BUSM4612 Project Management Assessment : Case Study

Assessment details

Building on Assessment 1, you are a project manager on a significant project, and are now required to prepare the relevant documentation for the project budget, resources and procurement. Base your responses on current recommended practice as described in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK),contemporary literature and personal research related to the case study project.

The focus is on selecting and applying appropriate theories, tools, and techniques – not on how accurate your budget, resources, and procurement strategies are. Additional to this documentation, you will also write a reflection on your involvement in the 'case study activities' relating to your case study. These 'case study activities' are integrated into the course content in Weeks 3, 4 and 5. While you are not graded as a group, the discussion is designed to simulate the experience of working in a project team to help strengthen the quality of your plan. The 'case study activities' can be used to raise questions and share possible solutions and also work together to explore the best ways to manage your project. Read your project case study carefully, which is available on the Assessment page in Canvas.

Plan structure

Your project plan should include the following sections in a report format. Please refer to the RMIT Learning Lab to learn what is expected for report writing.

Note: A word count is only recommended for the self-reflection component of the assessment as word count can vary for project plans depending on the type of case study you have chosen.

2. Summary
3. Introduction
4. Budget: Develop an appropriate budget for the case study project.

   Include details of all the assumptions and methods you have made in preparing this budget.

5. Resources: Estimate the resources required for the successful completion of the project.

   You should identify all the stakeholders and identify potential resourcing organisations that will need careful management. You should also identify the numbers or quantities of the resources needed and other relevant factors identified in your readings. Identify tools and techniques that might be used here.

6. Procurement techniques and methods: Estimate the procurement techniques and methods needed to acquire the necessary resources for the successful completion of the project.

   You should identify the procurement needs, and you should also identify all the stakeholders and potential resourcing organisations that will need careful management. While undertaking these tasks, make sure that you also identify the human resources that might be needed here. As you work through these three tasks, identify any areas where you do not yet have sufficient information and may need to ask further questions from your project sponsor.

7. Self-reflection: Write a self-reflection on the 'case study activities' (250 words)

   You will participate in 'case study activities' during Week 3, 4 and 5 and use the information shared in these guided activities to work on your assignment. You are required to participate and contribute with your own ideas, read your peers' responses, and then reflect on how these activities have contributed to some of the decisions you made in relation to your project plan.

In your reflection, you will consider how the 'case study activities' may or may not have influenced your decisions. This can include how your peers may have challenged your initial assumptions for your project plan. You could also consider if you have developed a different approach to these 'case study activities' for this assessment compared to assessment 1. For example, have you tried different ways of communicating, sharing or discussing challenges to get the most of these group activities?

Your plan should conclude with the self-reflection; however you may reference the group discussion as an integrated part of your plan if it is helpful for you. You must reference the discussion posts using RMIT Harvard. You may reference your own posts.
