WordPress Tasks for Week 03

Make sure you are working on jupiter for example https://jupiter.csit.rmit.edu.au/~s31234/wordpress/wp-adminSearch for the plugin called WP Force SSL. Install and Activate it. We need an SSL certificate, but our page is now https

Perform all Updates of your plugins and themes, when a new version comes. Do this every week. Not doing updates exposes your site (and our server) to potential security risks.

REVIEW: Make sure you have fully completed all parts of last week's worksheet, in particular:

Go to Settings | Reading and make sure you hide this site from Google and other search engines. You would not do this in a real live Website of course. Why is it important to do this here?

_______________________________________________

Make sure you have activated the OnePress theme. It can be found under Themes| Add New

Make sure any headings marked as <h2> in the text are actually formatted with the Heading 2 style etc

Activate Akismet, which is already installed by default. This plugin is essential to block spam. You'll need to sign up for an API key from WordPress.com. This is free of charge if you move the slider on the site.

Upload the image of Disassembling_a_bicycle_chain_with_a_chain_tool.jpg (from the .zip file on Canvas) to the Media Library. Add a Custom version (600px x 450px) of this image in the Post called Mending a Bike Chain at the position shown on page 4 below . Centre it as on page 4.

Add a Caption to this image in the Media Library as shown on page 3 below. Change the Alt Text and Image Title properties also. These are important for accessibility purposes. You can use similar wording for each. This can be done in the Media Library. These are also important for SEO purposes. What is SEO?

______________________________________________________________________________________________

-2781303429000Add the "More" tag immediately after the first paragraph in the Mending a Bike Chain Post and immediately after the first paragraph in the Bike Safety and Other Road Users Post. Check the post to see how it looks. In some themes these are added automatically. This may not work in some themes, including One Press.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Find an example of a masonry style of theme, such as used on Pinterest. ________________ What do they look like?

Go to Appearance | Widgets area and a Calendar widget at the very bottom of the sidebar.

Add, remove and move widgets until your sidebar looks like https://jupiter.csit.rmit.edu.au/~e90780/wordpress. You should have widgets for Search, Categories, Recent Posts and Calendar only and in that order.

Trash the default Sample Page. Add a New Page called Our Staff and add the text for this page from the Word file.

Try adding Medium size versions of the images of the staff members Kate Smith and Sandra Pereira at the very beginning of the relevant paragraph, as per the Word file. Add the Captions, Alt Text etc. Edit your post so that the image floats to the right, as per https://jupiter.csit.rmit.edu.au/~e90780/wordpressChange from the default template to the Full Width template (Not all themes have this.) for the Our Staff page (only). No sidebar or widgets should now be visible. Does the text occupy 100% of the width of the page or not? _____

Ensure that comments cannot be made on the Our Staff page. Click on Edit. You may first need to uncheck Discussion. Next you need to uncheck the Discussion setting Allow comments down at the bottom of the page. Do this for all future Pages also (but not for Posts).

Check that all links open up in a new tab. Why is this important? _________________________________________

Although WordPress "crunches" all images added to the Media Library and produces three copies of different sizes, Web professionals often use Photoshop or other tools to pre-process images. You still need to choose which image size you want to add.

Select the images provided for Mending a Bike Chain (all landscape) and the images for Bike Safety and Other Road Users (all landscape).

Process the images on your photo editing software or Website (before you upload them to the Media Library), for example as follows:

Landscape images should probably be around 800 x 600 pixels for our Website.

Portrait images should probably be around 600 x 800 pixels.

All images probably should be less than 200 kB so that they load fast. Adjust the quality if required.

The brightness of some images may need to be adjusted.

Add an image gallery (all landscape pics) immediately after the first paragraph and the More tag (that does not work) in both the Mending a Bike Chain and Bike Safety and Other Road Users posts. Here we will use Photo Gallery by Supsystic, which is free and produces professional results quickly.

The images which you have first re-sized and/or Photoshopped should then be added to the Media Library. Add Alt text and a Description for each image (They can be the same), but probably not a Caption.

Fixed layout works fine, but you can experiment. One client requirement is that the images be in two columns. Therefore let's try 360 x 270 (for landscape). Probably increase the Images distance to 20 and Image radius to 10 pixels.

2242301766719Alternatively you can try other gallery plugins such as Foo Gallery, NextGen Gallery etc. However the gallery must look professional, as per the sample Website.

2242309637Once you have installed and activated Photo Gallery by Supsystic click on New gallery and type in a Gallery Name such as 'Bike Chain' and click on Save.

Note the Shortcode which needs to be pasted into your Post (or Page) at the appropriate spot.

First click on Add Images of course though. Probably choose Import from WordPress Media Library

The following step is essential and will be explained to you by your teacher in class. If your text and any images are not separated by at least one blank line, you cannot simply press Enter or add a <br> tag. Add &nbsp; in Text mode. For example press Enter immediately after the words ". will loosen the link. " and then type &nbsp;

Add a YouTube video to the Post called Bike Safety and Other Road Users immediately before the words ".Do not retaliate or provoke a confrontation. You can find a suitable YouTube video of your choice. There are a few methods. Pasting the URL straight into the page in Visual mode works, but the video is left aligned.

METHOD 1: Paste the embed code into the page, again in Text view. The embed code is from right clicking on the video. The code in blue has been added or altered.

<p style="text-align: center;"> <iframe width="465" height="260" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dkoVxBnnGko" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> </p>

METHOD 2: Install a plugin such as DW FitVids, useful if your video is not responsive eg. to a phone

Two similar methods can be used to add Google Maps also. Plugins are not really required in most cases however

Add a PDF document (Cycling Maintenance.pdf) into your Mending a Bike Chain Post immediately before the hyperlink at the bottom. Click on Add Media etc. The pdf file is on Canvas.

This may take a while. Create a new an attractive header image perhaps around 300 x 100 pixels. It should probably consist of a suitable logo (or a photo) plus the words "Bike Shop" in a fancy font.

You can find free images that do not require attribution from https://pixabay.com There are hundreds of images of bikes there, which might be suitable for your header.

You can use Photoshop, or any other software. The editor at https://pixlr.com is excellent.

You may prefer to create a logo using a logo-creation Website, or any other method. Try https://www.canva.com which is used by WordPress professionals and is very simple. If you upload your own image, this is free.

Add the Bike Shop header image to the theme. Simply go to Appearance | Customize in the Dashboard. Also remove the Site Title and Tagline either under Customize or by going to Settings.

You should now have a total of 2 Posts and 1 Page. Please check https://jupiter.csit.rmit.edu.au/~e90780/wordpressThis may take a while. Create at least one of the plugins (Thanks for Reading, a modified version of Catify or the Contact Form) from the Websites given on the worksheet on Canvas, and demonstrate it. For bonus marks try to customise your plugin.

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This product assessment task is the first of two assessment tasks students need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit. You will need to use the marking rubric below to make sure you have completed all tasks and answered all questions for this assignment.

For this assessment task you will be required to create a fully customised Website for a small business in consultation with a client, in this case your teacher. You will learn some of the key features of WordPress and how a simple site can be planned, configured, developed and tested.

Assessment Instructions

Part A- Practical Task

For this assessment task you will be required to create a fully customised Website for a small business in consultation with a client, in this case your teacher. The website will be created using a Hosting platform where you will have access to in and out of the classroom. You will work individually on this project.

Initially you will follow a simple case study each week in class based on set tasks, but you will also develop some extra customisations, such as a custom theme with CSS styling and even a small online store. You will also have the opportunity to develop features of your own choice.

Part B Knowledge

Once your Website has been completed and validated you will be required to answer the questions and complete the documentation to explain configuration, customising and validating which will need to be submitted for assessment purposes.

WhereStudents will be provided class time to work on this assessment, however, it is expected that the majority of this assessment will be completed outside of class. The practical observation will take place during class time.

How

Students will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the marking guide in Section B of this task and how well they answer the questions asked by the assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result student will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.

There are 2 parts to this assessment task, you will be required to complete:

Part A: Create a fully customised Website for a small business and use the checklist to confirm tasks completed

Part B: You will answer questions relating to installing, creating, and troubleshooting the Website

Part A: Website Creation

The basic scenario for this project will be as follows:

A small business based on a particular case study will specialise in certain products and services that they will sell to the public. The products and services that the business deals with will be discussed in the tutorials each week.

You will be expected to implement several basic requirements into your site, as specified below.

You will essentially create a Website showcasing a typical small business. Media such as image galleries, sliders and videos will be included throughout. A contact form will be required as well.

The basic requirements will include the following pages: Home, Contact Us, Products/Services (with several sub-menu items), Links, Our Staff and a blog page.

After creating the initial required pages and menu, you will need to employ a variety of plugins in order to create image galleries and sliders, a contact form and a simple shopping cart, as well as implement SEO on at least two of the posts or pages. Required plugins will include WooCommerce and Yoast SEO.

As you are developing your Website, you will be asked to demonstrate your site in class. You will of course receive feedback regarding the appearance and functionality of your site, particularly in relation to the client requirements.

Towards the end of the project you will be asked to develop further customisations of your own choice. These will include selecting an attractive and responsive theme and customising your theme's appearance, including the header and logo. CSS customisations will also be required. Special plugins will also be required.

Use the checklist below to make sure you have completed all the required tasks:

You will need to demonstrate the tasks with the teacher and sign off below (at the bottom)
