Note: You must complete and submit an assessment cover sheet with your work. A template is provided in Appendix B of the Student User Guide. However, if your RTO has provided you with an assessment cover sheet, please ensure that you use that.

Activities

Complete the following activities:

  1. Carefully read the following:

This assessment task requires you to determine best-fit topologies for three Wide Area Networks (WANs). You can complete this project based on the networks, equipment and information provided by your assessor or for a business that you are working for.

If you choose to complete the project based on a business of your choice, it is important that you can access design documents relating to LANs to be incorporated into the WAN, network monitoring tools and network design tools, as well as equipment specifications and vendor product details and costs. Speak to your assessor to get approval if you want to base this on an organisation of your choice.

  1. Determine WAN needs.

i

Prior to commencing the task, you are to meet with the client to find out about WAN needs. This will ensure you have all of the information you need to determine best-fit topologies for three wide area networks.

If you are completing this in your RTO, the client will be your assessor and you will meet with them to get the information you need.

If you are completing this based on your own organisation, the client may be an internal client or an external client who you will need to meet with to find out requirements (remember you need to determine three WANs so this may be more than one client and meeting). You will need to provide a video or audio recording of this meeting so that your assessor can confirm your oral communication skills.

At the meeting, you will need to find out about:

scope of the work to be completed

current and future operational needs that impact on the WAN

budget available

stakeholders

other details including site access arrangements and timelines.

During the meeting, your assessor will be looking to see that you can demonstrate oral communication skills including:

speaking clearly and concisely using relevant language.

using questioning techniques to confirm information

using active listening techniques to confirm information.

At the meeting, make sure you ask questions to find out the information you need, as well as discuss some preliminary ideas and thoughts you have on the clients needs. You should ensure that all arrangements for accessing the site are confirmed at the meeting by finding out the information you need to.

Following the meeting, work on Section 1 of your Portfolio to include the information that you have been provided at the meeting.

  1. WAN needs.

You are now to continue to work on determining WAN needs assuming you are now on site. You are to:

Identify different LAN, wireless local area network (WLAN) and virtual private network (VPN) segments of each of the proposed WANs.

Conduct a functional analysis and determine segment needs

Estimate traffic content, volumes and organisational usage

Develop an organisational WAN functional matrix.

Complete Section 1 of your Portfolio.

  1. Create WAN specification.

You are to create a WAN specification. This is to include:

Details of the LAN, WLAN and VPN segments and associated resources requirements.

An explanation of how the physical environment has impacted on WAN design.

An outline of the WAN design that will cater for the amount and type of network traffic.

A design for redundant links in the proposed WAN connectivity for link backup purposes, in case the main link is disrupted.

Complete Section 2 of your Portfolio which will include a report on the most viable network topology for each WAN.

  1. Submit your completed Project Portfolio.

Make sure you have completed all sections of your Project Portfolio, answered all questions, provided enough detail as indicated and proofread for spelling and grammar as necessary.

Submit to your assessor for marking.

Arrange for site access to ensure security arrangements, legislation, work health and safety (WHS) requirements, codes, regulations and standards are met?

Identify and document different LAN, wireless local area network (WLAN) and virtual private network (VPN) segments of the proposed WAN?

Determine and report on segment needs based on a functional analysis for the WAN?

Estimate and report on network traffic content, volumes and usage by the business?

Develop and document a WAN functional matrix for the business following requirements?
