Topic : What's the experience of Bhutanese student studying overseas?
All the literature retrieved from each database should be shared. (eg: PsycINFO : 200, Pubmed : 400 etc).
The first assessment is a structured literature review (SLR) divided into two parts. Part 1 is due on 18/09/2024 and Part 2 is due on 01/10/2024. The total word count is a 4000-word (+/- 10%, excluding references) for the complete Structured Literature Review and is worth 60% of the total mark for this unit. The aim of a literature review is to provide a synthesis of the existing research that has contributed to the current understanding and knowledge related to an area of your healthcare practice.
The review will explain what this research has found, the limitations of the research and existing gaps in the literature yet to be filled yet to be filled, i.e., what further research is required to advance knowledge in the field to enhance best practice and the implications for clinical practice.
Part 1: Develop a Research Question and Search Strategy (30%)
This is an individual written assignment.
2000 words (+/- 10%, excluding references).
Research question: Each student is required to develop a research question, conduct a comprehensive search and a quality appraisal of retrieved literature. You should provide a background of your selected topic, a clear discussion of how the research question is developed, the purpose statement and the research question.
Instructions:
Provide a clear and concise title of your SLR.
Provide an introduction of the selected topic using available literature.
Provide a purpose statement to describe the question to be addressed in the literature search. Formulate a research question that specifically describes what you would like to know about this topic.
Search strategy: Each student is required to provide a search strategy used to locate literature on the topic described in the research question. You are then required to undertake the search using databases provided by the Library and document the search results. You should provide the details of how the search terms were developed, the specific parameters of the search, the search process, and search results.
Instructions:
Use the PICOT method to specify concepts of interest from the research question, and then map each concept of interest to identify search terms.
Document the databases used. Specify whether other sources (e.g. grey literature) were also accessed/searched and whether manual searching was also conducted.
Specify the search limits applied to the search e.g. dates, language, human studies etc.
List the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. Based on your research question developed, criteria may include population characteristics and diagnoses, types of interventions, outcome measures and types of studies and may be restricted to primary research only, or specific methodologies.
Describe search process and document the search process using a PRISMA flow diagram, including
o Number of articles retrieved
o Number of duplicate articles removed
o Number of articles screened title and abstract
o Number of articles excluded after title and abstract screening
o Number of articles for eligibility check
o Number of articles excluded after eligibility check
o Number of articles for quality appraisal
o Number of articles excluded after quality appraisal
o Number of articles included in the literature review
Provide a summary of the search results.
Quality appraisal: Each student is required to conduct a quality appraisal of the retrieved literature. Quality appraisal will assist in excluding papers that report studies that are poorly designed and/or executed or inadequately described, meaning that the results may be biased or affected by study limitations. You are required to use recognised checklists or appraisal instruments and provide a summary statement of quality appraisal results. The process and result of quality appraisal can also be illustrated on the PRISMA flow diagram above.
Instructions:
Select quality appraisal tools. There are many tools for conducting a quality appraisal of literature, e.g., the Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP), Levels of Evidence scoring systems, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and Cochrane Review Tools.
A summary of critical appraisal. e.g., the number and characteristics of included articles.
Data extraction:
Document a summary table of selected articles with headings, including:
o Citations: Author, year & country
o Purpose
o Research design
o Sample size & sites
o Data collection & analysis
o Key findings
o Results of quality appraisal
Part Two: Critical Literature Review (30%)
This is an individual written assignment.
2000 words (+/- 10%, excluding references).
You must submit Part 2 with your Part 1 as a whole document (Part 1 wont be marked again)
Submission due Friday 29/09/2024 at 1200 hours (AWST)
This is a written assessment in which you are to provide a critique of the final included articles in your structured literature review. Only articles specified in the summary table, retained following quality appraisal, should be included in the critique.
The literature review should not summarise the literature, but rather should be a critical synthesis of the literature. The review can be organised using headings about the main issues addressed in the literature. The review should conclude with recommendations for future research, practice and policy, if relevant.
Instructions
There are three main sections in Part Two: Results, Discussion and Conclusion. It is optional to add Limitations and Recommendations if relevant.
Results: Incorporating the main themes/results identified from your literature review. The body should contain themed headings. You are required to submit your Part 1 with Part 2 together as a whole document. 14
Discussion: Interpreting the results of synthesis in the light of other related literature. Subheadings are recommended to help organize your discussion. The limitations of your review could be included in this section if relevant.
Conclusion: Summarizing the findings from the literature discussed and outline the existing gaps and recommendations for further research.
