Analyse long term performance and protection issues when stainless steel 316 (SS316) is used as a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination
plant pipeline material; and when aluminium alloy AA2024-T3 is used as an aircraft skin material.
You are required to independently write a report in no more than 1000 words (A report of approximately 800 words is recommended) to analyse and justify
popular material selections in the desalination and aircraft industries. You need to carry out literature research and make resourceful and appropriate use of
your chemistry, physical and materials knowledge. You may also need to find and use relevant materials property data and charts from the literature in
order to address the following specific questions:
1. Identify and explain three major long term failure issues and mechanisms when SS316 is used as material for the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO)
desalination plant pipeline (2 marks);
2. Identify and explain three major long term failure issue and mechanisms when aluminium alloys such as AA2024-T3 is used as materials for
aircraft skins and structures (2 marks).
3. Identify and explain two common technologies for protecting SWRO desalination plant pipeline from corrosion, with particular focus on external
corrosion issues. Comment, with reasonable justification, on potential future materials and corrosion prevention methods that could be used to
improve durability of SWRO desalination plant pipelines (5 marks).
4. Identify and explain two common technologies for protecting AA2024-T3 aircraft skins and structures from corrosion. Comment, with reasonable
justification, on potential future materials and corrosion prevention methods that could be used to improve durability of aircraft skins and structures,
with particular focus on external corrosion issues (5 marks).
