Essay Assessment Instructions
DUE DATE: Wednesday 2nd April by 11:59pm
Task:
This assignment has TWO (2) mandatory components:
- written component 1000 words (maximum)
- oral defence component 5-10min live or on Zoom
- NOTE: sessions will be recorded
You are provided with a short 3-page article from New Scientist, a magazine that for people interested in science. This will form the basis of your essay.
NOTE: you are not permitted to use any form of generative AI to complete this assignment, including other programs and/or software such as Grammarly, which now use AI
Written Component
You will prepare an essay that addresses the following:
- summarise the KEY points of this article;
- identify who Lamarck was and provide a short description of his theory of evolution; and
- discuss whether the information in this article supports Lamarcks hypothesis about evolution
- document must be double-spaced
- font size cannot be less than 12pt
- you must use at least FIVE (5) references from peer-reviewed journals to support your discussion
- you must use the UNE APA Referencing 7th Edition guide for the in-text and full reference formats
Oral Defence Component
You will undertake a short 5-10min defence of the information in your essay. You will be asked questions about the decision-making process you used to create your essay and the information you provided. Additional questions will be taken from what you have written in your essay to assess your understanding of that information, such as being asked to explain why you drew certain conclusions.
Selecting Oral Defence Date/Time
You are provided with a list of dates and times for your oral defence. You can undertake this task on Zoom or in person. Either way, your session will be recorded to permit moderation. Selection of a date/time will be on a first come, first served basis until all slots are filled. Please note that once you have selected a date/time, you will be able to change it, provided there are still slots available.
NOTE: To ensure that a proper timetable can be created, selection will close on Thursday 3rd April
If you have an extension for this task, you are required to contact the Unit Coordinator, Anna-Marie Babey (AMB), by email to organise a date/time for your defence. If you do not contact AMB, your assignment will be incomplete. As it is mandatory to complete this assignment, you must complete all components.
