Critical review

Due: 5 August

Length: 750 words

Curriculum mode: Report

You are the Nursing Unit Manager (NUM) of the Orthopaedic Ward. At the weekly Incident Monitoring Reporting meeting, your ward had a number of patient safety issues. Choose one clinical issue from the list below.

Hospital Acquired Infection- Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)

As the NUM, the Hospital Executive have asked you to implement a strategy to reduce the burden of your chosen clinical issue and provide a report that identifies how you are going to address your chosen issue.

As an Evidence-based clinician, you search the CINAHL database to find a primary research article (NHMRC level II evidence) and appraise the article using the appropriate checklist from the CASP Critical Appraisal Checklists:

https://casp-uk.net/casp-tools-checklists/Please use the following questions to structure you report to the Hospital Executive:

Describe the burden of the clinical issue (what if you do nothing)

Describe the proposed intervention and how this will impact the burden (what it the primary outcome of interest that will demonstrate the intervention has been effective)

Report on the quality of the study; (the studys ability to minimis bias; randomisation, blinding, intention-to-treat-analysis and outcome measures/length to follow-up)

Describe the plan for evaluation (whether the intervention is effective).

The report is short (750 words); therefore you need to be succinct in your writing. This is not an essay. The questions can be used as sub-headings throughout your report.

Marking criteria

Criteria Mark Pass

Describes the burden of the clinical issue /15 Quantifies the clinical issue e.g. describes the rate, impact on mortality, morbidity, increase length of stay, cost of treatment, patient dissatisfaction. Discussion is relevant to the context of the issue and demonstrates an understanding of the importance of addressing the issue in clinical practice.

Describes the proposed intervention /20 Description of the intervention is sufficient to establish a link to the clinical issue and how it will impact the incidence of the clinical issue. Clearly identifies the primary outcome of interest and secondary outcome measures.

Report on the quality of the study /40 The study is a suitable study design (NHMRC level II). The quality of study is appraised using the correct CASP checklist. The studys ability to minimise bias is critically discussed. A recommendation regarding the strength of the study is made.

Describe a plan for evaluation /15 The plan for evaluation is discussed and identifies suitable outcome measures and length of follow-up required to establish effectiveness of the intervention.

Academic writing and referencing /10 Academic writing is used with adequate sentence and paragraph structure for report writing. Intext referencing and reference list uses APA 7th edn and includes at least 5 academic resources (published/peer reviewed and less than 5 years old). Report adheres to the word limit (+/- 10%) excluding reference list.
