Exemplary Negotiation and Mediation Skills in Leadership: Mahatma Gandhi's Legacy

One of the greatest leaders of all times that I read in history was Mahatma Gandhi from India and he had exemplary negotiation and/or mediation skills. His leadership style revolved around non-violence and he used Satyagraha as the main, which demonstrated truth and integrity in all his actions against the British. He lead the non-violence movement against the British to remove the from their country- India and followed transparency, simplicity and truthfulness in his behavior everywhere he went. He followed these principles and irrespective of anything, he made sure that all the people nurtured belief in him with peacefulness and forgiveness against the unjust laws of the British (Khandelwal, 2020).

2. Explicate how the leader demonstrated negotiation and/or mediation skills in their context. (200 words)

Mahatma Gandhi was a great leader who demonstrated negotiation and/or mediation skills in their context where the British imposed unjust laws against the Indians in their own country. But Gandhi was determined to use non-violence and forgiveness against them and showered love, nonviolence and forgiveness with peaceful civil disobedience towards them. Irrespective of getting so much violence from the British side, he negotiated with them taking into consideration the path of truth or Satyagraha where he followed his own principles rigidly. He influenced the general public to struggle against the oppression and use non-violent civil disobedience against them in any case and was the leader of masses. He was a firm believer in values like truth, non-violence, non-cooperation, Satyagraha and forgiveness with inner peace and purification and all these were his mediation skills that helped him fight unjust laws of the British and bring change of heart in them that was most effective and long lasting. He also persuaded his client Dada Abdullah to accept payments from the loosing party in the form of installments who was the cousin of Abdullah and this action was intended to not ruin him completely. This act of Gandhi demonstrated the value of mediation, compromise, and conflict resolution and negotiation skills (Nair, 2021).

3. Contextualize how negotiation and/or mediation skills can be applied in a global public health setting. (200 words)

Negotiation skills can be applied to any industry and even in a global public health setting, it can be applied to help solve disputes that can arise and give rise to complications. This has to resolve quickly because this can impact the healthcare industry and put many lives at risk, and so the leader here should have good negotiation skills that can help him bring an end to any such type of disputes. Further, it can help to collaborate with others and can help improve the patients outcomes, which can help in advancements and developments in this industry. Mediations skills can help to refine the global public health setting because here the leader will be able to take into considerations different types of advices that can help to bring positive changes in the overall outlook of this industry. It will also help in peaceful conflict management in all stages of development of this industry especially when it comes to a global scale and can bring an end to any type of ongoing conflicts that are not easily solved. Finally, these skills can help to make the most from the advances of technology but at reasonable rates making public health setting affordable globally and more reliable (Nair, 2021).
