B91RP: Coursework One Brief Seminar Report

Assignment Introduction and Aims

Research seminars and webinars provide a forum with the aim to facilitate academic discourse. The school of Engineering and Physical Sciences (EPS) organises various seminars in the University for staff and students to attend. The seminars are a forum to hear about new developments and to share ideas, which may have an impact on our research. Many companies and organisations present similar addresses in a webinar forum to allow for international reach.

The programmes that individuals in this class are taking involve staff from the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering (IB3) as well as the Institute for Chemical Sciences. The members of these institutes represent a wide range of research areas however, collaboration can, and does, occur.

As MSc students, you will be expected to have knowledge beyond the confines of your discipline and attending the seminars is an excellent way of finding out what issues are important to industry and the scientific community at large. Another good reason for attending seminars is to learn from the speakers as to the style of technical presentations. Lectures are very different from technical presentations, and you may find some useful pointers on what to do and not to do.

The aim of this assignment is for you to attend or view a minimum of three seminars or and write a critical analysis for three of these events.

Assignment Learning Outcomes

By completing this assignment, you will be able to:

  • Critically appraise experimental information with appropriate validation against developed theory or published works.

Assignment Brief

You have been provided with a calendar for the IB3 seminars in January and February and you have also been provided with a list of links to appropriate webinars. 1. Problem: What and how were the problems to be addressed? What scientific principles/theories were used?

  1. Future: What else could you do if you were to continue the project?

The upcoming weekly schedule of IB3 and ICS seminars will be advertised, usually these take place on a Wednesday afternoon. You are encouraged to attend as many of the seminars as possible, these are often hybrid events.

The maximum wordcount for this summary is 1750 words (500 words per summary). You should include the title of the presentation, the name of the presenter(s) and the institution/company providing the seminar/webinar, these are not included in the word count. Your writing will be of an appropriate scientific writing style and will be within 5% of the designated word count. References of an appropriate quality should be used to support your writing and they are to be cited in the Harvard style.

There is no template for this coursework, but your submission must include your full name, H number and the total word count for your report.

All submissions for B91RP must be conceptually your own work and written in your own words. You may not use artificial intelligence to write your assignment; if you use AI to help you help you research your ideas, for help with translation of technical content (for students for whom English is not their first language) or to aid you in understanding complicated concepts you must declare this in the references section. You can find details on how to do this here: Citing and referencing generative artificial intelligence tools (e.g. MS Copilot). You should also bear in mind that AI is not infallible, and you should always check that the information that it has provided you is correct. To pass off as your own, ideas or text taken directly from others without acknowledgement is intellectually dishonest. Before marking, all B91RP submissions are checked for similarity, using the Universitys Turnitin software as a tool to check for plagiarism against any published work or any submission made to the university and other universities. All suspected cases of academic misconduct will be referred to the University Disciplinary Committee.

Assessment Guidelines

Please refer to the ICBD B9 Course and Assessment Guideline document available on Canvas for more information on university policies and other information on assignment submission.
