Part 3: Maria and Javier
To complete this part of the assessment, read the scenario and answer the questions that follow.
Scenario
You work with Indigo Community Services and Health Hub. Your supervisor has asked you to provide case management services for Maria and Javier. Both of these people have complex needs.
Maria is a 35-year-old woman who recently arrived in Australia. She is seeking asylum due to persecution in her home country. She has also fled from an abusive and violent relationship and has left her home, family, friends and support network behind.
Maria does not have legal documentation and is navigating the complexities of the immigration system while dealing with the traumatic experiences of domestic violence. The high-risk nature of Maria's situation is evident in the threat of deportation and the potential for her abuser to locate her in the new country. She is fearful of reaching out for help, as she is worried about being deported and losing her chance for asylum.
The complexity of Maria's case arises from the intersection of domestic violence, trauma, immigration challenges, language barriers, and limited knowledge of available resources and support services. Maria's lack of legal documentation also poses barriers in accessing healthcare, housing, and employment opportunities. You face the challenge of creating a culturally sensitive and trauma-informed case management plan that prioritises Maria's safety, immigration status and emotional well-being.
As the case manager, you must advocate for Maria's rights and safety while respecting her wishes and cultural beliefs. Building trust and a strong support network around Maria is crucial to ensure she feels safe and supported during the challenging asylum-seeking process.
Javier is a 42-year-old man facing difficult mental health challenges and financial struggles. He has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and experiences frequent manic and depressive episodes.
Javier's mental health condition has significantly impacted his ability to maintain stable employment and manage his finances. During manic episodes, Javier engages in impulsive spending, accumulating significant debt and making risky financial decisions. These behaviours worsen his financial struggles and create a cycle of stress and anxiety, leading to subsequent depressive episodes.
Javier's mental health crisis has also resulted in strained relationships with family and friends, leaving him with limited social support. As a result, he experiences feelings of isolation and loneliness, further contributing to his mental health challenges. The high-risk nature of Javier's situation is evident in the potential for self-harm during depressive episodes and the risk of severe financial repercussions due to his impulsive spending behaviour. Additionally, his homelessness risk increases due to his financial instability, as he struggles to pay rent and maintain housing.
The complexity of Javier's case arises from the need to address his mental health, financial literacy, employment challenges, social isolation, and housing stability. Coordinating services and support from various community service agencies and professionals is crucial for a comprehensive approach. Your challenge is to develop a person-centred case management plan that incorporates mental health support, financial counselling, employment assistance and social connections.
As the case manager, you must empower Javier in managing his mental health, finances and overall well-being effectively.
