Background
Personality assessments are prolific, with many free to use assessments available online
that are utilised by individuals far and wide. Personality tests are used by individuals for
their own self-reflection and discovery, but, they are also embedded in multiple other
contexts.
Personality tests are often used in organisational contexts, especially in recruitment to add
another layer of information that guides decision making. Personality tests are embedded
within hiring processes to provide employers with information about a potential staff
member's personality characteristic to determine the best fit for their team. Psychology as a
discipline is guided by principles of evidence-based practice which entails consideration for
empirical research, client preferences and expertise of care provider (American
Psychological Association, 2021).

Within the workforce psychology experts often provide guidance and information to
external stakeholders about appropriate personality tests. These experts consider the
literature to provide information about the validity, reliability and utility of various
personality tests and provide guidance on what may be the best choice for the needs of the
stakeholders.

Task
In this task you are asked to imagine that you were a personality psychology expert who has
been contacted by a federal department. The department is seeking your expertise to provide information on a personality test. The department is expecting to use the
personality test to gain a sense of the underlying traits for their future candidates to determine the best fit to the organisation.

You are to choose one of two popular personality measures listed below and create a
presentation that would be suitable to be delivered to the federal department (i.e., your
audience is an educated but non-psychology population). Please choose one of the
following personality tests and create a presentation.

  • NEO Personality Inventory-Revised (NEO-PI-R)
  • Myers Briggs Type Indicator

In the presentation you should include the following:

  • Provide brief background information on the personality test,
  • Provide a brief description of what the test captures,
  • Describe and critique empirical research exploring the validity, reliability, and utility
    of the test,
  • Make a brief statement based on the research you explored about the test's

suitability for recruitment purposes.
You will need to create a PowerPoint presentation and a script that goes with it. You will
submit for marking.
