The Sustainable City Vision – Imagining Future Cities - requires that you integrate elements of the materials covered in the unit into a coherent vision or perspective of the key features of what a future city might look like.

Imagine that your Government has decided that it wants to become a world leader in urban sustainability and future cities and wants to explore the establishment of a “future city” somewhere in your country that would ultimately be able to accommodate around a million people. A multidisciplinary team has been set up to work out the broad vision for this new city. You are the leader of the team established to develop this blueprint for the city. Your task is to describe and justify the details of a blueprint for this ‘future city’.

There are 2 options for this assignment:

Option 1: A New Future City - explore the establishment of a “future city” somewhere in your country – the task is to describe and justify the details of a blueprint for this ‘future city’.

Option 2: Retrofitting the Future City into the existing fabric – the task is to describe and justify the details of a blueprint for retrofitting the ‘future city’ into the existing urban fabric.

For both options, drawing on the material in this unit, and using your philosophy and imagination, provide a detailed description of the kind of future city you would build or retrofit.

Aspects that need to be included are:

  1. A short discussion on the history of the evolution of cities through time and their experiences and problems, all of which have led you to your urban blueprint for the new city.
  2. A description of where you would locate the new city and its relationship to other existing urban developments. Using maps to assist in describing the location is required.
  3. Policy options and technological features of the city you are proposing with regards to:
    • Urban form and density, including elements of urban greenery
    • Transport systems (car vs public transport vs walking vs cycling levels)
    • Energy systems
    • Water systems
    • Food systems
    • Waste systems
  4. Reference specific economic, environmental and social (including cultural) aspects of the city.
  5. Reference to relevant literature is required to support your features. Reference to current frameworks for sustainable cities would be highly valued, such as Green Star Communities, LEED, One Planet Living etc.
  6. Your plan needs to be credible to decision-makers. You are not required to concern yourself with how the city will be financed but rather to provide the ideal vision of a sustainable future city. You will, however, need to refer to matters of the likely economic efficiency of your visionary city (e.g., infrastructure systems) compared to the current suburban model of cities in your country.
  7. You are encouraged to use illustrative materials such as photos, conceptual diagrams, and maps of your proposed city features.

Format of the report
