You have made a good start and have discussed some suitable referral options, however, there are some satisfactory requirements that have not been covered. Please have another attempt and consider the following:

- Please read out the required disclaimer that is located on the front cover page of this assessment.

- Katie has apparently been followed to your office by Steve, please discuss with Katie what you will do in this situation to keep her safe, i.e. alert the reception staff and your supervisor, lock all doors and entrances etc.

- Please discuss your duty of care and mandatory reporting obligations with Katie, i.e. she has been physically assaulted and as she is pregnant you have a duty of care to report this to Child Protection, Police etc.

- Please note- under no circumstance should Katie be encouraged to go back and confront Steve as this goes against our duty of care and mandatory reporting obligations, furthermore, he has threatened to kill her if she returns and he could potentially do so.

- Please consider that Katie might also need a medical check up as she has been assaulted and we need to ensure the wellbeing of both herself and her unborn child.

You work at CareShore in the community services office. You are responsible for facilitating case meetings to plan, monitor and review service provision for clients. In addition, your role requires you to manage work, health and safety (WHS) implications for the other members of the team, the clients and yourself when providing services.

A new client has come to your office looking distressed. The clients name is Katie. She says that she is 26 years old.

Katies clothes are dishevelled and her hair looks messy. She is crying and she has red marks on her face and arms. Katie also appears to be pregnant.

When you ask Katie if she is ok, she shakes her head.

After taking a few deep breaths, she tells you that she is fighting with her boyfriend, Steve. Katie says that she lives with Steve and doesnt want to go home.

After further discussion, Katie informs you that Steve regularly takes ice and can be abusive when under its influence. Katie is frightened for her life and that of her unborn child. She says, if I go home now, hes gunna kill me. Katie then tells you that she is frightened that Steve might have followed her to CareShore.

Ask a friend, family member or colleague to play the part of Katie. Ask Katie to set the scene by messing up their hair and looking frightened.

Start recording. Read the disclaimer text (in the Brief section of this document) clearly to all participants.

Start your role-play. You should demonstrate the following four (4) steps in addressing this situation and reducing the risks, using a person-centered approach:

ASSESSMENT 2 Katie and Steve.

Me: So, please tell me, in brief, all the concerns you have with Steve.

Katie: No doubt Steve loves me but from the past few months after I conceived, he has started being physically abusive. He is into consuming ice and becomes very aggressive when he is under its influence. I am scared for me as well as for the baby inside me that he will kill me if I meet him next.

Me: Considering your present situation, I feel that it is important that you be informed of the possible risks for you as well as for your unborn child. From what I have perceived, the situation is not so good and so, the risk is high regarding your pregnancy and also as a matter of human being.

Katie: Can you please explain how?

Me: Sure. Since you are pregnant, it is not only you but even your child that is getting affected. Babies have the ability to understand each and every activity and respond to it even if they are inside their mothers womb. Therefore, the level of risk of your boyfriends behavior towards you and the unborn baby is high. So much so, such abusive behavior may also impact your baby once he or she is born because since your partner is under the ice influence, and if the child sees him physically abusing you, their childhood will be at stake.

Katie: Understood. What about my relationship with Steve?

Me: See, we all know that being in a relationship, people have to adjust in a number of ways and even tolerate some habits of their partner. However, what should not be okay is the physical or emotional torture. As a matter of human right, you must live with dignity, and where you feel that the dignity is being sacrificed, you must take the necessary steps.

Katie: Can you please help me out with some of the strategies that can help reduce the risk to me and my unborn child?

Me: Sure, but before anything, the first thing is that you have to be mentally strong.

Katie: Yes maam. I will do my best for my unborn childs interest. Please tell me the options.

Me: Good to hear that, strong woman! The first option is that you can go home and confront Steve as to what are the internal issues, he has with you. Thereafter, make him realize that it is not only you but its the baby as well who is getting harmed. The second way out is that you find a safe place like your mothers house or somewhere else where Steve will be restricted to behave with you as he does presently. Lastly, if all of this does not stop, the final option is to file a police complaint against him.

Katie: So, what should be my next step?

Me: I will connect you with a private counselor who will help you out with the situation. Till then I can take you to a safe place, where you can stay for some days and decide on what should your next step be.

Katie: Thank you so much for your help and support!
