Assessment overview

This assessment requires you to demonstrate your technical planning skills according to the Waterfall project methodology. You will present a slide deck containing planning diagrams as they relate to the traditional planning approach to project management.

Step 1

Select a project that you will use for your project plan. Some potential ideas include:

  • developing a new innovative consumer product
  • constructing a sporting and wellness centre aimed at young adults
  • integrating smart technologies into buildings to enhance the user experience
  • refreshing a telehealth platform to enhance remote healthcare services
  • constructing a shared footpath for community members
  • repurposing an empty retail space
  • hosting an event that celebrates multiculturalism, specifically for new migrants and refugees.

Step 2

Describe your project. Include the following elements in your slide deck:

  • Description, purpose, and background of your project e.g. what's included, excluded, assumptions and constraints
  • Justifications for using the Waterfall approach for this project
  • Consideration of whether the project will be strategic, operational or regulatory
  • Consideration of where your project is placed based on Turner's four project types

Step 3

Use the tools and techniques presented in this unit to develop the following diagrams in your slide deck:

  • 2-level work breakdown structure (WBS)
  • high level project plan
  • draft financials (budget and cost forecast).

Note:You will be developing these for your final assessment.

Do not include any elements in the monitoring and controlling phase. This forms part of the task in Assessment 2.

Step 4

You are tasked with inducting a new employee who has recently been assigned to the project. The employee has basic knowledge of project management and is located in another geographical area.Record an audio presentation over your slide deck (maximum five minutes) that explains your project plan to the new employee. You do not have to have the camera on during the recording, but if you wish to do so, you can.
