Assignment overview
Supporting children’s social and emotional learning (SEL) and wellbeing necessarily involves more than a single educator; a whole-school/centre approach is vital.
This assignment asks you to a) formulate a case study of a child or children whose challenging behaviour suggests that they are struggling with their social and emotional wellbeing; and b) articulate how an educator can work with leadership, families, the community, and external agencies to provide a trauma-informed and restorative approach to supporting the child/children.
Step 1:
Create a fictional scenario involving challenging behaviour that you might encounter as an educator in the future. You are encouraged to draw on your experiences from placement(s), as well as examples in the literature to ‘flesh out’ the details of your scenario;
Step 2:
Critically examine what the SEL research literature suggests about the behaviour exhibited by the child/children;
Step 3:
Identify and critically examine an educator’s subsequent responsibilities, including school and legislative requirements; and
Step 4:
Outline how an educator can work with school/centre leadership and community, families, and external agencies to build a trauma-informed and restorative response to the child/children involved. You should draw on both research and your field notes/documentation from placement.
Structure and writing style
- Structure your case study like a report with subheadings to guide the reader.
- Always use respectful and sensitive language when describing children and educators.
