Year 10.5.3 English Assessment Task 1

Term 1: Power and Corruption Animal Farm & Fahrenheit 451

Due Date: FRIDAY 31ST MARCH, 2023 (WEEK 9)

Weighting: 25%

Outcomes Assessed:

EN5-1A - responds to and composes increasingly sophisticated and sustained texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure

EN5-5C - thinks imaginatively, creatively, interpretively and critically about information and increasingly complex ideas and arguments to respond to and compose texts in a range of contexts

EN5-7D - understands and evaluates the diverse ways texts can represent personal and public worlds

Context:

In this module, students have been investigating the ways power and corruption are represented in and through texts. By focusing on two texts the novella, Animal Farm by George Orwell and the film Fahrenheit 451 directed by Ramin Bahrani, students are able to compare and contrast their understanding of what power is and how it can be corrupted by those in power.

Task Description:

You are to create a multimodal presentation to help students in Year 10 answer the following question:

Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Explain how this is demonstrated within George Orwells Animal Farm and Ramin Bahranis Fahrenheit 451. Provide your opinion on the consequences of corruption within society today, and/or the ethical/unethical nature of key events in both texts.

You should create your multimodal presentation using a digital presentation program such as PowerPoint, Keynote, iMovie or Prezi that guides your audience through your understanding of the question, the ways power and corruption are represented in both texts and how this is conveyed.

You should compare how the ideas or themes are covered and if they are similar or different and in what ways this is shown to the reader or viewer. Consider the use of Venn diagrams to offer such comparisons.

Your presentation must include at least 1 annotated passage from the novel and at least 1 annotated screen shot/still frame from the film. Your thoughtful evaluation should be authentic and reveal a deep understanding of the content.

Your speech must be between 5 6 minutes long.

Presentations shorter than 4 minutes will attract a penalty.

No part of the presentation will count after the 7minute mark.

You will be assessed on how well you:

Communicate verbally, speaking fluently and clearly

Convey the meaning represented in the TWO examples in a sophisticated way through the emphasis of particular lines, phrases, words or other visual elements

Reflect on delivery choices made to enhance meaning of the spoken aspects of the presentation, demonstrating control over language

Consider the visual aspects of the presentation to allow the audience to engage with the video in an effective way

Address the question that has been asked by giving an opinion and detailed explanation of your own answer throughout the presentation

Provide a thoughtful evaluation that reflects a sophisticated and authentic understanding of the content.

Submission Instructions:

Presentations are to be pre-recorded using a recording software you are familiar with e.g. Screencastify, PowerPoint, OBS etc. You must submit the recording, as an Unlisted YouTube link, to your classes Teams Assignment Submission page before 8:50am on the due date.

Note: It is the responsibility of the student to ensure their assessment is correctly submitted. It is not advisable to leave submission till the last minute. Technical issues, including not being able to save your recording or the recording not playing correctly, will not be considered reason for late submission, and marks will be deducted.

This Medical Certificate must be provided on the day of returning to school attached to an Illness, Misadventure and Special Circumstances (IMASC) Application.
