AN OUTLINE FOR A BOOK REPORT
A book report (review) is a critical estimate of a published work. There are a number of ways in which one can present his evaluation of a book. Yet all the reviewers should take into consideration the following points:
I. THESIS ARGUMENTS
METHOD OF PRESENTATION
One should identify and explain the main idea of the author in the beginning of his report.
The arguments used by the author to support his thesis should be evaluated and explained briefly. One should be able to explain whether the arguments used by the author were political, social, economic or religious. The order in which they were presented and the importance of each should be discussed.
One should be able to discern whether the presentation is chronological, topical or comparative.
SOURCES USED:
CONCLUS ION
There are basically two different types of sources used by a historian: PRIMARY (written records, report of a witness, artifacts etc.) SECONDARY (second hand reports, previous studies etc.)
Every reviewer should explain his or her reaction to the given work. It could be done as follows:
a. comparing authors thesis with anothers work;b. analyzing the style of the authors presentation;c. summarizing the main ideas of the author;or
explaining the significance of the book.
MECHANICS:
The title page of a book report should include the title of the book, authors name (to be centered), your name, course number, instructors name, and the date (in right hand lower corner). The quotations should be short and up to the point. Those taken from the same book should be indicated by a page number in a parenthesis next to the quotation. Other quotations or explanations should be footnoted.
