In your essay you should show a conceptual understanding of relevant sources, issues and the laws or policies that apply in relation to the assessment topic. You should critically engage in and analyse the issues presented as a stepping stone to formulating your own opinion on the assessment topic. |

We are looking for a logically structured and well-developed argument that addresses all facets of the research question posed. You should state your thesis (i.e., the central point of your argument) in the introduction to your essay. Each section of your essay should then support/provide further evidence in support of your argument/thesis. |

Written expression and structure

Your essay should be written in a concise and logical manner with correct spelling, punctuation, grammar and syntax (sentence structure). Your essay should have a logical structure with an introduction (what your essay is about and what its main argument/thesis is), a series of body paragraphs (providing context to all aspects of the research questions posed and addressing your opinion on the topic) and your conclusion. The use of headings and sub-headings is encouraged. |

Research and referencing |
We expect you to perform research beyond the course materials. Accordingly, you may refer to primary sources (i.e. legislation, explanatory memoranda, case law, if applicable). You may also refer to secondary sources, (i.e., books, journal articles, conference/research papers, reports if applicable) and any other sources that are relevant to the question (i.e. professional organisations) and your argument. Students must reference in accordance with the Australian Guide to Legal Citation, 4th edition with the use of footnotes. A bibliography (reference list) is not required. |

Presentation / Overall |
Your essay should be formatted to match the presentation requirements stated in the Assessment Instructions. Your essay should demonstrate original thought on the topic and that you have conducted comprehensive research. It should show that overall, you understand the law or policies relevant to the topic and that you can apply your understanding of these laws or policies to formulate your own supported opinion on the topic. |
