left1038225Question 1 Example: I chose the aspect of defence mechanisms with a focus on projection as an example or sub-topic (Smith 2016). Projection can be defined as assigning emotions to others according to Cooper (2021). I chose it because I realised that I am prone to projecting my own emotions on others when I am unwilling to accept responsibility for my feelings. After learning about it I understand that it has caused so much conflict in my life because others see it differently than I do.

-381005581650Question 2 Example: Wilbur (cited in Smith 2016) conducted a study on projection to explore the reasons why university students had conflict with someone. The researchers used a personality questionnaire and compared results before and after an argument. The results indicated that students who were in denial about their own negative personality traits, were more prone to ascribe it to the other person. This finding relates to defence mechanisms as aspect (Smith 2016) as it demonstrates that people use defence mechanisms to manage emotions that they view as unacceptable, and it demonstrates projection in the context of conflict (Wilbur, cited in Smith 2016). -381004943475Question 4 Example: The previous US President, Donald Trump, accused the Australian Prime Minister of being deceitful and untrustworthy (Cooper 2009). This demonstrates how projection, as an example of defence mechanisms (Smith 2016) can explain why a public figure would openly accuse another world leader of transgressions that he has committed himself. As Smith (2016) argued, projection allows a person to refer to traits that they find threatening in themselves on a subconscious level without having to address it. In this example, it is possible that Trump is truly unaware of how fitting those descriptions are of himself and as such, it meets the requirements for projection that states the person using it must be in complete denial (Jones, cited in Smith 2016).
