Assessment 3:

Case Study Report (40%)

Due: end of week 12

Aim and Objectives of Assessment 3

This Case Study Report aims to assist students to familiarise themselves with International and Australian Standards regarding Quality in construction projects, practice their knowledge on specific topics related to Quality Management Systems and provide solutions based on their learning.

The objectives of this assignment are to encourage students to undertake further:

  • research in quality to better understand its importance in construction projects

  • workplace orientated learning in support of all learning materials provided by this unit and apply their new knowledge to specific situations.

Assessment 3 Description

Assessment 3 consists of two parts:

  • Part A, where students should describe how ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems can help construction organisations to deliver quality projects and address risks, financial, technical, legislative etc including modern slavery.

  • Part B, in which students need to locate and analyse a case study from the Australian construction sector, were safety concerns raised due to significant defects. Students can use any example from the local construction industry (residential, commercial, infrastructure but NOT related to mining or manufacturing) including one from their own experience and propose how the defects and safety concerns would be avoided or minimised through the embracement of the aforementioned ISO Systems and the use of advanced technology.

Should students face a difficulty to locate a suitable case study, they can discuss with their Tutor a suitable case study; alternatively, students can discuss and analyse the case of 'The Opal Tower' in NSW but it is not mandatory, though. It is worth clarifying here that only students who will locate a suitable case study by themselves, they will receive 10% as per Criterion 1 of the Marking Rubric.

Due Date for Submission:

Students must submit their Assessment 3 via Turnitin by the end of Week 12, which is Sunday 18 August 2024 no later than 23.59 AWST. The report should be submitted as a Word document (.doc format) and NOT as a PDF or image file format.

The Case Study report should be approx. 3,000 words (+,- 10% tolerance; excluding Bibliography, Table of Contents, Cover page and Captions of figures, Appendix) and may have the following layout:

  • Curtin Cover Sheet Title Page

  • Executive Summary

  • PART A: WHS and Quality Management Systems in Construction

  • Recommendations

  • Conclusions
