CONTEXT
The Mental State Examination (MSE) is a systematic method for observing, examining, and recording a person's emotions, thoughts, and behaviour. The MSE is a standard component of a mental health assessment. Not all practitioners will use MSEs in their scope of practice. However, learning about how to conduct a MSE will make you more focused on a persons presentation. This assessment item provides you with an opportunity to practice your MSE skills.
DESCRIPTION OF TASK
Weeks 5 and 6 of the course are dedicated to completion of an online training program about documenting MSEs and commencing your assessment item. The program should take you approximately 8 hours to complete. The modules include an overview of MSEs and information about each of the 9 domains including tips for practitioners. You will be asked to complete activities including watching videos and answering quizzes.
At the end of the training program, you will have an opportunity to apply all you have learned by documenting a practice MSE for John and comparing your version to ours. This will set you up well for your assignment which requires you to document an MSE for Dave. The video for Daves session is held on the course site in the Assessment 2 folder.
Please note that there can be minor variations in how MSEs are documented by organisations. For this assessment item, however, we need you to document your MSE according to this training program content (otherwise you will lose marks).
MARKING CRITERIA
Ability to correctly identify information for each of the mental state examination domains. (18 marks)
Ability to use the correct terminology to describe observations. (9 marks)
Accurate and appropriate use of quotes in the mental state examination. (8 marks)
Brief critique of how the mental state examination interview could be improved. (5 marks)
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR DOCUMENTING AND SUBMITTING YOUR MSE FOR DAVE
Complete the training program, making sure to complete all the learning activities as they will prepare you for your assignment.
A pdf version of the MSE training program which includes just the content (no activities) is in the Assessment 2 folder. You may find this useful when writing your MSE.
Download a copy of the blank MSE template included on the 7037HSV course site.
Watch the MSE interview video of Dave and use the template to complete your MSE.
Make sure to watch the video several times as you may pick up different things over a few viewings.
While watching the video, write down quotes that would be ideal for different sections of the MSE.
Once you have completed your MSE make sure to include an APA style title sheet and submit your MSE through the Turnitin portal on the 7037HSV course site.
TIPS FOR DOCUMENTING YOUR MSE FOR DAVE
Use respectful and non-judgemental language in your documentation.
Document what you observe, not your interpretations.
Use the correct terminology from the MSE training program.
Use the persons words (i.e., quotes) to demonstrate points.
Do not write in bullet points, use a narrative style.
TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR CRITIQUE
Your critique is about how the session could have been improved. For example, you could critique the questions the practitioner used, things that might have been missed or could have been asked in a different way.
Write your critique in paragraph format using APA7 formatting.
No referencing required.
SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT
You will need to submit your assignment via the course site.
Please submit your assessment in Word format (.doc or .docx) (not as a PDF).
Make sure to include an APA format title page that includes your name, student number and word count.
