TASK
Writing a research proposal
Imagine that you are a Human Services/Social Worker or a student in Human Services/Social Work. You want to conduct a piece of research in an area of need/interest related to Human Services/ Social Work. In order to conduct the research, you need to put up a researchproposal that clearly outlines the research problem, literature review, the aims of your research, the significance of your research, the methodology (research paradigm, research methods, research instrument, sampling, recruitment strategy, data analysis) and the proposed plan( timeline and budget).
Assignments must be well-researched and referenced according to APA7 guidelines.
Helpful steps in completing this assessment task:
- Read, understand, and follow the steps in the research process in chapter 4, and get further information about developing your research proposal in chapter 19 of your textbook (Alston & Bowles, 2018).
- Pay particular attention to defining your research question.
- Share your research question and research topic with your subject coordinator for feedback you will have an individual online coaching appointment.
- Follow the research proposal template available on the Interact2 site.
- Give a brief outline of the timeline and an itemised budget for the study.
- Seek help from Ask-A-Librarian thread on the Discussion Forum.
Remember this is a proposal only; you are not required to conduct the research.
RATIONALE
This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:
- be able to critically evaluate research reports
- be able to prepare a research proposal concerning social issues
The students will show that they have developed the skills to needed to develop a research proposal concerning social issues (Learning outcomes 2 & 3).
PRESENTATION
The research proposal must be well researched, referenced in APA7, organised clearly, logically, and neatly presented. This includes correct spelling and punctuation. Subheadings or dot points should not be used. Assignments must be well-researched and referenced in APA7. Give a clear introduction and conclusion. Do not use long quotes.
Formatting
The following are expected:
- Your name, student number, and subject code will appear at the beginning of the paper
- The assessment topic is clearly stated
- 12 point font
- 5 or 2 line spacing
- Page numbers
- Word count

Word length
The set word length provides an indicator of the expectations regarding the depth and breadth of coverage of the topic. It is always a challenge to concisely present the essence of what you have learned from reading several sources. Although you should attempt to stay within the word limit you may go over or under by 10%. Any words beyond + 10% (2200) will be read and not included in the marking.
