Assignment overview

This assignment is a mandatory submission, which means that in order to pass this subject of study, you must submit this assignment.

Now that you have learned much about the topic:

Does a person's intelligence predict their knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards cyber security?

By participating in research, it's now time for you to prepare your research report using yourAssignment 1: Literature reviewas your introduction.

This assignment supportsSubject Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

If your studies have been adversely affected by circumstances beyond your control, you may request an extension using the following options.

Note: A request must be made within 48 hours of the assignment due date.

Work your way through the following information and steps in order to meet the requirements of this assignment:

What should I include?

Download and readAssignment 2 Research report template (DOCX 14 KB).Download Assignment 2 Research report template (DOCX 14 KB).You will see that the analysis has been completed for you. Read it again and again until you understand it. You will need to be able to comprehend the results of the study in order to write the discussion section of the article.

You will need to include/add to this template the following sections:

Abstract (250 new words).

Introduction (800 words, assuming roughly 250 new words).

Discussion (1000 words).

References (words as needed).

Note:the reference list is not included in the word count.

You will note that the word counts are varied. Your OLA will be counting words in the abstract (250 words) and in the discussion (1000 words). Your OLA will assume that you will use roughly 250 new words in your introduction based on feedback, however that will wildly vary between individual students based on their introduction feedback and new words wont be countedonly the quality of the introduction section that is presented.

How should I action feedback forAssignment 1: Literature review?

If you havent done so already, you will need to go back to the feedback you received forAssignment 1: Literature reviewand based on this feedback, action the changes and amend your work. The quality of your introduction section is in the rubric for this assignment, therefore failing to fix up the problems in your first version of the introduction (or learn from your mistakes) will reduce your overall mark for this assignment.

Your OLA will provide you with detailed notes about where you have missed points and made mistakes. Before you write any of your discussion, you should go over those notes carefully so that you dont replicate your mistakes in the discussion section.

What should I write about?

Abstract

The abstract is a short (250 words) summary of your findings. It should include: what you did, why you did it, how you did it, what you found, and what it all means. It is recommended that you look at the abstracts of some of the articles you have reviewed for this research report to see how they have done it. Usually, you would write this section last to summarise all of the things already in the paper.

Introduction

Hopefully you are well versed in how to write an introduction section now. However, if you need a refresher, head back toAssignment 1: Literature reviewas it details everything you need to know about writing the introduction section.

Discussion

The discussion section is where you make conclusions based on your research and where you detail any problems, flaw, highlights and benefits to what you did. You also get the opportunity to look forward to where you can go with the research next. It can be broken down into four sections:

Review: Reviewwhat you were testing and what your hypothesis was.

Address your hypothesis:State clearly whether your hypothesis was supported or not, and what the evidence was that supported or did not support your hypothesis.

Limitations:There is no such thing as the perfect study and this one is no exception. Think through what some limitations were of the study, however be cautious not to overstate the limitations. Think them through thoroughly before stating them. For example, if you said 'maybe people didnt understand the survey questions and randomly answered', then think through what your results would be. If that were true, there would be random answers and no correlation/finding. If there wasnt a correlation/finding, then that might be the case. However if there is a correlation/finding, then thats evidence that your limitation is false.

Closing:Close by relating what these findings mean in the real world outside of the research lab, and then talk about what the next study would be to further explore this topic and detail what you could do and why. Finally, close out by providing a brief paragraph rehashing what you did, what you found and what it means.

General writing guidance

As with any assignment, your writing style should shine through. When writing keep the following points in mind:

Write in plain English. Avoid jargon wherever possible.

While your paragraph style is up to you, your OLA should always be able to find your topic point, supporting evidence, and a conclusion within each and every one of your paragraphs. If in doubt, write the standard paragraph (topic sentence, 35 sentences of supporting evidence, conclusion sentence).

Follow the standard essay format as best as possibleopening paragraph, evidence based paragraphs, concluding paragraph.

Start with a writing 'hook'an introductory paragraph that tells the reader why they should care about this question in the first place.

Use concrete examples whenever possible, especially when discussing complex, abstract, ideas.

Write succinctlydo not be repetitive.

Provide evidence for all of your arguments.

Refer to the marking rubric for this assignment to determine how your work will be assessed.

Remember to use both in-text citations and a reference list on a separate page. The strongest writing seldom puts the names of the authors in the text itself. So instead of 'Einstein (1917) showed that time is relative', instead say 'We know that time is relative (Einstein, 1917)'.

It is okay to foreshadow your hypothesis in this assignment. Your hypothesis should not be surprising to the reader by the time they get to it.

Prior to submitting your assignment please refer to theAcademic integrity checklistto ensure the integrity of your submission.

In addition to your OLAs who provide discipline-specific content advice, you can access the independent free draft review service which will provide you with a personalised critique of the written assignment you submit to them. Their feedback can be used to help you better understand good writing techniques but should not be interpreted as an indication of the grade you will receive. Queries about the content you present in a written assignment should always be directed to your OLA.

General researching guidance

As seen in the rubric, you should be providing evidence in the form of peer-reviewed scientific journal articles. If you need help in finding relevant articles, it is suggested that you begin with the librarys tutorial onSuccessful searching. There is also a tutorial on how to submit to Turn-It-In located in the online tutorials.

You will find that there are many articles about both fluid intelligence and human aspects of information security. Some suggestions are provided to help you narrow down your search, but ultimately, what you use is up to you. You should be providing as much recent research (i.e. in the last seven years) as possible. However in many cases, you can and should also include older pieces of research.

A great recommendation, would be to begin with the articles provided to you as outlined and look at the most relevant pieces of literature that the authors have chosen to cite in their articles. These articles they cite are often some of the most important pieces of work in the field. You can also find those articles onGoogle Scholar. Once you have found it on Google Scholar, there will be a link under the article called 'Cited by'. This link will show you all of the journal articles that have cited that specific article. Each of them should, in some way, be related to the topic and will be newer than the article itself.

Assignment 2 marking guide

Criteria Description of criteria Poor (0 points) Satisfactory (half points) Good (full points)

General writing skills(40%)

Word count It is important to practise saying what you need to say within a given word count. (Note:Word count doesnotinclude the title or the reference list.) More than 10%outside of the word count. Within 10% of the word count. Within 5% of the word count.

Readability The ability to write clearly is a core skill that you need to develop throughout your university study. Poor grammar or spelling - difficult to read. Satisfactory grammar and spelling with afew errors. Excellent grammar and no spelling mistakes.

Structure and flow Ideas to help structure your work include:

Make sure you group together related points/themes, rather than constantly jumping between your different themes.

Make sure your paragraphs are not too short or too long.

Minimise using lots of very short sentences in a rowtry to join very short sentences together to create a more conversational flow.

Once youve finished, take a break (ideally of a day or more) then come back and read through your work in one go. Is it easy/smooth to read? Poorly structureddoes not flow well. Generally structured well and flows as an essay, but with some small breaks in flow. Excellent structure and flow of thoughtand argumentthroughout the essay. Sentences are neither too long nor too short.

Conciseness An important skill in academic writing is being able to get lots of information in a small space, while ensuring your work still flows nicely, rather than sounding like it is written in point form. This really is one of the key elements that separates high distinction assignments from lower gradeassignments. Lower grade assignments tend to use lots ofwords to say something that could be said in less space, and generally seem to have more waffle and less solid content. Could write much more concisely andinclude much more actual intellectualcontent (citations, arguments, etc.) Satisfactory, but could write a bit more concisely and include more actualintellectual content. Writes concisely and includes a highamount of intellectual content.

Referencing and references(20%)

Number of primary sources These are references to primary, peer-reviewed references. These may include the ones that have been suggested to you in other subject locations, but should include some outside of those recommended as well. This list does not include the ones provided in the methods and results. Less than threereferences. Three to five makingunique contributionsto the study, or morethat may not be themost relevant. Six or more that makeunique contributionsto the case study andare appropriatepapers.

Referencing Your APA referencing skills should be good at this level. Please check a writing in psychology text or consult theAPA Manual itself if you need to (it is available online through the Western Library website). Missing reference list, citations and reference list do not match, or major breaks fromAPA formatting. Referencing generallywell done, withcomplete match between citations andthe reference list. Maycontain a few small formatting errors. Perfect APAreferencing.

Use of references The key difference here is between merely including a bunch of references you looked up out of the reference list of some paper, versus clear display of having actually read and critically assessed each paper. Try to pick papers that strongly contribute to our understanding of the debate/ topic of the question (review and meta- analysis papers, critical high quality experiments, etc.) rather than just listing the first few papers you come across. Use of references only loosely related totopics and arguments,and/or displays little evidence of actuallyreading the referencesand assessing their relevance. No criticalexamination of source quality. Satisfactory use ofreferences, with someevidence of in-depth reading and assessment of the sources contributionto the argument. Strong evidence of in depth reading andcritical assessment ofreferences. Use of significant sources (critical experiments,review/meta-analysis papers, etc.) to bolsterarguments.

Evidence and format(20%)

Critical evaluation of evidence This is first and foremost, a science paper. The aim is tocritically evaluate the scientific evidence provided. It is important that you provide the evidence for your interpretation of the data. Little/no criticalevaluation of evidence. Mentions relevant points, but does notadequatelydemonstrate how they apply. Presents and criticallyexamines the relevant points with evidenceof full understanding, and presents evidence for alternativemethods.

Scientific quality of argument It is important that you use logical deductive argument and/or the empirical evidence from the papers youve sourced to support any particular arguments you make. Summarises and describes rather thanpresenting supportedarguments. Presentedviewpoints may not reflect the body ofevidence discussed. Satisfactoryarguments, though could be more accurate or at agreater depth.Presented viewpoints may not reflect thebody of evidence. Accurate and in-depth arguments. Lets the weight of evidencedemonstrate asupported viewpoint, and describes, based on the evidence, how the case may have been done better.
