LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

One who can promote health through prevention and intervention exemplifies the role of the dental hygienist in health care. Possessing and applying the knowledge of the theory of health, health behaviour and the mechanisms for change is the key to health promotion in the dental practice. Through this assignment, you will illustrate all of these key concepts.

There has been renewed emphasis within the government on oral health promotion in the conceptual role of the dental hygienist. This role is expanding quickly in working with the population levels within community groups.

Your role within this assignment is to explore one barrier to oral health promotion. Pick a public health issue or oral health problem that you feel requires further development in health education, health promotion and advocacy. You are required to examine the problem, see the current picture within Canada and provide your insight for future direction. The report will detail what measures can be taken to help solve the problem and improve the oral health of our communities

Provide a reference list of all your resources that you have used. (APA style). A minimum of 10 evidence-based resources must be used.

Grading value- 25%Investigate in detail an area within dentistry, which is seen within public health as a burden of disease. This may be related to any area within health education, health promotion or disease prevention. Once you have identified and examined a public health issue/oral health problem, as a dental hygienist it is our responsibility to help put our efforts together and solve the problem.

In order to successfully complete this assignment, please follow the criteria below:

Discuss the critical oral health issue/concern within the community which you have chosen to investigate and provide the reasoning behind your choice

Describe in detail the research and epidemiological data that indicates the critical oral health issue within the community. Display the information provided in both words and graphics. This should outline all the key identifying challenges as well as difficulties surrounding this oral health concern.

Consider the determinants of health that relate to this specific concern/problem. Discuss the risks and reasoning behind this. Provide epidemiological data which support your arguments.

Determine what efforts (stakeholders, government officials, and associations) are being made in our oral health care system to help resolve this concern. Are there policies surrounding them? Have they been effective? What is being done? What are the gaps that still have to be considered? Are there other countries that have set priorities and regulations for addressing the problem? If yes, why is Canada not participating?

Describe the measures and programs that you could suggest to be developed.

This area can be considered through numerous options from which you have been educated throughout your courses and knowledge from the dental hygiene program here at Durham College.

Areas to consider include:

Political forum- advocacy, policy development, association relationships, business ventures as independent dental hygienists,public health forum, educational development within schools, private company funding, media development, and absolutely anything else which you can think of..
