Abstract

United States of America imposed tariffs on different countries since mid of 2025, which will be applied on specified products other countries want to export to USA. This decision of USAs government has changed dynamics of international trade. Seeing it from the economical perspective, these tariffs has created uncertainties in the market of other countries. Australian market is also hugely impacted since as per new rules, minimum of 10% of baseline tariffs will be applied on specified products like steel and aluminium (Aigroup.com.au, 2025). This step of USA government has increased the prices of Australian steel in the market of US. Also, it has negatively impacted the industry of Australian steel industry due to trade diversions and exploring new markets for the products. In this report, we will analyse thoroughly how the new rules of tariffs have impacted the Steel industry of Australia. We will study different economic indicators which can help in understating the impacts in a better way.

Introduction

US tariff impact on World Economy

United States is the largest economy in this world and every decision made by this country impact the activities and economies of other countries. Since US government has introduced new and high tariffs rules for different countries imports, it has shaken the world economy. High rates of tariffs have increased the prices of products in US market which can directly put a negative impact on demand in the market (Ignatenko, et.al, 2025). World economies like India, China, Australia etc are facing global trade disruptions and planning to move to other countries for their exports. Continuous changing tariffs also put negative impact on the long-term investments and trade deals and it also results in the shift of supply chain.
Australian Steel Industry

Traditionally, Australian steel industry and USA have close economic ties as the steel imported by US from Australia was widely used for the defence projects in America. But, since mid-2025, when US applied high tariffs on the whole world, this picture of US and Australiss steel ties is also changed. The Government of Trump has imposed 25% of tariffs and then 50% later on the steel and aluminium imports from Australia (Aigroup.com.au, 2025). This step of USA has created disruptions in Australian economy. In this report, we will study the impact of new tariff rules on the industry of steel in Australian market and with the help of different economic indicators, broader flow-on-impacts will be evaluated.

The Australian Steel Industry and U.S. Trade Relationship

United states of America and Australia enjoys good industrial relations in terms of steel trade. Australia is a very important market for US since there are large defence projects where steel is used which is imported by US from Australia (Barich, 2025).
Structure of Australian Steel Industry

There are majorly two companies in the market of Australia which deal in steel manufacturing. These companies are Bluescope Steel and Arrium. Other than these companies, there are many other smaller companies too which contribute in the manufacturing of steel for the economy. In 2015, over 4.9 million tonnes of steel was produced by Australia and this industry employs large number of people in the country. Talking about their exports, Australia has exported almost $2.3 billion of iron and steel which makes it 37th largest exporter of these products in the world.

AustraliaU.S. Steel Trade

Although the trade volume between Australia and US is smaller, however seeing it from strategical sight, it is a very important deal for both of the countries. In 2024, US imported around $400 million of steel from Australia which included both primary steel and processed steel products (Australiansteel.com, 2025). This steel is used for manufacturing vehicles, defence products and other construction projects. In 2018, citing national security reasons, US imposed many tariffs on steel import from Australia which were later exempted permanently reflecting their important strategic relations.
Impact of U.S. Tariffs on the Australian Steel Industry

? Direct Price Competitiveness

USA has imposed 50% of tariffs for the import of steels for many countries which includes Australia too. As discussed earlier, in 2018, Australia was given permanent exemption from tariffs under section 232 of Trade Expansion Act of 1962. However, on 12th March, 2025, Trump government of USA applied 25% of ad valorem duty on steel products which was then increased to 50?fective from 4th June, 2025 (Aigroup.com.au, 2025). This step has directly impacted the prices of steel products for USA market. Due to high rates of these duties, the steel that will be exported to US by Australia will be sold at higher rates which can directly impact the market share for Australian economy. US-based importers then will have to look for alternatives of steel in other countries where they can get it in low prices. This will drastically decrease the profits margin for Australia and lose of a stable market share.

? Trade Diversion

Increased tariffs and duty rates for Australia steel export in US creates prices disruptions which eventually results in less market share in US market. In such situation, exporters try to find scope in the other regions of the world. Foe example, Asia, Middle east countries and European countries are approached for the trade deals. This shift of trade deals also come with many other adjustment costs like marketing costs and logistics costs. Shifting to new economies may also force Australian steel industry to cut down prices so that new market share in other countries can be achieved.

? Strategic and Economic Impact

Higher US tariffs have put negative impact by both mediums on Australian industry which is strategically and economically. From strategic point of view, now Australian Exporters will have to make new plans to shift to other economies for their steel exports and will have to make new marketing strategies to attract market shares in other countries (French, 2025).
Examining economic point of view, these new duty rates has drastically impacted the profits and exports volume for Australian steel industry. It has hugely impacted the revenue earned from steel exports and GDP of the country. Apart from this, employment in this sector is also affected with this decision of US government.

Evaluation: Impact on the Australian Economy

Since US government has announced new tariff rules for the import in the country, it has shaken global economy and created disruptions among countries. For Australia Steel Industry, US increased duty rates which impacted the industrys activities and the economy of the country as well. To understand the economic impact of these tariffs in broader way, here we will here evaluate these mentioned economic indicators:

? Export Revenue and GDP Impact

The imposition of 50% tariff rates on the export of steel products in US market has hugely impacted the volume of export and revenue generated from this trade. Approx $20 billion of steel is exported to the USA annually which counts 4% of total export of the industry of Australia, marking it 0.8% of countrys GDP. However, if we see, the share of steel exports is very limited in the GDP of the country. But still, it can impact other factors of the economy like investments, supply chains and other related industries. Many economists have predicted that due to these tariff rules, there may a decline of around US $250-300 million of exports of steel by Australian companies. This may impact the GDP of the Australia which can be less than 0.02% by 2030. But since these tariffs put some indirect impacts also, it can result in loosing 0.1% of GDP for Australia in the long run.

? Impact on Employment

The Australian steel industry employs around 1,11,000 people in the country. Talking specifically, in primary steel industry around 23000 people, in heavy fabrication industry around 45000 people and in medium and general fabrication manufacturing around 50000 people are working. Since US has imposed heavy tariff duties on the export of steel items, it has decreased profits margins and export revenue for companies in Australia. This directly leads to less output due to which job reductions are done in the industry and many people lose their employment. The connection of employment is directly related with demand and exports. Since, tariffs has created disruptions in the export volume of the steel industry in Australian industry, it also emerges risks of employment stability in the country.

? Trade Balance

US high tariff imposition has shaken the economy and trade balance of Australian Steel Industry. It has attracted huge costs, less export revenue, less profit margins which eventually has decreased trade surplus of the country. These new tariff rules have weakened the terms of trade for the Australian economy with US markets.

Conclusion

Increased tariff rules on steel products exported to US has put direct and adverse impact on the Australian Industry. It has resulted in reduction of price competitiveness, reduced revenue earned from steel exports, less profit margins earned from U.S markets. As read in the report, US initially gave some exemptions to Australian steel industry from tariffs as per section 232 of Trade Expansion Act of US, but later, new government of the country introduced new tariffs for Australian market and created disruptions in the industry and economy. For the global economy as well, US tariff rules have not worked well and it has impacted global trade hugely. For US, Australia is their 10th largest exporter of the steel and related products which contributes around 0.8% of total GDP of the Australian economy. High tariffs have results in reduced export revenue for the Australian companies which directly put impact on countrys GDP, employment stability and other economic factors as well. Due to this instability in US market, now Australian steel companies will have to explore other world economies Like Asia, Middle East regions and European countries for steel trade deals and will have to create new market share.

Recommendations

Despite these high tariffs rule in US market, Australia can still stand strong in the global economy for its steel industry. This country has strong resource base, skilled workers and good relations with world economy like US to tackle this situation. Here are some recommendations for the Australian steel industry by which the country can manage its export volume and profits easily.

? Market Diversification

Since, US government has imposed huge tariffs on the steel imports from Australia, the revenue for the Australian companies has been decreased drastically. It has resulted in the lose of market share in US economy. However, Australia still has the scope to find new markets for its steel products. The country can switch its trade to other countries in world like India, Middle east countries, Vietnam etc where infrastructure is still in developing stage (Toohey, 2025). Australia can do trade deals with these countries and can find new market base there. This will help Australian steel companies in reducing dependency on US markets and they can earn more revenue by exporting it to the less tariff countries.

? Develop Strategic Alliances

Australia and US have always maintained good strategic relations with each other since many years. The current US government has changed many rules of tariffs which created disruptions among other economies, but still Australia has a chance to mitigate these risks by adopting strategic approach with the US government (Elmuti and Kathawala, 2001). With its strategic moves, Australian government can offer some joint ventures to US and to other potential countries which can benefit to both the parties. Like Australia can approach other countries in their R&D programs, technological advancements etc. which in result can help in maintaining good strategic alliances and export of products can be run smoothly. These joint ventures and alliances can help Australian Steel industry in removing trade barriers and can give some new market base as well.
