Synopsis of The Kind Ones
It is just like any other day of the week when thirteen-year-old Hugo attends Palmwoods State High School, just like it is any other day of the week. At his school, Hugo spends a lot of time outside of class with his friends on the oval. Despite his somewhat quiet, friendly appearance, Hugo has a reputation for being a very cheerful sloth.
The books first turning points comes when Hugo and Zach's friendship comes to an abrupt halt. This is because Zach, the buff, sporty student who is also Hugo's best friend, shows himself to be a person with a dark side. It breaks Hugo's heart to learn that Zach has been bullying him behind his back all these years and he never knew what was going on.
At the end of the school day, we are going to experience the next major turning point in the story. There have always been a few regular people in Hugo's life since he was a young boy, and Zach has always been one of those people. Zach is no longer seen as a friend to Hugo, but rather a dangerous foe due to how he treats him.
As a result of the end of Hugo's friendship with Zach, he also lost all of his other 'friends' and ended up with no friends at all at the end of the day. This made Hugo feel quite upset and lonely.
There is a climax in the story that is reached when Hugo visits the local park. After spending some time alone there, Hugo discovers that some children have approached him. He was taken by surprise when he realized that they were recent arrivals at his school. Hugo and these children ended up spending an afternoon together at the park chatting, getting to know each other better, and having a great time. When it was time to go home, Hugo felt happier and more comfortable around these children. He had finally found his true friends.
