PURPOSE
The purpose of this assessment task is to:
Assess your knowledge and understanding of the topics on quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques in research.
Measure your ability in synthesising and applying knowledge to critically appraise data collection techniques and types of data analysis in real-world research context.
The unit learning outcomes assessed are:
LO 1:Articulate a critical and integrated knowledge of the applicability and limitations between major quantitative and qualitative methods in data collection, and between primary and secondary data;
LO 4:Appraise and critique alternative data analysis techniques to identify methods appropriate for the purpose and condition of an analysis; and,
ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE
In this assignment, you will undertake critical analysis of the difference between a quantitative data collection technique and a qualitative data collection technique used in two separate business research studies recently published (last four years) in quality journals recognised by the ABDC (Australian Business Deans Council). The ABDC list is inABDC Journal List (2019 v12)1.xlsxopens in new windowThis assignment requires you to undertake a holistic assessment of a qualitative research approach in a study versus a quantitative research approach in another study. You must select a research article that strictly used a quantitative data collection technique and another that strictly used a qualitative data collection technique. You should not select study that used a mixed method approach. Substantial loss of marks will occur for assignment that selects mixed method study and focuses on the qualitative approach whilst ignoring the quantitative approach (or vice versa). In addition, it is also not appropriate to use both the qualitative approach and the quantitative approach in the same mixed method study to address this assignment requirements.
Each data collection technique in your selected research article must match one of the followings:
Quantitative data collection techniques
Mail survey
Online survey
Telephone survey
Face-to-face survey
Qualitative data collection techniques
Interview
Focus group
Participant observation
Section 1: Two articles listed in ABDC
Provide full references and the ABDC journal ranking category (rating A*, A, B or C) of each selected articles in this individual assignment. Submit a pdf copy of the selected journal articles into the assignment dropbox and provide the URL access link to these articles in the assignment cover page.
Section 2: Address the following questions in this individual assignment:
Analyse the rationale given by the authors for the technique employed in data collection in each of the business research studies. In your analysis, determine whether the data collection technique is appropriate in each study
Evaluate the differences in data collection procedure and instrument used in each of the techniques
What are the advantages and disadvantages reported by the authors in using the respective technique in data collection? Are there any advantages or/and disadvantages not reported by the authors? Assess how these disadvantages may negatively impact the study and recommend strategies to overcome or mitigate the impact from these disadvantages
Briefly describe the data analysis techniques used in these studies. Evaluate the differences in data format and data analysis methods between the studies
Critically assess secondary data as a substitute and as a supplement to data collected through the quantitative and qualitative techniques in the studies
INSTRUCTIONS
To get started on your assessment task, please follow the below instructions.
The word limit for this individual assignment is 1,000 words and must be submitted via VU Collaborate
Please note selection of business research studies and ABDC ranking journals is entirely your choice. However, students are strongly encouraged to select business research studies in their enrolled discipline. It is important to note that the quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques should be selected from the given range of techniques stated in this assignment.
This assignment forms a part of the final mark for the unit, no assistance will be provided by the staff in relation to ascertaining whether your selected articles are appropriate for this assignment.
