Making the Case for Engagement

In these course assignments, you will envision yourself as the principal of your internship school. Each modules assignment is a section of a cumulative project proposing a new community engagement program to increase student achievement. Throughout the assignments, you will research family and community engagement benefits, review your schools current programs, and propose data- and evidence-based solutions to address student needs.

The Module 1 assignment focuses on the research phase of the cumulative project.

In this assignment, you will compose a research brief that differentiates community involvement from community engagement and presents the impacts of increased engagement on a schools culture, discipline, and achievement.

Step 1
Investigate at least six scholarly resources to analyze:

  • differences between parent/family/communityinvolvementandengagement

  • benefits of parent/family/community engagement related to the following areas:

    • school culture

    • student discipline

    • student achievement

Your resources may include the Module 1 readings and other current, peer-reviewed resources from the ACE Library. You may also explore PTA resources found online.

Chapter 1 ofBuilding Parent Engagement in Schoolsdefines parent/family/communityinvolvementandengagementas two separate practices.

Step 2
A research brief is a short, non-technical summary of findings intended for decision-makers. View theWriting a Research Briefvideo at the bottom of this page to better understand a research brief's format and purpose.

Then, conduct an online search to locate an online template to create your brief. Although it is not formatted like a traditional paper, you must still use APA-formatted writing style and include APA-formatted in-text citations and a reference list for at least six sources. Sources may consist of required readings, presentations, and your original research.

Step 3
Compose a 3- to 4-page research brief addressed to your internship school's appropriate official(s). Officials might be a superintendent, community liaison, the school improvement team, the school board, or another decision-making entity.

Your research brief should address the appropriate audience and:

  • differentiate parent/family/community involvement and engagement;

  • cite information from six professional/scholarly sources on the benefits of parent/family/community engagement, specifically related to school culture, student discipline, and student achievement; and

  • provide a clear, concise summary of findings intended for decision-makers.

Step 4
Use the Module 1 assignment rubric to informally assess your work and ensure you have met all requirements.

Then, submit your research brief.

Time-Sensitive Preview:In Module 2, you will work with your mentor to identify your internship schools partnership programs. Schedule a time to visit with them.
