Assessment description

Education is a key component within the scope of a Registered Nurse, this assessment supports students to develop skills that will support them to transition into their profession and contribute to their overall learning journey.

You are a new graduate clinician presenting a short education session to other new graduate clinician within the interdisciplinary team.

The topic of your presentation isFluid and Electrolyte Imbalanceand you are using Dorothy's (Attached separately) as an exemplar to demonstrate the application of the concept/s to case for your peers.

Assessment instructions

Students are required to create a narrated PowerPoint presentation, based on the assigned topic and case scenario (exemplar), that is 6-7 minutes in duration and submit a transcript of their presentation for text matching.

The presentation will need to address the following points:

  • The impact ofFluid and Electrolyte Imbalance, related to the exemplar provided,on the health and wellbeing of individuals in Australia,
  • An overview of the relevant pathophysiological concept/s, including:

    • the variation to homeostasis occurring,

    • common clinical manifestations that are identified through nursing assessment when a person is experiencingFluid and Electrolyte Imbalance, and

    • a pathophysiological rationale for common clinical manifestations identified in relation to the concept/s being discussed, and

    • goals of treatment in relation to the case scenario provided.
  • Discuss the nursing implications/considerations when providing care to a person experiencingFluid and Electrolyte Imbalance,in relation to the case scenario provided.

All students are required to use professional language and terminology appropriate for the target audience, outlined below. Key terminology relevant to the pathophysiological state should be used with clear integration of meaning and definitions to ensure audience understanding is supported during the presentation.

The presentation is to be a total of eight (8) slides, including a title slide and reference slide. Any content presented after seven (7) minutes, will not be marked. Penalties related to duration will be applied in line with the marking rubric provided on canvas. Students are strongly encouraged to avoid presentations that do not meet the minimum duration of six (6) minutes, it is unlikely that the assessment will address the requirements of the assessment as set out in the marking rubric.

Students are required to submit both:

  1. The PowerPoint presentation into canvas as a video assessment.
  • Students are required to save their assessment using one of the following file extensions .mp4 or .mov

  1. A copy of their transcript with relevant citations.

  • This component is to be submitted to Ouriginal for text matching purposes.Please note this assessment will be reviewed by the Universitys plagiarism checking software (Ouriginal) and, with reasonable grounds, be subject to further inquiry through the Office of the Associate Dean of Education.

Students must submit original work, that has not been previously submitted for assessment. Self plagiarism is grounds for referral for academic misconduct. Students are reminded that the Student Conduct Rules related to the submission of original work and academic integrity must be upheld during this assessment. Any images used (including flowcharts or concept maps) must be the students own original work, with the relevant source/s used to develop the image cited in line with APA 7 guidelines. Any instances of suspected academic misconduct will be referred to the ADE (Health) as per University Policy.

Students are required to submit their files in the following order:

  1. The PowerPoint presentation (.mp4 or .mov) is to be submitted first.
  2. The Transcript of their presentation (.docx) is to be submitted second.

Assessment formatting guidelines

  • The PowerPoint presentation must be saved as either .mp4 or .mov
  • The transcript must be saved in docx.
  • APA 7 style must be used for referencing in both the PowerPoint presentation and the transcript.
  • Students' names are not to be included on any assessment tasks/submissions. Only student ID numbers should be included

Tips and tricks for success

  • Commence preparation on the assessment early

    • Staring at the beginning of semester and continuing to revise and add ideas as you explore different concepts each week.

    • Thoroughly research your topic.

    • Be clear of the concepts you want to include and map the key principles related to each of them (an any interrelations).


  • Plan your presentation and make sure that you include requirements outlined in the task description and rubric.
  • Consider presentation of information on the slides including, but not limited to:

    • Font size

    • Background colour and style

    • Volume of information presented on each slide Students are strongly encouraged to present summary points on their slides that are supported by the narrated content.

    • Avoid reading the slides to the audience


  • Consider the use of terminology and level of detail provided to ensure audience understanding is supported during the presentation.
  • Practice a couple of times before you record and submit
  • Be confident! You have worked hard on your assessment, be proud of your work.

Expectations

It is expected that students will:

  • undertake a broad search of relevant academic nursing literature,
  • use high-quality literaturepeer reviewed literature and textbooks contextualised to the Australian Healthcare setting.
  • demonstrate integration of learning from workshops and modules
  • demonstrate a scholarly approach in relation to use of other researchers and authors ideas

It is expected that in relation to the PowerPoint submission students will:

  • Seek support from DITM Service Desk well in advance of the due date, for assistance and troubleshooting advice relating to the recording and/or upload of their assessment
  • Proofread your work and review audioquality and clarity

In relation to the overall assessment it is expected that students will:

  • follow steps outlined in this assessment overview regarding upload of documents,
  • seek support in the event they are unfamiliar with using the learning management system (canvas)

Historical student matters

  • Use of jargon and identification of complex processes without sufficient description to address the needs of the target audience.
  • Submission of work that did not align with the task description and/or marking rubric
  • Being unfamiliar with software and/or submission requirements impacting on timely submission in line with assessment instruction
  • Uploading of incorrect or incomplete file
  • Audio of the narrated PowerPoint not clear or incomplete.
  • Audio of the narrated PowerPoint not present, submission includes slides only
  • No PowerPoint submitted - only a transcript provided.
