NURSING VALUES:
Introduction
Professional nursing values form the foundation for ethical, patient-centered care, guiding the delivery of evidence-based and compassionate services. The alignment of these values with those upheld by healthcare organizations is essential in fostering high-quality patient care and workplace integrity. Organizations like Rockingham General Hospital, which prioritize values that reflect the principles set forth by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, create an environment that supports nurses in their practice and enhances patient outcomes. Research by Mistri et al. (2020) demonstrates that job satisfaction and patient care are significantly improved when nurses values align with the organizational culture. This alignment ensures that healthcare delivery remains compassionate, safe, and effective, contributing to better patient experiences.
Reflection
My nursing practice develops through applying and prioritizing three essential values: compassion, integrity, and patient-centered care practices. Nursing relies on these core values to deliver the highest ethical and safe patient care (Scott, 2024). Patients build trusting professional relationships with their nurses through the practice of compassion (Ali et al., 2024). An Aboriginal client with advanced COPD, whose breathing difficulties had worsened, presented to my care during the clinical placement. I stick to NMBA Registered Nurse Standard 2.2 by demonstrating therapeutic relationships with clients and communicating effectively while respecting their dignity, culture, beliefs, and values (NMBA, 2016). I also delivered the necessary care and support, guiding the client to use resources aligned with NMBA standard 2.5 (Allande-Cuss et al., 2021; NMBA, 2016). While complying with NMBA standard 6, which entails providing safe, appropriate, and responsive care, I discovered that the client was at risk of experiencing a medication error due to inadequate documentation (Alrabadi et al., 2021). Consequently, I reported the issue to my RN to correct it (NMBA 6.6), thereby preventing harm to the client and preserving the profession's integrity (NMBA, 2016).
Such care for the client aligns with NSQHS Standard 2; partnering with the consumer reflects the essence of patient-centered care, which is one of my core nursing values (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHS), 2021; Huang et al., 2022). Additionally, I informed the client of the potential damage. I verified whether the medication was administered to ensure effective communication and a shared partnership, which resonates with this NSQHS standard (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021; ACSQHS, 2021). In addition, I practiced NSQHS standards such as communication for safety by promptly notifying the concerned RN about the risk of administering a double dose to the client due to insufficient documentation (Frost, 2024). I also addressed NSQHS Standard 5: Comprehensive Care Action 5.7 by ensuring person-centered communication through active listening, reassuring, and applying breathing techniques with patients (Martin & Jones, 2023).
Professional accountability, which is closely linked to integrity, was demonstrated through my adherence to NSQHS Standard 4: Medication Safety, Action 4.5, by ensuring accurate documentation and reconciliation while also promoting patient-centered care that encourages shared decision-making and active participation, ultimately fostering self-determination for the patients (Alrabadi et al., 2021; ACSQHS, 2021). Similarly, while providing care to clients, I adhere to the ICN code of ethics element one by fulfilling my primary responsibility of delivering care and showcasing professional values of compassion and responsiveness, which align with my core nursing values (ICN, 2021).
Healthcare Organisation Alignment
The healthcare organization I have identified is Rockingham General Hospital, and its core values align closely with my professional nursing beliefs. Rockingham General Hospital has made significant strides in providing excellent patient care, strongly emphasizing compassionate and high-quality healthcare. This approach reflects a commitment to the dignity of all individuals, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances (Ali et al., 2024).
The hospitals core values of compassion, respect, teamwork, excellence, and accountability reflect its dedication to delivering holistic, patient-centered care that addresses not only physical health but also emotional and psychological well-being. These are values that resonate deeply with me in my nursing practice. The focus on compassionate care ensures that patients feel supported, valued, and respected throughout their treatment, a belief I strongly uphold as part of my professional values (Huang et al., 2022). The emphasis on excellence also aligns with my commitment to continuous learning and delivering evidence-based, high-quality care to all patients. At Rockingham General Hospital, the work environment encourages nurses to provide ethical care while fostering their professional growth (Rockingham General Hospital, 2025). This alignment between my values and the hospitals mission makes it an ideal workplace where I can continue to develop my professional skills while contributing to a compassionate, high-standard healthcare setting (Kwame & Petrucka, 2021).
Comparison
Reflecting on the values upheld by the Rockingham General Hospital, many stand in alignment with my nursing values, especially those of accountability, integrity, and patient-centered care. To the above-mentioned values of compassion, respect, and excellence in patient care, I am similarly committed to providing empathetic and high-quality services. For instance, the hospital's emphasis on patient-centered care is consistent with my faith, respecting patient autonomy and advocating shared decision-making, as described by Alrabadi et al. (2021). This approach emphasizes respecting self-determination through promoting the active participation of patients, which is a value central to achieving positive health outcomes.
Besides, respect, as defined by Rockingham General Hospital, also means embracing and appreciating diversity in its patient population, ensuring equity in access to health care, and promoting cultural competence. This goal sits in direct alignment with my value of altruism. Altruism pushes me to serve as an advocate for these marginalized groups, including people from CALD backgrounds, so that they are serviced correctly in all aspects of medical care (ACSQHS, 2021). Such core values help to ensure an inclusive environment where patients and healthcare personnel can thrive.
Having a compatible value set is essential for nurses' well-being and the quality of patient care. Dunning et al. (2021) state that when an organization's values and those of the nurses working within it are congruent, patient care receives a boost, safety is enhanced, and nurses are supported in the context of their practice. This congruity guarantees that organizational objectives are met and also establishes a culture where high-quality, compassionate care becomes the goal.
Conclusion
Reflecting on my professional nursing values, I identify compassion, integrity, and patient-centered care as central to my practice. These values align strongly with those of Rockingham General Hospital, prioritizing compassion, respect, and excellence in all aspects of patient care. This alignment strengthens my commitment to ethical, high-quality nursing practice. Understanding the importance of value-based care will positively impact my future career as a Registered Nurse moreover I provide holistic atient centred care to my patients .
Selection criteria:
Students are to use the following template:
Selection Criteria Table
|
Student clinical placement experiences:
(Please insert clinical placement units completed in the BN e.g., NUR 138, NUR 238, NUR 247. If you have joined the BN from another university or TAFE please outline your clinical experience). |
1. Selection Criteria 1 Demonstrates clinical knowledge in the delivery of evidence-based nursing care within a clinical setting: |
2. Reflection (word count 300 words +/- 10%) I was asked to administer the medication clexane to one of my allocated patients during my NUR247 placement at Rockingham General Hospital. This practice is in line with NMBA standard 6.2, 6.5, which states that nurses must practice within their scope of practice and adhere to evidence-based guidelines to prevent medication errors and administer medicine while adhering to patient policies and procedures. Under my registered nurse's supervision, I was asked to administer the medication to my allocated patient. Firstly, I started by doing the six correctly with my registered nurse and checking for any allergies that the patient may have. The NMBA standard 6.1 provides complete, safe, high-quality practice to achieve agreed goals and results that are responsive to people's nursing needs. I begin by reviewing my patient's medical history for any allergies or potential adverse drug reactions before administering the medication. Before administering the medication, I reviewed the medicine chart with my registered nurse and did the six proper medication checks, which included the patient's name, dosage, drug, and route. Then, I prepared the medication and successfully administered it under the supervision of my RN. Therefore, the NSQH 4.5 and 4.6 ( mediation reconciliation ) are linked with this practice ( Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health). By NMBA (2017) standard 2.1: Engage in a therapeutic and professional relationship, I first established a therapeutic relationship with my patient by asking for their consent and checking the medication's expiry date. Then, I began explaining the procedure step-by-step. In the end, I educated my patients to monitor if they experienced any side effects from the medication. The patient gave me positive feedback and was very happy with my mediation administering skills. In the future, I will follow all the steps to avoid medication errors. |

1. Selection Criteria 2 - Demonstrates ability to work within a team in a clinical setting and practice in accordance with the NMBA RN professional standards: |
5. Reflection (word count 300 words +/- 10%) During my fourth rotation at Rehab ward , I participated in multidisciplinary teams that included healthcare workers such as Registered nurses, enrolled nurses, and allied health professionals to provide patient-centered care. I cared for an elderly patient undergoing total knee replacement. When I was caring for a patient recovering from a total knee replacement, I wanted to make sure to reduce the pain the patient was experiencing and needed mobility assistance to prevent any complications. I felt overwhelmed by how I was going to handle my patient. However, I communicated with a physiotherapist to mobilize and talk with my RN so I could administer pain medication to my patientthis practice line with the NMBA standard 2.6, which Is to engage in therapeutic and professional relationships. Therefore, I participated actively in the handover meeting and confidently conveyed the patient's progress and concerns. I worked with the physiotherapy team, assisting them in safe patient mobilization following standards and protocols that align with the NMBA standard 6.5, which provides safe, appropriate, and responsive quality nursing practice. I also worked with the RN supervisor to ensure pain medication was on time and looked for any side effects. My effective teamwork and compliance align with NMBA standard 2.8, which states that RNs are to practice collaboratively, and 7.1, which states that they evaluate outcomes to inform nursing practice. Communication and effective teamwork significantly contributed to the patient's wellmanaged pain and successful regaining mobility within the expected recovery time frame. The CNF and my buddy nurse gave me positive feedback that I was proactive in coordinating care and contributing to nursing practice, which aligns with the NMBA standards 2.1 and 2.7, which are engaged in therapeutic and professional relationships. |

Selection Criteria 3: Demonstrates effective communication skills and conflict resolution skills within a clinical setting |
1. Reflection (word count 300 words +/- 10%) During my NUR 238 at St John of god hospital, there was a time when I needed to communicate clearly and solve a conflict, which was required by the NMBA standards. One of my patient's pain medications was given late; therefore, this made my patient very angry, so I had to use my communication skills to calm him down. The patient recently came from abdominal surgery; he was in much pain and became very upset when his pain medication was given late. The patient became increasingly angry with the staff and tried to raise his voice. In this situation, I deal with the patient in a very responsible way. I tried to stay calm, and I paid attention to listening to my patient's concerns. I used therapeutic communication techniques and reassured him that he was taking the right steps to control his pain. I also respected his wishes and told him in a very polite way why his pain medication was being late. This practice meets these NMBA standards (2.1, 2.2, and 2.3), But I kept my body open, which showed that I was listening. Then, I communicated with my nurse to figure out when we could administer his second pain medication. I also offered him hot/cold packs to make him feel better, which helped him calm down because I was reassuring him and talking about his needs. My patients felt heard and comforted when I talked to them in a caring way. The problem was successfully solved, and he took his painkillers as soon as me and my RN prepared it. Toward the end of my shift, my buddy RN complimented my patient care skills, which made me feel better about my ability to use good communication and conflict resolution skills. Overall, this experience during my placement showed me that communication is an important part of nursing, which aligned with NMBA standard 5.2; it also helped me understand how important it is to communicate and solve conflicts in the healthcare industry. |

8.Selection Criteria 4: Demonstrates understating of and commitment to the principles of quality improvement and risk management within practice: |
4. Reflection (word count 300 words +/- 10%) Introduction: I have understood that nursing practice, quality improvement, and risk management are critical to help us guide safe and patient-centered care. I realize that following values is important to improve healthcare delivery quality. As a third-year nursing student participating in an Acute Deterioration detection system (ADDS) chart audit performed in the week four tutorial, which was attended by every student in the class, This audit basically involved filling out the A-ORC audit tools and find the areas that has errors , which was provided by the university's LMS. While I was looking at the audit my task was to check every point which was present in the checklist of the audit tool and match it with the ADDS charts which made me felt worried . Then I communicate and discuss with my group peers to review the patient's chart which is relevant to the standard 2.8, therefore I felt relax and had an idea how to review the ADDS chart . Overall, this whole audit aligns with the NSQHS standard 8.4 (a) (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, 2021). When our tutor went through this audit as a whole class we found some errors in some of the ADDS charts that were given to us which were linked to inconsistencies in documenting patient observations, which can cause a great risk to patient safety. We recorded our findings and thought critically about how they will affect patient care. Overall, this class audit assignment gave me an excellent chance to apply knowledge of risk management and quality improvement techniques. During the class, we discussed how these errors may be fixed, and accuracy might be improved following the discovery of the gaps and inequalities in the documentation. This experience helps me to understand the need for ongoing observation and assessment of standard nursing procedures using audits. I am going to be dedicated in the future not only to the patients but also to promoting patient-centered care and bringing strong positive changes in the healthcare system. |

Career Learning Goals
In five years, I want to become a Registered Nurse who works in a specialized acute care unit such as an ICU. I want to use the advanced skills and knowledge which I will develop through these experiences to provide quality patient care, increase my clinical practice, and establish myself as a professional in an ever-changing healthcare setting.
My first SMART learning objective to help me achieve my five-year career plan is to gain experience within the acute setting by securing a graduate RN position in a hospital within my first year after graduation and attending any workshop linked to the NMBA 6.03, partnering with consumers standards as this will enable me to develop therapeutic communication skills, enhance my critical thinking and practice effectively under pressured environments.
My second SMART learning objective, which will help me achieve my five-year career plan, is to attend the workshop and online modules to expand further certification within my specialty. Therefore, I plan to complete an Advanced life support (ALS ) certification by doing the online modules and attending the hands-on workshop at a hospital within the first 2 years of my RN. In the future, after three years of my graduation, I will take part in a nursing career such as the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCNC).
My third SMART learning objective is to maintain ongoing professional development through mentorship and postgraduate studies to achieve my five-year career goal. By my fourth year, I plan to pursue a postgraduate critical care nursing degree to expand my experience and become eligible for potential leadership positions.
