background study explaining the topic area and why you are selecting it to do a literature review,
together with references and a timeline.
Outline
Title page - Include the research topic, students name, student number and supervisors
name - not word counted.
1. Background and Rationale - Provides a background to the topic and establishes its
significance. Identification of the research gap; that is why you conduct such research and
what your research values. The literature known by this stage would be expanded and
detailed later at the literature review stage (assessment 2). Must include sufficient in-text
citations for all necessary facts and arguments.
2. Research Problem - Describe the broader research problem
3. Research Question(s) - refers to the specific questions that a research project aims to
answer. These questions guide the focus and direction of the research and help to define
the scope and objectives of the study.
4. Aim - Be realistic about what you can accomplish during the project. The aim is what you
want to achieve.
5. Objectives - describe how you are going to achieve the aim. It is possible that your aim and
objectives will change as the research develops.
6. Scope and limitations - Briefly explain the study's boundaries and limits. Your supervisor
can then ascertain whether the area of study is appropriate in scope and feasible.
7. Work Plan/Timeline - Make a work plan for this semester's work, including completing the
literature review and research design proposal. Better to include a simple Gantt chart. Not
