SP) or Change Mechanism (CM) was considered in relation to three aspects by the accounting educators:

SP/CM 1.1 Preparing Aaccounting Eeducators

During the interviews the accounting educators pointed to the processes around preparing accounting students to become accountaccountantsing educators. Preparation of accounting educators emerged as an issue with particular implications for female accounting students. At the basic level, this preparation includes that accounting faculty members hold professional certificates in their specializations (U3/2). This was seen as a key step towards ensuring that the universities can organise make thflexibilitiese teaching appointments across a range of teaching accounting subject areas. In addition, they mentioned that accounting educators were encouraged to have a professional certificate because this might help them to have a stronger professional relationship with accounting industry bodies and bridge the gap between the academic and professional aspects of accountancy.

It also emerged that the accounting departments at the universities are keen to support and prepare accounting faculty members in both professional and academic aspects to meet the continuing challenges of accounting professional learning education and to bridge the gap with the professional sector. For instance, academic preparation of accounting educators includes support for them to participated in a scholarship program for completion of studies abroad (U6/1). This was considered to help bridge the gap as the accounting faculty member would obtain professional knowledge and/or experience and then pass it on to her students. This was expressed as follows:

It is better for a faculty member to go on a professional mission in order to gain experience from the actual reality and come back and benefit the students. (U6/4)

However, female academics students are often unwilling to do this due to their own social circumstances or to the lack of a suitable PhD program at the overseas university which is an issue that universities are trying to address. As stated by the same accounting educator:

the department is very keen on sending them [female academics accounting students] abroad and even providing them with facilitiesupport more than male academics students (U4/0)

Nonetheless, to help ensure that they universities can provide specialist accounting educators to implement teach the accounting course efficiently, in addition to completing external scholarships, the universities encourage staff to actively pursue professional development opportunities by attending training workshops offered by the university. The aim is to develop the skills of accounting educators knowledge of accounting and equip them with various modern teaching methods to advance the learning wheel according to the universitys vision. As stated by two accounting educators:

As for the department, we always urge colleagues to attend training courses offered by the university and to introduce and develop learning methods, and we also push them to conduct research continuously. (U4/0)

Some educators mentioned the need for more encouragement and support to be provided to the coordinators and educators by department heads to facilitate change in accounting teaching practices. As stated by one accounting educator:There is no encouragement and this is the most important point. She [the department head] is supposed to support her or even give her a reward, so then other colleagues see this and get excited and follow her example. (U1/3)From the technical point of view, there is the Deanship of Skills Development so that we can improve ourselves, raise our level and develop our method of teaching. So everyone chooses what suits her. (U4/10)

This is also reflected in the comments from the SOCPA representative who indicated that the organisation proposed to provide targeted courses and tools to accounting students in universities to reduce the educational gap after their graduation:One of the initiatives that we [SOCPA] intend to undertake is to hold courses in universities, where instead of waiting for students to qualify after graduation, we will organize courses in [targeted] subjects. Student graduates obtain professional certificates that help them to qualify for the job market and also qualify for SOCPA. (P/1)The participant went on to add that SOCPA aims to provide universities with free training packages to make it easier for them to teach professional exams. He explained: Among the initiatives that the SOCPA wants to implement is to give universities their own SOCPA training packages for free, and then the universitys role is to qualify students using the training package (P/1)Lastly, another initiative by SOCPA mentioned by its representative during interview was to provide 1000 seats in accounting offices to train students (P/1) so the transition of accounting graduates into accounting offices could be improved.Moreover, it emerged that the accounting educators appreciate the value of continued professional development. This was expressed by two educators as follows:

it is good for a faculty member to take a workshop they must be familiar with new developments and implementation what matters to us is to have knowledge of this update in order to pass it on to the female students (U4/6)

its possible to attend a specific course about how to make the students more engaged in class or the methods of upgrading the curriculum from the traditional method to other ones where there is a good room for creativity and skill development. (U5/3)

The analysis also revealed that preparation of accounting educators was done in partnerships between the universities and the external government agencies. For instance, the educators are offered information sessions by SOCPA to maintain their contact with, and understanding of, the accounting professional. As one accounting educators remarked:

Sometimes SOCPA offers [education] sessions. For example, subjects such as the Zakat and Tax Authority, it is good for a faculty member to take a workshop, so he is always aware of new developments. (U4/6)

Indeed, it emerged that both SOCPA and the NCAAA have a role in the change mechanism to ensure the university accounting departments are best able to meet the requirements of the professional sector. This is important to the accounting program obtaining academic accreditation for meeting all academic and professional requirements and was explained by the SOCPA representative as follows:

We [SOCPA] communicated with the NCAAA and told it there is a problem in the outputs of accounting education and they accounting departments will not get accreditation unless they meet the NCAAA quality standards We told him them that you are the Authority that supervises all universities, and we see that we as the body of accountants have the ability to help. We want to form a joint working group between us to go to universities and make sure things are going properly (P/1)

Another SOCPA representative provided additional details during interview of the organisations cooperation with NCAAA. He explained that it is mainly represented in two ways: evaluating the undergraduate accounting program exams where the Commission can confirm that the program is cappropriateorrect by performing tests and providing training and consulting to universities regarding accounting professional aspects to help universities develop (P/2).

In addition, it was revealed that opportunities are provided to accounting faculty members to both develop their research skills and their understanding of the real-world applications of their research. For instance, it emerged that universities are continually trying to build links and establish more robust cooperation with the professional community by embedding accounting academics into the community. This was expressed by one educator during interview as follows:

Some universities include so-called houses of expertise in which faculty members are registered, and the university operates as an intermediary between the faculty member and the work bodies so that the member goes and studies the problem and provides a solution from an academic point of view. (U5/5)

Lastly, another aspect accounting educator preparation identified during the interviews was encouragement for accounting textbooks authoring, encouragement for translation. (U6/3). This was considered to help faculty members understand accounting from different perspectives depending on the authoring environment. Also, to help them to consider the social differences in translated books in relation to the Saudi environment.

CM 1.2 Preparing Accounting StudentsDuring the interviews with the SOCPA members, one of the most significant topics was about preparing accounting students for their professional future. This is reflected in the comments from the SOCPA representative who indicated that the organisation proposed to provide targeted courses and tools to accounting students in universities to reduce the educational gap after their graduation:One of the initiatives that we [SOCPA] intend to undertake is to hold courses in universities, where instead of waiting for students to qualify after graduation, we will organize courses in [targeted] subjects. Student graduates obtain professional certificates that help them to qualify for the job market and also qualify for SOCPA. (P/1)The participant went on to add that SOCPA aims to provide universities with free training packages to make it easier for accounting educators to help them teach their students how to pass the accounting professional exams. He explained: Among the initiatives that the SOCPA wants to implement is to give universities their own SOCPA training packages for free, and then the universitys role is to qualify students using the training package (P/1)Lastly, another initiative by SOCPA mentioned by its representative during interview was to provide 1000 places in accounting offices to train students (P/1) so the transition of accounting graduates into accounting offices could be improved.SP/CM 1.2 3 Subject coordinators

Several accounting educators also pointed to role the authority of thate accounting subject coordinator have and might help to make the changes. There is a lot of preparation that must go into the development and implementation of the accounting subjects. In turn, the subject coordinator works with the university administration and other subject teachers to design and agree on any changes or new elements to be included in the accounting course (e.g., new topic areas, examination procedures and so forth). As a result, subject coordinators are an integral part of the process of change in accounting. The role of the subject coordinator was explained by one accounting educator as follows:

So the subject coordinator is like a manager who works with his/her colleagues, discusses their suggestions, and sends them to the department if they are agreed on. If it is an essential element the subject coordinator passes it through the department board then to the faculty board. (U5/3)

Furthermore, as one accounting educator explained, the subject coordinators operate along gender lines:

There is a subject coordinator for each subject. Also, there is a subject coordinator for women and a subject coordinator for men, so if a change occurs in the men's section, the subject coordinator of men notifies the subject coordinator of women. (U1/1)

Other accounting educators also pointed to the role of the Methodology Development Committee in providing suggestions that are commensurate with developments in the accounting environment in Saudi Arabia. This role was outlined by one educator based on personal experience:

I am a member of the Methodology Development Committee, and this includes the course coordinator. We consider the course book as well as the chapters that will be taught and the evaluation methods and objectives. (U6/2)

In turn, the benefits of the subject coordinators role to the preparation of accounting educators are outlined in the following comments from an accounting educator who once had the role of subject coordinator. She draws attention to the change mechanism or process in accounting education and the importance of communication and information sharing as part of the preparation process:

I was in charge of coordinating in the female students' department. The female students were struggling with the textbook as it was new, so we used to monitor the interactions of the students. Every two or three weeks during the first and second semesters there were meetings by phone and me and another female professor colleague used to communicate with 4 or 5 professorscolleagues, 3 of them malesen, and the two other females colleagues. Then we sent our suggestions and thenre was an activation; we made an agreement and deleted a whole chapter from the textbook. (U1/3)

As the same accounting educator also explains, however, there can be challenges to the subject coordinators role. For example, when there are a large number of subject coordinators assigned to courses taught to larger numbers of students who are at a more advance level. This means that there can be challenges around the communication and sharing of ideas. As she explained:

For the Zakat and tax course the female students are fewer, and the female professors are also few. By comparison, the cost course is taught at the fourth level and the number of female students is enormous. and the number of educators is perhaps 10 faculty members and around 10 female educators for one subject. It is difficult for one coordinator to manage these huge number of educators. we are many and the communication is hard. There is a problem with communication, especially if the number is large.and the number of departments is perhaps 10 and maybe 10 female professors. It is difficult because we are many and there is no connection or communication or anything. There is a problem with communication, especially if the number is large.

Lastly, she also pointed to the lack of collaboration at times between the subject coordinators, resulting in the opinions or suggestions of some coordinators not being acknowledged:

no matter what opinion I express, there is no response. Let me say this is a personal problem, not a gender issue. (U1/3)

SP/CM 1.3 4 Subject Educators

Analysis of the accounting educator interview data also revealed, however, that subject educators (i.e., the Professors) also have a role in the change process. This is particularly around changes to students assessment methods as indicated in the following comment:

For example, a Professor wanted to delete a certain part of the internal audit curriculum because she wanted to do a project with the students. She suggested making part of the mid-term exams as a project and another part as homework and engagement. She went to the female head of the department who told her to talk to the head of curriculum committee and if he agrees, then it's done. (U1/2)

The process of change and input from the subject educator was not uniform for all universities, however. As mentioned by some educators, the process in some universities depending on the degree the person holds, with some universities preferring PhD holders. As one accounting educator stated:

When I was in charge of the quality outcomes for two years, I discovered that we do not have a uniform way. Councils and meetings are attended only by Drs and abovePhD holder. As a lecturer wWhen I have a suggestion or addition, I then go to one of my colleagues who is a PhD holderthe female Doctor to convince her to accept the idea. Once she accepts the idea, she proposes it to the course subject sectionmeeting, which is made up of 4 or 5 Doctorsmembers from both male and female sections. After that, it moves from them to the head of the department and is raised in the department meeting. (U1/4)

Whereas at other universities, the subjects educators point of view is considered and presented to the Department Council, regardless of his/her degree. This is indicated ion the following comment:

For example, if a faculty member saw a chapter or a topic something that needed to be developed in the a subject textbook and presented the idea it is taken to the Department Council which discusses if it is appropriate or not. (U3/1)

Further to the process of change, it emerged that the Curriculum Committee of the Accounting Department considers all suggestions from subject educators and submissions to the Department Council. As outlined by one accounting educator during interview:

The mechanism is a meeting of the whole subject's educators course Professors about any proposed subject changes, and then this proposal is submitted to the Department Methodology Committee who then then submits it to the Department Council for approval. (U6/0)

However, what the data analysis results revealed was that the subject educator was typically the starting point to bring about change. This view was expressed as:

Yes, there is a hierarchical pattern or a certain system that we follow but if a subject educator (lecturer) the lecturer wants to change the textbook, then she has to communicate this to the head of department from female section firstthe coordinator. It is not professional to go directly to the head of department from male section supervisor since the system must be followed. (U1/1)

DOES A NEW SECTION START HERE?????

It turns out that the subject coordinator and subject educators roles in the process of change were not the only consideration of accounting educators in terms of the change drivers. Some educators mentioned the need for more encouragement and support to be provided to the coordinators and educators by department heads to facilitate change in accounting teaching practices. As stated by one accounting educator:There is no encouragement and this is the most important point. She [the department head] is supposed to support her or even give her a reward, so then other female professors see this and get excited and follow her example. (U1/3)Another aspect in the assevaluationssment of accounting educators to emerge during interview was the teaching of soft skills to accounting students such as how to present oneself, information to a group and generally interact with others as a professional. According to one interviewee, effective teaching in this regard had to start with the educators commitment to teach these skills to these skills and their practice with students:

Preparing the student for the job market is done through her training in leadership skills, so presentation must be one of the priorities. First impression is very important, and the educational process is not supposed to be in isolation from these things. In addition, soft skills and how to work in a team, and problem solve. Faculty members must strengthen these skills in their students. (U5/5)

Notably, development of soft skills was regarded as particularly important for female accounting students by some educators. That is, they saw it as a vital part of accounting education for female accounting students to take advantage of the developments in Saudi society as well as to serve the interests of accounting students. This sentiment is apparent in the following comment from one educator:

In fact, we see that the vision to establish a balance between men and women is the new challenge. As a female Professor I always tell female students that they have to trust themselves and not underestimate the value of their opinions. I always tell them that they should pay attention to [how they present themselves to others] and that they should be strong and confident. (U4/10)

Theme SP/CM 2. Procedures

As mentioned above, the procedures followed at the universities for implementing the accounting course with female accounting students was identify as an area to address. It was mentioned 31 times by 15 accounting educators across 6 universities. The analysis revealed the procedures as a Shifted Process (SP) or Change Mechanism (CM) was considered in relation to three aspects by the accounting educators:

SP/CM 2.1 Flexible procedures

It emerged from the analysis of the accounting educators interview responses that one way the suggested changes to accounting educators teaching practices to improve female student engagement could manifest is through flexible procedures. This is based on the views of the educators that there is usually a flexible progress plan for the initiatives proposed by faculty members to be considered and then activated in the accounting departments. One accounting educator described the mechanism as follows:

If a faculty member wants to take an initiative and wants to raise it, the initiative is submitted to the head of the department, and then the president submits it to the vice president, then the head of the department vice president submits it to the dean, and then the dean raises it to the university council, and then the member waits until a decision is made. Is there flexibility in the application or not? Most of the initiatives are according to the dean. (U2/3)

Moreover, the accounting educators considered flexibility a key element of the change process in the universities. They expressed the view that when change is required, some change is better than no change and flexibility allows for irregularity until the change is complete, and this is what makes the process of change possible. As one accounting educator expressed it:

Yes, there is flexibility. We do not always wait for a complete change. And what is this mechanism? By talking with the coordinator and then the department head, and then he, in turn, communicates with the dean. (U2/4)

The accounting educators further revealed that there must be flexibility for change because waiting for a specific person may delay the required change process. As a result, a simple suggestion submitted by faculty members may be enough to implement the change: This is because they believed:

there is flexibility in relation to the issue of change and development and acceptance of opinions, [even when] it is a suggestion from the faculty members. (U3/1)

Although, during interview the accounting educators did acknowledge that some changes required more action and were more difficult than others, and therefore that some subject areas need more patience and persuasion (U3/2).

Indeed, several accounting educators mentioned that flexibility in how the accounting course curricula is continually developed and implemented is important for the university program accreditation process. It emerged that the Accounting Department accepts suggestions submitted by members even if they differ slightly with the academic accreditation process. This was identified by some educators when planning the subjects for the female accounting students as they were often required to do subjects that do not benefit [them] (U2/4). As the accounting educator explained:

When we started discussing the study plan for academic accreditation. I was one of those who objected to the accounting subjects being reduced to 10 subjects, including 3 optional subjects that female student study or go to training. And when I looked at the plan I found [many of] the subjects do not benefit students anything. I was very upset about the plan when I saw it and spoke up about it. (U3/3)

The results also show that the accounting departments at the universities are flexible with accepting initiatives from faculty members regarding student assessments and the changes to the textbook. As one accounting educator explained:

For example, we had a book for accounting 201 and some educators thought it had limitations and they changed it. A new textbook was taught for two terms, but we found that the first book was considered the best, so they had a meeting, and the textbook was changed back. So now we have the main book, but we have freedom to use other sources. The official book remains as it is, but you can add the information you want. (U4/1)

What also emerged from the analysis of the interview data is that the accounting educators considered the flexibility in the change process or mechanism to have benefits to the students, universities and education sector. For instance, they consider the flexibility granted to the educational sector by the Saudi government helps to advance educational outcomes, summed up in the recognition that the state's resources go to education, and the state wants improved outputs (U4/12). Moreover, many consider the ease and flexibility of procedures at the universities can improve their links with the professional sector. This was expressed by one accounting educator as follows:

Results of the analysis of the NCAAA participants interview responses also pointed to the important role that accounting profession agencies and representatives can play in the change mechanism, particularly in relation to ensuring that professional accounting standards are applied. As one NCAAA representative stated:After recommendations are sent to universities, each department hire someone to implement the recommendations then send a report to the NCAAA.the associations hire or employ someone to implement them (A/1)SHOULD A NEW SECTION START HERE? One that focuses on the influence of professional practice on change?

CM 2.2 Change Through Professional PracticeAnother result was considered by accounting educators showed that change could be easier for accounting education institutions through professional practice. This is based on the views of some female participants from accounting educators that professional practice gives the accounting education bodies the opportunities to share their knowledge and experience with the professional bodies. Both sectors could get the benefit from this connection and easily transfer it to the accounting students to give them the chance for more engagement with the professional environment. Moreover, many consider the ease and flexibility of procedures at the universities can improve their links with the professional sector. This was expressed by one accounting educator as follows:This is what we want, we need mutual services, as it is possible for the university to do services as consultants and the company can provide an advisory service in return. There will be mutual services between the two parties, and everyone benefits. (U4/6)

In this way, the results indicate that the accounting educators believe there is an important role for the professional sector to play in initiating and implementing proposals for change. They acknowledged that it was good for the university to bring in consultants to upgrade the curriculum and to help the professors with courses (U5/3) and that it was not enough to rely on benchmarks only. Rather, they indicated that input from the accounting profession must be considered when preparing the accounting curriculum. As stated by one interviewee:

The course must be based on labour market advice, so when a course is built it should not be built on the Benchmark of a specific university, but rather it should be based on the needs of the labour market in order to know how to change the course to suit the outputs and changes of the labour market. (U5/5)

One of the demands to follow the professional bodies is by teaching accounting students the international accounting standards. TIn addition, the accounting educators pointed to the need to follow international accounting standards and have flexibility in accounting education in order to take advantage of opportunities to change and develop educators competence. As stated by one educator:

We are always required to improve our performance. Saudi Arabia now follows IFRS and because IFRS is based on principles, not rules, as a person must understand the principles and have sufficient awareness to be able to explain them. Therefore, accountability now demands efficiency and improvement, both for men and women. (U4/12)

However, to ensure these performance improvements and benefits can be realised, a view revealed by some accounting educators was that the accounting education sector needs to establish a body to regulate the relationship between universities and the accountancy sector in order to provide mutual benefits to both parties. One educator explained:

We actually suggested that an intermediary body be established that would coordinate between the university and the private sector. So it is acknowledged there is mutual input and benefits. This is so that the labour market does not come and complain about the outputs after graduation, and they have no right because they had a role from the beginning in training students. (U4/6)

Results of the analysis of the NCAAA participants interview responses also pointed to the important role that accounting profession agencies and representatives can play in the change mechanism, particularly in relation to ensuring that professional accounting standards are applied. As one NCAAA representative stated:After recommendations are sent to universities, the associations hire or employ someone to implement them (A/1)SP/CM 2.2 3 Overcoming Procedures Barriers

The analysis of the accounting educators interview responses also revealed that they considered one of the obstacles to the change process in the accounting education courses at their university was the large number of routine procedures related to the academic accreditation of the accounting program. One interviewee mentioned that the efficiency of the process was challenged because it takes a lot of time in preparing paperwork and electronic files to submit files for each subject which sometimes are not read and because there is often no feedback on the quality of work (U2/4). The other obstacles that analysis also revealed that they considered the professional sector to be most worried about the confidentiality of accounting information and its transfer to the educational sector as case studies. This would present challenges to the training of accounting students, particularly female students, as the professional sector would not agree to give the students any data by virtue of it being confidential (U3/1). The educator did acknowledge, however, that new strategic partnerships (U3/1) with the private sector were helping to address this issue. Nonetheless, the accounting educators considered these procedural barriers to present obstacles to change in the accounting education sector by drawing out the change process. Put succinctly by one educator:

As a faculty member who wants change, you have to submit a request and this is a very long process, especially if you do not have a PhD. (U4/1)

SP/CM 2.3 4 Tutorial

Lastly, the results revealed that accounting educators considered change to be difficult due to the lack of accounting tutorials at the universities. They mentioned that the small number of accounting faculty members and the large number of female accounting students meant that tutorials could not be implemented provided to support accounting Professors and students to share ideas and information outside the lecture rooms. As one accounting educator indicated, this meant that accounting students sometimes lack deep understanding of accounting theory and practice:

The problem in the traditional method is that the professor has to give every single thing and if students have a problem, they have to come to the Professor in office hours. But rarely the students come to ask questions. (U1/2)

On this issue, it also emerged from the analysis that some faculty members who received their education outside Saudi Arabia have sought to propose the use of tutorials to bridge the gaps in accounting education. As revealed in the following comments from the accounting educators, they believed that adding a tutorial may provide a solution by providing more time to engage with real-world case studies and for educators to help students to better understand the needs of the accounting profession:

The main problems lie with regard to the practical process because I do not have time for practical application. There must be an additional hour to provide the education tutorial for the course. (U5/6)

I always say that we need a tutorial for exercises, especially in financial accounting. The problem is that we do not know whether it is in the approved plan or not. (U7/6)

Theme SP/CM 3. Gender Issues

A relatively prominent theme to emerge from the accounting educators interview responses when discussing what changes to accounting education should be implemented and by whom was related to gender issues. This was mentioned 6 times by 5 accounting educators from 2 universities. The analysis revealed that the primary concern or point of interest for these educators was in relation to the challenges around gender bias or inequality manifest in the work environment:

SP/CM 3.1 Work Environment Challenges

A point of consideration for some accounting educators as revealed in the qualitative data analysis was the extent to which having an independent accounting section for women may create challenges around the coordination of the accounting courses. It was revealed that at the universities there was a male course coordinator for the accounting course for male students and a female course coordinator for the accounting course for female students. In turn, as one accounting educator explained, they cooperate to implement the study plans because it difficult to coordinate about 30 faculty members (U4/0). Notwithstanding this collaborative approach, the mixed male and female work environment is still considered a sensitive issue in Saudi society. As one educator commented:

I think society has become more open [about the issue of mixing males and females in the workplace], and there are increasing options for those who accept the mixing. (U4/10). The educator went on to explain that this is reflected in some government sector agencies and companies which work to provide a suitable environment for women (U4/10). However, some faculty members avoid talking about this point to avoid questioning societal beliefs. This is despite modern teaching methods seeking to address this important point, especially when students encounter the cooperative training programs.

For some accounting educators, the challenges facing female accounting students and professionals centre about mixing with males in the workplace and are considered a cultural obstacle. That is, it still affects accounting teaching practices and shapes how society perceives females should within the accounting sector. One accounting educator expressed the issue as follows:

I see society wishes to provide a better environment for women, but it is possible that the girl will face rejection not from the workplace but from her family. Everyone is hoping for the state to provide jobs and settles this difference. there is still a misconception that if a woman does not follow the rules, then she is not good. (U4/12)

In terms of gender equity and equal opportunity at the universities, it remains the case that there are some positions which are only held by men, such as the position of Dean. Moreover, when invitations are extended to faculty members to attend meetings or events, they are sometimes limited to men only because of the job title. Princess Nourah University (PNU) is the only university in Saudi Arabia where all its positions are held by females. As revealed in the following accounting educators comment, these types of challenges may prevent female faculty members from professional development in the field of accounting practices:

The Auditing Court [a seminar focusing on the development of the government accounting system in Saudi Arabia] that was held last term. We attended 7 or 8 female professors from PNU, while King Saud University attended only one female Professor and the rest were male. Dr. Ghada attended as the college Dean, as she is the only female Dean in Saudi Arabia. (U5/0)

Theme SP/CM 4. Specific Committees

Another prominent theme to emerge from the accounting educators interview responses was the role of specific committees at the universities in coordinating and implementing changes to accounting education provision. This was mentioned 6 times by 6 accounting educators across 5 universities. The roles of committees related to curriculum development including quality assurance, and partnerships and professional relationships particularly emerged from the data analysis as having the most influence over change according to the educators.

SP/CM 4.1 Curriculum Development Committee

The Curriculum Development Committee is responsible for the development of the accounting curricula at the university and ensuring it is aligned with current changes and developments in the accounting profession. As revealed by one accounting educator, there are concerns at some universities about the lack of proactivity demonstrated by the Curriculum Development Committee to fulfil this role, suggesting that from 2014 at the university there has been no curriculum development (U2/1). Conversely, other accounting educators indicated that there are several functioning committees at their university trying to keep pace with everything related to the accounting sector:

We have several committees, including a methodology committee, a scientific research committee, a quality committee and a curriculum development committee, and these committees have meetings periodically. (U6/2)

There are two committees in the department, the Curriculum Committee and the Quality Committee. These two committees focus on the quality of curricula and for the Curriculum Committee there is a monthly report detailing the challenges facing the committee. (U7/0)

We have a Consultative Committee and a Scientific Committee, each with a male coordinator and female coordinator for each course. They work together so that all outputs and directions are the same. Yes, administratively and academically. (U1/0)

SP/CM 4.2 Partnerships and Professional Certificates Committee

The function of the Partnerships and Professional Certifications Committee is also to coordinate and strengthen links between accounting students and the professional sector. It works in the interests of the students and aims to help them to become better at accounting (U5/3) through the organisation of external courses and the provision of feedback to Professors regarding the selection and application of learning materials. As noted by one accounting educator:

The professors where encouraged to build relationships with external bodies due to cooperative education thats why the professors are doing their best to attract interested and high-quality authorities . The communication with these third parties was honest and very cooperative, they gave notes, work plans and materials they used for training. That cooperation help created an environment of mutual assistance between the university and the third parties through their notes and feedback. (U5/3)

SP/CM 4.3 Head of Department

It also emerged from the data analysis that some accounting educators believed that the authority to implement changes to the accounting education program at the university was dispersed among different roles. This was mentioned 5 times by 4 accounting educators from 3 universities.

On the one hand, the results show that some accounting educators believe the ultimate authority to make change to the curriculum is with the head of department. As one educator stated:

The head of the department has the authority to change something in the curriculum. (U1/2)

However, as another educator revealed, it may be the case that the department head needs to be convinced first of the need for any change or be forced to admit the problem exists (U1/3). In turn, in their interactions with the head of the department, some accounting educators indicated that they, in collaboration with the department head were given the opportunity think about what initiatives can be undertaken (U4/12) or that the head of the department is always ready to make improvements and welcome any suggestions (U7/3)

SP/CM 4.4 Accounting Students Club

Another mechanism for change identified by the accounting education was the Accounting Students Club. This was mentioned 3 times by 3 accounting educators across 3 universities. The Club aims to provide accounting students with opportunities to interact and to establish links with professionals and companies in the accounting sector, often through the organisation of a guest speaker to talk about part of the curriculum to students (U3/2).

As the following comment from one educator reveals, the Accounting Students Club is an official body at the university and can be relied upon to discuss important topics and implement change, and is especially favoured by female students:

When the Accounting Club was established, the female students loved this and became very enthusiastic, and after what we presented, it became official after a semester or semester and a half. (U4/6)

Furthermore, it was the view of one accounting educator that scheduling workshops and presenting guest speakers is easier and less complicated through the Accounting Student Club:

So the professors would get feedback and discuss it at the end of the semester and so they try to link internal and external factors and do courses with the help of the Accounting Club. (U5/3)

Theme SP/CM 5. Keeping up with Saudi Vision 2030

The final component of the change to process with the accounting education programs at universities identify the accounting educators was the need to reflect and support the Saudi Vision 2030. This was mentioned 3 times by 3 accounting educators from 2 universities.

Notablye, the educators pointed to the reality of the need for larger numbers of female accounting graduates to cover the goals set out in the Vision. As one educator expressed it:

The new trend is to create job opportunities for women. This is what we focus on with the female students, which is to make them more commanding and freer. And now the competition is great, as our female students get job opportunities maybe more than that obtained by male students, not because she is a woman, but because she has already proven herself. now it is equal, so now opportunities are available to everyone. (U4/6)

In addition, the analysis revealed that some educators believed there was a greater role for the professional sector to play in supporting female accountants to achieve the goals of the Vision 2030. As one educator questioned:

Are there job opportunities for women? Especially in line with the role of the profession and the Saudi Vision 2030. Yes, there are job opportunities available for women accountants. (U7/0)

In addition, the SOCPA representative suggested the performance of accounting departments in Saudi universities could be improved by the Accounting Commission undertaking a comparative study of the outputs of Saudi universities with the outputs of one of the distinguished international universities. As the participant explained, the Accounting Commission could then use the results to take an advisory role on how the accounting departments in Saudi universities can improve the performance of local outputs:

What we can do, for example, is to take the most effective accounting program in the world and then make a comparison with it. The commission then has an advisory role to say the accredited program requires this and that and so on (P/2)

The SOCPA representative also mentioned during interview that the Saudi Ministry of Education called for stronger links between the higher education sector and professional bodies to ensure graduates knowledge and skills (outputs) are aligned with the professional sector. As he explained:

The Minister of Education, the Minister of Commerce and the Evaluation and Education Commission want the professional bodies to inform us of the needs of the market in order for us to inform the universities so they can amend their curricula (P/2)

The interviewee went on to explain that the Minister of Education called for a list to be complied of universities whose graduates have passed the professional certificate, with the aim to build stronger links to the professional sector:

The Minister of Education has officially requested of us to identify who has passed the fellowship exam in all universities because he wants to do a study of the outcomes of universities. He said whenever the university has good education outcomes, the university is success. (P/2)

CATP 1.1 Poor Recourses

The point that the professor doesnt like is that we do not link practical cases to teaching, for example when the professor wants to explain documentation such statement of financial position for example she cannot bring real company's documentation to apply on them , we only have to stick to the exercises in the textbook and the curriculum and explain them only . There is no linking to the Saudi labor market (U1/2)

I was responsible for teaching the government accounting curriculum at Community College, but it has absolutely no relationship with Saudi Arabia (U2/3)

Also our university to this time has not adopted the new standards and they are still using the gap. Even in the presentation and presentation of the financial statements, we still use the old criteria. So I see that they have a problem with adopting the new standards (U2/5)

So the female students became confused, and when practical cases are requested from the female students, we find that they are completely different from what we study. Then the female students ask me about evaluation and marks and how they will be held accountable, so I tell them that I will hold them accountable for the curriculum, which is weak in the first place (U2/5)

"I'm teaching a textbook that is not applicable , since the textbook explains on cash basis , but we are now using the accrual basis so why I use a textbook is not about what is done now " (U1/1)

So the other subject in which the female students depend on slides that are given to them. So the female students are asking that you give them slides like the rest (U3/3)

the culture here means the textbook that the lecturer use in teaching. In the previous midterm exam, the lecturer was using an Egyptian textbook, the culture was predominantly Egyptian in terms of currency (pound) and cities (Alexandria- Cairo) and so on. Even the student in the exam , when the lecturer wrote Saudi riyals she eventually wrote pounds so the dominant character in that curriculum was the Egyptian character (U1/1)

"all the exercises that educators used are related to companies in US not in Saudi Arabia" (U1/1)

"We rely on foreign textbooks, so there is no actually dependence on Saudi culture because the majority is from foreign sources" (U2/4)

CATP 1.2 Cases Study

There is one academic member who mentioned about using cases study not from the curriculum and this means that the faculty members have flexibility to do that:

Therefore, I place the ten marks on the basis of practical cases, activities, or other things that are not from the curriculum, but I like referring to them. (U1/4)

Another accounting educator gave an evidence about that flexibility they have to use cases study for student assessment and to pick the topic that related to what they need:

CATP 1.3 Depends on Subject

Some educators mentioned that each one of accounting subject has a different teaching method. That depends on several factors. For example, auditing subject needs more practicals:

In fact, the teaching methods depend on each subject. For example, auditing needs practical applications and cases, and it also needs cooperation with professional accountants. (U2/4)

The teaching method I use depends on the nature of subject. (U3/3)

An academic staff who gave more explanation and details:

As for bachelors, some accounting courses have no way of explaining and Clarification them to students except in the traditional way such as principles and explanation of accounting and the method of making restrictions, so the method that works here is the traditional method.

But in a subject, such as the auditing subject, in the traditional part of it, some programs are used that are used for sampling, and also sometimes we bring an external auditor to show the students the reality of work of the external auditing and also the same thing with zakat and tax accounting.

In the end, every subject uses the mechanism that is compatible with its outputs, and this is found in most of our subjects, such as the analysis of financial reports, which students give the right to choose a number of companies and makes all the reports for these companies from entries and financial position lists, and then after that she makes a presentation. Not only the nature of subject could affect teaching methods but also assessment methods. This faculty member talked about this point in more details:

Where sometimes there is a course in which only one exam done, sometimes a course in which two exams done, and there is a course that is a case study, for example, the subject of Zakat and tax has 3 cases study, and I often give students a different case and a new idea that makes them search. One faculty member mentioned that teaching method is changed depends of the level of the subject. There is a different between junior and advanced courses:

In the beginning subject, the method of teaching differs from one subject to another, as if the material is from the first four levels that all departments participate in and we do not interfere in the details much. (U7/2)

"companies prefer if students have training courses in the use of office programs and some other accounting programs for related subjects" (U3/3)

we try to teach students how to build a simplified accounting system according to their capabilities, and we also try to make them learn and work on Excel. These things are applied through the lab (U6/2)

CATP 1.4 International Standards

Teaching methods changed because of the nature of standards that Saudi Arabia shifted to. The international standards are more applicable and this influence the teaching methods as well:

The Saudi market is now directed to international standards, which depend on judgment and appreciation, and international standards are completely different from the standards of the Saudi market that existed. CPA and SOCPA are not required for accounting academic staff. However, academics who have these professional certificates had changed their teaching style depends on what they have learned. This change impacts not only their teaching methods but also their teaching materials:

We teach SOCPA textbooks that translated into Arabic. The translation is good, but it contained some errors and we have modified it, so there is nothing wrong with that. Our university has a good relationship with SOCPA, as there are many university owners from SOCPA, Dr. Al Jaber and Dr. Al Maghamis, who wish anyone to ask him for anything to amend it. Another faculty member mentioned about the SOCPAs textbooks as the best one:

For educational subject, I feel that we teach the best subjects where we teach from SOCPAs textbooks, which is the newest one, as well as zakat and tax, as well as financial analysis, as the educational subjects I feel that they are good enough and I do not know about the rest of the courses. We are trying to do a professional job, or at least for the students to study what qualifies them to obtain the SOCPA upon graduation, and praise be to God, we can say that this has succeeded. Zakat accounting is a mixed subject between religion and accounting. Accounting students need to know how to calculate zakat in financial statements:

Accounting students also need to study the different between zakat and tax accounting system:

There is a subject that called Tax and Zakat accounting, where we teach both tax and Zakat system in Saudi Arabia. And when I talk about companies, then I have to differentiate between Saudis and non-Saudis companies. Saudis pay Zakat and non-Saudis pay taxes, so this is definitely linked to Saudi culture. Interest rate is not allowed in Islamic religion. Saudi Arabia as a Muslim country against the interest rate for the whole transactions in the country. Faculty members while they are teaching accounting and passing this point they usually mention that interest exists abroad. This is because the textbooks they use are translated or in English language:

Our university currently relies on English books as the newest, and as they are up-to-date and so on. But in most books that we have taught, we notice that they talk about the interest rate, etc. And these things are not available with us, as If the student asked me about these things; we tell her that they are applied in Countries that deal in usurious and other matters, as we consider that the thing that enhances this matter is not necessarily from the university itself, but rather from the academic community as a whole in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as they seek either to translate these books or reformulate them in a way that suits the Saudi identity and in a way that take into account our Islamic values and the alternatives that the state uses as monetary financial tools for this usurious transaction, such as bonds, so here we do not have bonds, but we have an Islamic accounting course that talks about all Islamic financial alternatives, as we believe that this course can be accompanied in other courses instead of being an existing course in itself, but rather it should be used as alternative things in other courses, as development comes from the academic community and not necessarily from every university alone, as the accounting academic community works to provide resources for the female student, so the religious, cultural and Islamic identity is strengthened so that female students do not feel weak, as if we go to another community, and we talk about our culture and we prove that Islamic accounting and Islamic alternatives are better than usurious methods, as when we study this matter, we are convinced of it. Because we have a problem hosting one of them on the female students' section. Because when entering a guest, it is necessary to prepare one month in advance and bring permits and papers. (U3/2)

Mixing between male and female in workplace is a serious topic in Saudi Arabia. Nowadays, some people think this is not a big issue any more, but some others not. A faculty member mentioned that academics could influence female students on this aspect:

Now there is no obstacle in terms of mixing, so if there is a conference, then we have to attend. This talk may not have been acceptable 5 years ago, but there was a strong jump and there was development. The culture today has allowed us that the female accounting student can participate in the labour market more comfortably than before, even when she is under training, she does not have these old obstacles. In my opinion that the professors also has a great influence on the female students. You find the female student while she talks and discusses comfortably. Every professor is according to his influence, so the students became broad in their perceptions. (U1/4)

In Saudi society teacher should give everything in the class to students including university level. It means students receive information from their teachers then study that information for exams:

Saudi society wants the school or university to teach the student everything, and this is definitely the fault of society. (U4/10)

There are some international standards that do not fit with the Saudi environment. A faculty member who mentioned about that and got an example from the topic of governance:

When I explain the topic of governance, I link it to governance in Saudi Arabia because there are standards that do not fit the Saudi environment, so the students have to know the standards that fit the environment here, and because I did my master's degree on standards and I made comparisons so I know what appropriate standards for Saudi Arabia are here and make the students search for Criteria and when they do not find the answer, I tell them in the lecture the correct answer. CATP 2.3 Flexible System

The assessment methods seem to be more flexible in some universities. An accounting faculty member mentioned that in her interview and she gave more details from her personal experience:

I changed some things, for example, marks were divided as follows: 20-20 both midterm 1& 2, 10 marks for practical cases, and sometimes I link them to the Saudi market. The participation of students in the lecture and their interaction during the explanation were 5 marks, assignments 5 marks, and final exam was 40 marks. Where I encourage female students to participate and on the basis of that I assign grades for them, I do not want to stay on that much. For example, last semester a student came to me and said that she suffers from stuttering while speaking, so she is shy and cannot participate. This is why I know that perhaps some of the students have a circumstance that prevents them from participating, such as shyness and for this I am firm with them a little in case, duties and so on. Not only assessment methods were flexible in some universities but also teaching materials and methods were capable to change from faculty members as well. An accounting educator mentioned how the flexibility of curriculum gives the academics the motivation to develop themselves and their curriculum:

I have been in this university for 10 years and when I started teaching I was benefiting from the experience of others colleagues and I used to take the curriculum and apply it only and it was boring. But when I developed my curriculum, the matter differed, and even that my personality differed, of course there is no problem in teaching certain elements, but it will be boring, but when the topic is not bound by boundaries, I will be enthusiastic to develop all the time. In the past, I had to adhere to a big curriculum because it ended at a specific time and it was inconvenient and even affected the quality of my output. And this is my point of view. (U4/10)

Another example of the flexibility of curriculum comes from an educator:

The accounting department encourage its faculty members to change and adapt new teaching

Each one of the faculty members has a percentage of flexibility of her teaching. A faculty member mentioned about this issue with an example for an accounting subject:

In the last meeting, it was stated that the member is supposed to have flexibility in the process at a certain rate. In the evaluation method for the subject of accounting in particular it must be taken into account that not every student is able to understand the teacher easy and directly, and we do not deny that this teacher is a professional or that he is familiar with the explanation, but there are some students who do not prefer the professor or do not accept him, as a female student who is close to her classmate can absorb the explanation of her classmate more, in addition to the fact that the student can sometimes be stressful, so there must be a comfort in the evaluation method. CATP 2.4 Vision 2030

Saudi younger generations think about their future career first. This is because the life became more complicated than before. They believe accounting could be one of the filed that match with the Saudi Vision 2030. One of the faculty members mentioned that in more details:

One of my students came to consult me in any field of specialization and I told her about politics or economics, then she asked me what economics or politics would work with the vision 2030. (U3/1)

Theme CATP 3 Students Evaluation

CATP 3.1 Exams

Methods of evaluation preferably diversification, as we have a quality unit that is keen on this matter and guides us on how to coordinate the subjects

But still the greatest reliance on tests

There are those who divide the FIRST MIDTERM and SECOND MIDTERM scores into 25 and 25 scores and the final exam of 40

Case study work is done in the class and we ask the students to form a circle with each other from five to six students in the group and this depends on the number of students in the class and then we distributed them to the case study in the class with the exclusion of all electronic devices and they can get the slides because the answer is not in it, but the answer lies in critical thinking and the method of analysis, how to analyze, and when the student sees the problem, as she has studied that the benefits of the board are in a specific form, there must be experience, etc. So the answer is not exactly present. As for grading in materials like accounting applications, it's a little bit different from the traditional way, And as mentioned earlier this material has no final exam, instead there's a test (Exam) for 30 marks and this test is not considered to be mid or final and it also doesn't have any theoretical sections due to it being a test for skills regrading a certain section or part without having multiple choice or true/ false questions, also the test features case studies where the student uses data that is provided to her in order to achieve the desired piece of information (U5/3)

Marks range from semester work with 50 or 60 marks, and the final exam 50 or 40 marks. Except for the computer course, and because it is practical, it has 4 practical exams, which are divided into approximately 25 marks for each exam, and exams are carried out in computer laboratories.

The same is for critical thinking in some subjects, where female students are given cases and evaluated on the basis of them. We have obtained international accreditation and we are now on the way to obtaining national accreditation, so we have experience in assessing goals. And we also see that one of the important things in the evaluation process is participation, participation is very important because the student must be active before we start explaining for example if we talk about tax accounting and we ask students about the meaning of tax since there must be interaction before Female students, just as we noticed that even if only one degree of participation was calculated from the assessment methods, this matter gives the students an incentive, also, we note that the level of understanding varies from one student to another, when a lecture is finished and professor come on the next day to give another one, he begins the lecture by returning to the previous lecture even if with a question in order to see the extent of the students' absorption because starting with the next lecture directly will be a problem for us, and from this a problem arose that causes the student to claim Bonus with additional degrees to participate and we even found the subject of Bonus degrees a funny topic because the number of grades in the course is 100 degrees, so how we can give these Bonus degrees, so will the degrees become equal to 101 or 102?!!

In the past, participation was calculated for it by the grades of the course, some members were allocating these degrees to attendance and some others were in the students participation with the professor and so we prefer participation in general, because it contributes to strengthening the students personality, if we talked about the accounting principles course, when we teach Accounting principles, for example, teach students how to implement the accounting entries, and then on the next day or within the same lecture if they are two hours long, where we allocate half an hour or a quarter of an hour to participate, as this participation is not necessarily between two students, as professor writes two entries and ask the two students to go up to the blackboard and solve this talk and make an accounting entry, so we noticed that some female students were shy, so we always tell them, especially female graduates, that they will move to the job market after this, then the student has to deal with clients if she worked in a bank or deals with employees if she worked for a company and so on, as there must be circulation It is likely that she will suddenly be asked to take a training course, so she must learn enough to develop her own capabilities, this is very important.

Therefore, we tell the students that the teaching itself was encouraged by a professor, as it gave us practical cases and application about it, and in the next lecture, professor asked the student to go up to the blackboard to correct the application so that professor is doing the solution and the students are reviewing to make sure that professor answer is correct, this matter encouraged us as professors, and now we meet the audience and talk to them, and all the credit goes to our teacher, because these things are very important, but unfortunately they are ignored, and of course we must say that the relationship between professor and the student is a relationship of respect , a female student respects professors rights and we respect her rights as there are lines that should not be crossed, so professors interested in the participation of the student because it is possible for all students to get A + or B +, but the self-ability is also important in the job market, and this is the point that must be focused on. CATP 4.1 Teaching Language

CATP 5.1 SOCPA

In fact, I as professor try as much as possible to relate it to the Saudi labor market, but this depends on the quality of the course, for example in costs, I could not link it sufficiently to Saudi culture, but the tax course that is based on the list of taxes for the Kingdom and the income tax regulation for the Kingdom and every semester I say for female students, there have been changes in the list due to the recent changes. We are trying to provide female students with the latest changes. For example, the last semester because the Saudi Organization for Certified Public Accountants did not update its portfolio quickly and we depend on it to deliver the latest updates and we were unable to explain the new. As for the current semester we got the authority update, and then I told the female students that they are lucky because they will study the new change. Female students are absorbers of what happen around them they are understood that the list is updated and that there is a body called the Zakat and Income Authority that applies the accounts that they study and this is what helps me as professor with the curriculum, and thus the female students merge and then the student comes to me to ask me and tell me honestly, Professor, that the Authority is implementing this, I tell her of course, they are very excited about this (U1/3)

The other point is also the difference in personal knowledge. For example, we have 3 or 4 female professors who studied SOCPA, so their method of setting the test, questions or discussion became different and stems from their studies, as an example of that, the administrative accounting subject, I as female professor must explain according to the questions of the book and also I obligated to specific exercises that I solve, then I discuss with the female students and ask them do you want questions from SOCPA and I match or emerge them with practical cases like the ones we study, and I find the response is that they agree, but when I raise this matter with the female coordinators and the other colleagues, I find great opposition and I find the response that we are an academic side, why do you mix it with the practical side?

Of course, this is due to the different cultures and that it is people who accept change and people who do not accept your judgment as they have been accustomed to a certain pattern of work for more than 15 years, and perhaps we all have this kind of aggression against change, so it is difficult to change a pattern that I used to for a long time. We teach SOCPA books translated into Arabic. The translation is good, but it contained some errors and we have modified it, so there is nothing wrong with that. The department is heading towards development in terms of the academic situation. The problem is that as people we want attention and development, so we want courses or conferences to increase our expertise and development, and even if they increased hours, I as a faculty member dont complain, because this is my choice. In fact, I am studying the fellowship, but I know that it will not add to me in my post but it will benefit female students. (U6/4)

As an example, I am doing an activity that I call information and accounting systems through which I link the curriculum to the industry and I create a chart flow, and make them see how the financial sector, the productive sector, or the retail sector looks, all by making a chart flow. As for the implementation of that idea, I was asking female students to do this at home, but now the curriculum has given me a lot of space at work so I bring papers with me and divide them into equal groups until everyone gets equal participation so that if there is a question or something, I discuss the whole group, unlike that the question is raised and I wait for an individual answer from the girls, as some female students are not interested, or that they are discussing with each other and make only one girl who is discussing with me, until I reached the idea of the group better in that they work harder (U1/4)

"I am responsible for cooperative training throughout the college. So I know what female students are missing in accounting, and this is through my communication with companies that explain to me what things are missing or what are their requirements. So I know what companies actually want, so when I give female students this subject, I try to get them to focus on parts that will benefit them in the future. They think that using technology and projector for example is a considered a development in education but it is not really like that, for example, when turning the lights off and reading from the slides on the blackboard this cause for relaxing, inactivity and sleep and not engagement and motivation. The lecturer doesnt use the projector in her explanation, she just writes the headlines using her hand and draws a mental map to attract the attention of the students. CATP 8.3 Classroom Capacity

The evaluation is only through group participations, and we try as much as possible to memorize the students' names because we have a problem of overcrowding and a large number, and the problem is not that the number of female students is large as much as the distribution in the divisions is unfair, as we have a problem that the college administration puts the names of the female professors before the term beginning and then the female students make a choice between professors. And imagine that in the services system there are Maximum 50 students, and we see that the department reaches above the Maximum, and why then do we put Maximum and the actual system allows more than 50. What happens at that time is that the female students are crowded into one of the divisions and become other female professors who do not have much to work on, even though the other female professor may be better and more competent, but the female students of course have another view of the subject and they make the selection on the basis of which facilitates the preparation and so on and it is not a condition that this is better than this one scientifically. But in other colleges at the university, the situation is different. For an example of this, in the College of Fundamentals of Religion, but the administration does not present the names of the female professors before the beginning of the semester and it becomes in balance. Also, we suffer from the problem of the number of female students; it was nearly reach 45 students. Teaching the advanced accounting course is very stressful, so we hope that the number of female students in the class will be about 20 or 25 students because the quality of the outputs, education and teaching all depend on the number. As professors cannot control forty-five students and of course they must be focused with them in order to work together, but unfortunately we cannot control the rate of admission because it is an order issued by the Deanship and we hope that we will all be able to teach in English without the presence of barriers or problems and in general we are thought these are our problems Currently (U5/0)

However, the higher engagement levels are in class the better the result is, and in order to increase student engagement professors use the points method or give examples from the local business market. How is the discussion method done?

I will talk about my discussion which was on the topic of Corona and its impact on the economy and on prices. So I made female students read and search and even the answers that did not contain any numbers and analysis I rejected. And I got good, great answers. So is a discussion like a room to chat and everyone can put their opinion into the discussion? Yes, its. Where I download a question and it is answered by the female students, and it is not a requirement that everyone be active to answer the question. The system is very nice as it lets you evaluate. The system provides a score of evaluation on the discussion, which I as a female professor put, for example, let it be 5, so when the student replies, it evaluates it automatically. The outputs of the accounting department in English are very weak because the students did not understand accounting well:

CATP 1. 3. Poor Educational Planning

Theme CATP 2. SOCPAs Initiatives

CATP 2. 1. Books Translation

SOCPA has taken the initiative to translate the newest accounting textbooks to ensure that accounting outputs keep pace with accounting developments in Saudi Arabia and the world:

When we searched for updated Arabic textbooks, we found that the book did not suit or fit international standards and most of them were old Therefore, SOCPA adopted the translation of major books in financial accounting and intermediate accounting 2 - When the issue of translating books was raised, an unnatural attack occurred from the academy, and they said this is not your specialty, and we will not teach these books in universities and we will translate books. - But SOCPA did not allow this, and to this day, no book has been translated or written by academics related to Saudi standards because if we had waited for them, we would not have reached here now. - Therefore, the SOCPA took care of the translation and its expenses and did not ask anything from the universities, and it cost us very large sums, reaching 200 thousand for a book, but the translation was done anyway. It is assumed that upon completion or end of the translation, these books will be sent to the department heads, and the response was supposed to come with thank to the accountants authority, but what happened was the opposite. They refused the books and said we will translate and do not impose your books on us, but those books were Canadian and they are taught in the best universities and we only translate it with what it contains - So we approached them through the Minister of Education, and the Minister of Commerce sent a letter to the Minister of Education in which he said that the Commission has translated these books and we ask universities to receive them and benefit from them - I was at the time head of the department and the letter reached me by looking at these books and teaching them, so we approved all the books and approved them all by Umm Al-Qura University, but we find on this day some universities did not adopt them I repeat that the goal of the accounting profession must be above all disputes (P/1)

The other thing that I would like to refer to is the curriculum. There is no new curriculum. The Commission has translated 8 books on accounting standards, principles, intermediate 2, auditing standards and cost accounting as well, and the Commission always develops books and adds everything that emerges from the standards.

- These books have been prepared by people who teach these books in Canada, and these books such as American, Australian and Canadian are well prepared and are reviewed and supervised by authors and directors unlike the books we have here.

Therefore, we were keen to develop and encourage translation work

How is the encouragement done?

- We encourage the translation of books and not authoring them because these books were written by former people and have been studied many times so they have been modified when any error appears

- Translation is the basis of knowledge, and whoever translates can authoring. For example, the Islamic renaissance began with translation. So we have to encourage young people to translate so that they can authoring later, because writing is an industry, an art, and a talent, and not every doctor can write.

- Every doctor must know how to author, how to write the chapter, how to write the information, and how to write the question that measures the information

- And also to learn how to set goals that must be reached after learning a chapter and these things we miss in our textbooks and I did not see them in Saudi writing. Maybe you just saw it in elementary or middle books

- When we tried to encourage translation in order to shift or change to international standards because the market needs people who understand international accounting standards, and this is what we call the adapting of the profession market with education

- So we told the universities, don't teach with people who only know the old Saudi standards, but teach them the new standards, and these books are exist and ready, as some accepted it and others did not accept it because they wanted to teach from their own books or their notebook that they sell in bookstores.

- So we sought the help of the Minister of Education, but the Minister did not oblige universities to do so, so he said, "Benefit from the books."

So I expect that the groups whose students studied the new books will have better students than those who did not study the new books and this is because the students have a background of the new updates. (P/2)

CATP 2. .2 Educational SupportSOCPA has proposed scholarships that include training and test fees for the good students from each university:

CATP 3.1. Vision 2030

The accounting profession in Saudi Arabia has become affected by Vision 2030. The vision aims to build a good accountant who meets the needs of the profession:

To achieve Vision 2030, we need to build good professional accountanst, and students have been highly qualified. This is supposed to be everyones goal. We hope that the accounting profession will compete with all professions because until now some people consider accounting as Cashier So we created the idea of the forum in order to introduce people to the accounting profession and its role. Vision 2030 focuses on the accounting profession to achieve the economic development of the country through the integrity of the financial statements prepared by these accountants:

If we mention accounting in the vision 2030, then it is an economic goal and the economy will not develop unless there are highly reliable financial statements and there is transparency in them in order to enable economists to rely on these statements and take appropriate decisions.

CATP 3.2. Private Universities

Private universities are quick to keep pace with the changes in the science and profession of accounting:

If we look at the differences between public universities and private universities, we will find that private universities quickly adapt to changes, perhaps due to the bureaucracy or the capacity available to them. (P/1)

The speed of response of private universities to change in the science and profession of accounting compared to public universities:

As an example of a private university, when any new standard is applied, they directly bring in an expert to teach students and faculty members about this standard, and this of course is directly reflected in the curriculum.

- On the other hand, in public universities, the standard will be published in 2019, which will be taught in 2021 or perhaps 2022

- The government work is slow and also less accountability. - So there are some problems in terms of powers and accountability, so this depends on the diligence of the faculty member because sometimes we find a diligent member and another member that is not like this, and this in turn reflects on the student.

Female accounting students are making more progress than males:

In fact, I have a bias here on women because I think they have many characteristics that differ from men - I taught male and female students and I taught them the same subject, and almost everyone was at the same level and I used to teach them in the masters degree. I had two divisions, and most of these students were over the age of 27, and they were also employed and qualified, and they did not differ in features much, but the difference in the level was very large, as all the female students that I had had graduated with distinction, and I had an average of approximately 95 degrees. As for the male students, only 3 were obtained distinction from them. Perhaps the difference is very clear in terms of commitment and ambition - I noticed when I asked male students why they are studying this course, but I did not find a clear answer - As for the female students, they had goals and some of them linked this goal to fellowship and even at the level of work, we find women are more accurate and committed than men. As when I need a female colleague, I always find them in their office. As for men, I often do not find them, so I see that women are more accurate, love and passionate about work, and I do not know what is the reason behind this, but I feel that women love work more than men and sacred it (P/1)

There are many challenges facing the female accountant in the professional sector. This makes the demand for female accountants may differ from that of male accountants in the professional sector. - And this happened when we did a training course for women; some of them came and said, why not, I do not attend that session with this doctor?

As for work, sometimes the employer thinks that employing women will limit achievements and perform tasks as required

- And for example the accounting office's when they are asked why they do not employ female accountants, they say we employ them, but sometimes they have to meet clients, some of them refuse and some of them do not. And when the interview takes place, the place is not suitable for her, as all the bathrooms are for men or the whole section is men. Then she come and feels alone between them

- This is also one of the reasons, and I say it is due to culture

- Also, I think that the employer thinks that the woman may be more expensive or cost, especially if the woman is married, she may become pregnant and stop working for two months, for example, so the business owner might think about choosing a man and not a woman. (P/1)

Tutorial Is part of Future teaching practices it`s noticed that allocating 3 hours during the term is not sufficient, it`s noticed that some of the courses have become 4 hours at the present time, as it is better to have an hour devoted to applied cases where it should not include any theoretical content but rather be devoted to the practical section only, for example If a model in the advanced subject is taken, so in terms of teaching methods, the method in this subject is good, but the main problems lie with regard to the practical process, because I do not have time for practical application, then there must be an additional hour, and in this additional hour it is not supposed to be given by the same professor, but another professor who is a lecturer to provide the education tutorial for the course. Exactly, as the King Saud University and the Imam suffer from gender problem even more.
