In Week 1, we learned about the "Digital Firm". I learned that the digital firm provides a new way to describe organisations that operate differently than the traditional brick and mortar business because of broad sweeping changes in technology and global markets (Laudon & Laudon, 2009). I also learned that digital firms place an emphasis on the digitisation of business processes and services through sophisticated technology and information systems. In addition, I learned that these information systems create opportunities for digital firms to decentralise operations, accelerate market readiness and responsiveness, enhance customer interactions, as well as increase efficiencies across a variety of business functions. My research helped me understand that the Digital Firm is a kind of organisation that has enabled core business relationships through digital networks. These digital networks are supported by enterprise class technology platforms that have been leveraged within an organisation to support critical business functions and services. I found that some examples of these technology platforms are Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Supply Chain Management (SCM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and Knowledge Management System (KMS), among others (Laudon & Laudon, 2009). I learned that the purpose of these technology platforms is to digitally enable seamless integration and information exchange within the organisation to employees and outside the organisation to customers, suppliers, and other business partners. I realised that through digital networks and information systems, the digital firm can operate core business services and functions continuously and more efficiently. This digital enablement of business processes creates highly dynamic information systems allowing for more efficient and productive management of an organisation. Finally, I learned that technology and information systems serve many critical roles in a digital firm by providing technology-driven capabilities that increase operational performance. For example, digital networks and information systems allow organisations to connect and integrate supply chains in ways that are real-time, uninterrupted, and highly responsive to market conditions. Information systems can increase an organisation's capabilities to effectively manage performance and productivity. |
Explain how you are going to apply what you learned. |
The topic is so interesting since we now live in the digital age. With the rise of e-Commerce, IoT, Cloud computing and the like, the possibilities are endless. I am excited to learn more and one day when I enter the workforce, be involved in developing information systems that will help solve organisational problems. I would like to include in my research interest how I can develop mobile applications that will take advantage of 5G technology that can be used by farmers in Nepal to better manage their crops. |
