    B49GE

  • Country :

    Australia

1. Part A

1.1. Objective

By completing the first part of the WBL activity for this course, you will gain the understanding and fulfil the requirements of the following knowledge and skills:

  • Electrical motor operation, testing and selection.
  • Electrical motor replacement approach.
  • Interpreting International Electro technical Commission (IEC) motor nameplates.

1.2. Project Scope

The project has two parts: evaluating motor energy efficiency opportunities and interpreting IEC motor nameplates.

Procedure

  1. Create an inventory of motors in your workplace and define a threshold for long hours of operation (e.g. 1000 hours per year, consult with your Electrical Department as appropriate).
  2. Select a minimum of two motors operating above that threshold and running at a fixed speed with a constant load.
  3. For the motors chosen, take a picture of the nameplate, IF SAFE TO DO SO. Else, an illustration of the nameplate is sufficient.
    1. For each nameplate field, the following shall be required:
      • Definition and field value
      • Explanation of the different rating codes used for the field in question.
      • Formulas utilized for calculations associated with the field.
      • If the field is vendor’s information specific, provide an explanation based on the motor catalogue.
    2. Based on the nameplate information, determine, or calculate the motor:
      • Efficiency
      • Torque
      • Slip
      • Starting current
      • Find out if the stat or is connected in star or delta formation. If so, what is the nameplate information telling us.
      • Determine if the motor protection rating is adequate for ambient conditions.
Note: If calculations cannot be provided, provide a justification.
  4. In consultation with your electrical department, determine the motor load and describe the method used in determining the load.
  5. Propose a replacement plan for the motor(s) selected.
    1. Select a new motor that would be operating at the same conditions but with better or premium efficiency than the existing one (refer to appendix 1 of the Project Appendices document). This will be a replacement-in-kind: not with an identical motor but with an alternative that meets the original design specification and improves motor efficiency.
    2. Determine Annual Cost Savings (refer to appendix 2).
    3. Provide an economic justification (refer to appendix 3).
    4. Elaborate on the business case for the replacement of the motor

2. Part B

2.1. Objective

By completing the second part of the WBL activity for this course, you will gain the understanding and fulfil the requirements of the following knowledge and skills:

  • Electrical Drives operation, specification, and selection

2.2. Project Scope

  1. Design an appropriate type of drive to regulate the motor (in part 1) as required. If the motor is not regulated, we assume the need to regulate it; hence the need for an appropriate drive for the regulation (stating the variables that need to be regulated).
  2. If already controlled, then, a report on the drive being used, its working principles, and the technical concerns evaluated.
