Question Task Id: 0

Topic Allocation:

Students will individually write about their allocated group presentation medical condition, that is cystic fibrosis, diabetes, familial hypercholesterolemia, phenylketonuria or Tay-Sachs. For example, if your group condition was cystic fibrosis, you will write about cystic fibrosis.

Task Description:

You will research your disease and present your findings to two audiences:

  1. A group of doctors and nurses, and
  2. A group of patients and patients’ carers.

The information you need to present to both audiences will be based upon scientific knowledge referenced from appropriate books, journal and websites. As a nurse, you will have to educate patients on how to care for themselves in relation to specific diseases. You will need to be able to communicate scientific information in a way that can be understood by patients with very little or no scientific background. For each audience you will need to:

  1. Provide a description of the disease you are presenting, including signs and symptoms of the disease,
  2. Discuss the cause/s of the disease, including specific details of the body cell, cell structure, body system or body systems involved in the disease, and
  3. Discuss the treatment options and long term implications (morbidity and/or mortality rate) of the disease.

You will need to use different language for the two groups (for more information see ‘Research Assignment Report Format’ below). You will use APA 7th referencing style.

You will need to include at least 5 references from 3 different sources (e/books, e/journals, websites).

You will include an Appendix at the end of your research assignment (after the reference list) with a photo/image of the first page of each article, e/book, e/book chapter or web page you referenced (for more information see ‘Research Assignment Report Format’ below).

Research Assignment Report Format:

Length: Your research assignment will be 1500 words (+/- 150 words) excluding references, appendix, figures and tables.

Format: You research assignment will have the following sections in this order: Section 1, Section 2, Section 3, References, Appendix. Your research report will be typed with 1.5 line spacing using Times New Roman, Calibri or a similar font and be justified.

An example research assignment, marking rubric and research assignment checklist are available on the ‘Research Assignment’ page under the “Assignments” menu tab on Canvas to help you complete your research assignment. Look at the example research assignment to help you with the format of your assignment.

Section 1: Length 600 words (approximately)

In Section 1, you will be presenting information about your disease to a panel of doctors and nurses for the points listed in the ‘Task Description’ above. The language you use will be formal and technical. For example, you will use medical terminology to describe your disease’s signs and symptoms.

Any information presented in Section 1 will need to be paraphrased and referenced correctly. Work through the ‘Research Assignment Learning Module’ on the ‘Research Assignment” page to understand how to paraphrase correctly before writing Section 1.

Section 2: Length 600 words (approximately)

In Section 2, you will be presenting the information about your disease from Section 1 to a patient and their relatives/carers. You will need to use everyday language to describe the disease to your patient and their carers’. The language in this section will be very different to the language you used for Section 1. To write this section well, you must have a comprehensive understanding of your disease and how it affects cell structure and function and the relevant body system/s. In this section you will demonstrate your level of understanding of the disease, and the scientific principles underpinning it.

You do not need to reference in Section 2 unless you include a figure, diagram or table. Section 2 of the example research assignment contains an example of how to reference a figure.

Section 3: Length 300 words (approximately)

Using Gibbs Reflective Cycle, write a reflection on your experience of researching and completing this assessment item, identifying areas you could improve and develop in your future studies. Reflective practice is important for nurses and midwives. It allows them to continually assess and improve their practice. Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle covers 6 stages of reflection:

  • Description of the experience,
  • Feelings and thoughts about the experience,
  • Evaluation of the experience, both good and bad,
  • Analysis to make sense of the situation,
  • Conclusion about what you learned and what you could have done differently, and
  • Action plan for how you would deal with similar situations in the future, or general changes you might find appropriate.

As an example, you may write about which section of the assignment was easy or hard to write. You may also write about how you found researching the information for this assignment. Talk about what you found hard, what you found easy. Further information about Gibbs Reflective Cycle, can be found on the ‘Research Assignment’ page. Section 3 in the ‘Example Research Assignment’ gives you an example of how to write your reflection.
