54 participants from south Wales. 25 participants from north Wales. Remainder from across Wales. Explore first year students experiences and perspective to their transition to university. How students engagement and progress is impacted. 90 students were left to answer a questionnaire. 20 students were asked to join a more focused group to discuss answers in more detail. We found that students felt they was overloaded with lots of information within the first couple of weeks at university about exams and assignments. Some students also felt a bumpy ride as due to covid they had to watch lectures online. Students also felt they was disrupted as they had to watch lectures at home with family members around. This caused a major distraction.

Within the article the main barriers which we discussed between the students were transitioning, finance, health, confidence, learning difficulties, lack of support and culture.
