A 75-year-old female in good health with normal cholesterol levels and no chronic diseases has made an appointment to see the GP. She comes to the clinic because she is starting to notice that she is forgetting things more often and having problems balancing her check book and playing brain teaser games with her grandchildren. Her husband says he hasnt notice anything different about her. But shes fearful that she might be getting Alzheimers Disease. She said her neighbour told her that Lipitor is supposed to help with the symptoms or maybe even prevent Alzheimers disease(AD). She wants your advice. Would this help? You recall a few patients complaining about memory problems while on statins but dont know the data on reducing the risk of AD or associated cognitive symptoms. You tell her youll get back to her. You ask her about any other medications she might be on, and she tells you that she is taking Sporanox for a toenail infection.

Students will investigate a clinical issue provided in a scenario, using the PICO format. In this assessment students will address the first two stages of the evidence-based practice process, which include formulating an answerable question and acquiring the appropriate evidence.

Students are required to:

1. Formulate the four/five components of each PICO(T) question related to the given scenario.

2. Identify 2 databases to begin literature search for evidence.

3. Show and briefly explain search strategies undertaken to find the relevant literature in one of the two databases.

4. Identify two relevant pieces of evidence from your search.
