Gist of the question: Choosing one topic from week 1 to week 4, Critically discuss how inequality and violence are linked.
Lecture topic chosen for this essay: Class and Economic Violence
Introduction:
(A general discussion about violence and which framework of violence you will be using)
Violence is a contested idea. There is a lot of academic debate around the definitions of violence. Scholars argue that how we understand violence is socially constructed, which means context is important. What we understand as violence is not static or universal. It is subject to change according to culture, social structure, ideologies and so on. Bufacci (2005) discusses two concepts of violence a)minimalist conception and b) comprehensive conception of violence. In this essay I will adopt the comprehensive definition of violence which includes indirect and invisible forms of violence. In particular, I will be analysing the topic of food insecurity to demonstrate how class inequality is linked to violence.
Essay Body: the essay body is divided into two sections in this example. Each section can have one or more than one paragraphs within them. No need to label the subheadings as section 1/section 2- this is for your understanding. Instead you can use subtitles that speak to the content of the section.
Section 1: Discussion of theory/concepts: Structural Violence (or whatever concept you have chosen for analysis)
(find definitions of structural violence from course readings, and paraphrase them here, with references)
Structural violence is defined as forms of violence embedded in the social and economic structures of society.(expand based on readings)
Section 2: Analysis and Discussion
(use the theory/concepts to analyse your chosen topic. Try to include course readings in the analysis)
For this analysis I have chosen the media story food banks see 165% rise in demand (need to reference the media item using APA style). This news story shows that the number of families and people facing food insecurity has more than doubled in recent times. On the other hand, research suggests that tens of thousands of tonnes of food are wasted by supermarket giants every year.
Using Marxist theory, it can be seen that issues such as food insecurity are disproportionately impacting poor and working-class communities. In other words, within a capitalist society, food insecurity and hunger are forms of structural violence that impact economically weaker sections of society. The high cost of food coupled with low wages leads to food deprivation for the working class, despite abundance of food. According to Galtung (1996, as cited in Ray, 2011) this is a classic example of structural violence.
The concept of social murder (Engels, 2009) can also be applied in this context. People who suffer from food insecurity, can have health impacts due to malnourishment which may lead to health complications and early death for poor people etc

Section 4: Conclusion
(Summary of the main arguments.)
Through this discussion about the rising demand for food banks and food insecurity among poor and working class people, I have demonstrated how inequality and violence are linked.

Summary of the question: Choosing one topic from week 1 to week 4, Critically discuss how inequality and violence are linked.
Topic chosen: Dawn Raids
Introduction:
(a general introduction about violence catered to your topic + indicate what you are going to do in the essay, for example, as follows)
How we understand violence is socially constructed. This means, the cultural, economic, and political contexts are important determinants in what we understand as violence, and whether societies accept certain forms of violence as normal or necessary. Often, forms of direct violence can become normalised or justified through mainstream discourses in media, politics, policy etc. The topic chosen to demonstrate the link between inequality and violence within this essay is the Dawn Raids of mid-seventies in New Zealand. During the Dawn Raids, Pasifika immigrant communities were terrorised at their homes by police raids (direct violence) which happened at dawn. Here, racial inequality constructed through colonial narratives is one of the key reasons for the violence that manifested within the dawn raids.
Essay Body: the essay body is divided into two sections in this example. Each section can have one or more than one paragraphs within them. The most important section is the analysis section. So maybe you can have 3 or 4 paraphs there. Organise the essay accordingly. No need to label the subheadings as section 1/section 2- this is for your understanding
Section 1: Key concept: Institutional Racism (or whatever concept you have chosen for analysis)
(find definitions of institutional racism from course readings, and paraphrase them here, with references)
See Braveman et al (2022) under additional readings in week 3.
Section 2: Analysis
(use the theory/concepts to analyse your chosen topic. Try to include course readings in the analysis. For example, see below)
According to postcolonial scholars, colonial systems of knowledge led to the dichotomous construction of the world into a civilised western world and primitive/savage non-western world (Said, 1978; Young, 2003). This is one of the key processes through which racial inequality as we see it today was constructed. The construct of racial hierarchy was then used as a justification for the exploitation of colonised peoples as cheap labour (eg. Trans Atlantic slave trade, indentured labour schemes). This process can be seen continued in the post World War II period, and even today. After WWII Pacific Islanders were welcomed to NZ to occupy low-wage work in the post war nation building process.
The dismantling of traditional economies in the Pacific Islands and the integration of Pacific Islands into global capitalism has made these small island nations dependent on regional colonial powers for economic security and livelihood. (connect to history of dawn raids)
[Paraphrase key arguments/insights from Anae (2020) chapter 5 on the dawn raids. ]
Within New Zealands settler colonial knowledge systems, Pacific Islanders are therefore conceptualised as undesirable immigrants, or as a disposable, second-class workforce [see additional reading Stasiulis, 2020]
Section 4: Conclusion
(Summary of the main arguments.)
Through this discussion which critically analyses the social processes leading up to and normalising the violence meted upon Pasifika families during the Dawn Raids, I have demonstrated how inequality and violence are linked.
