Assessment Task 2: Project Portfolio

Information for students

In this task, you are required to demonstrate your skills and knowledge by working through a number of activities and completing and submitting a project portfolio.

You will need access to:

  • a suitable place to complete activities that replicates an ICT environment and includes network infrastructure (including wireless hardware and software), technical requirements for the network, wireless networks and diagnostic equipment and standards.
  • your learning resources and other information for reference
  • Project Portfolio template

Ensure that you:

  • review the advice to students regarding responding to written tasks in the IT Works Student User Guide
  • comply with the due date for assessment which your assessor will provide
  • adhere with your RTO’s submission guidelines
  • answer all questions completely and correctly
  • submit work which is original and, where necessary, properly referenced
  • submit a completed cover sheet with your work
  • avoid sharing your answers with other students.

Assessment information

Information about how you should complete this assessment can be found in Appendix A of the IT Works Student User Guide. Refer to the appendix for information on:

  • where this task should be completed
  • how your assessment should be submitted.

Note: You must complete and submit an assessment cover sheet with your work. A template is provided in Appendix B of the Student User Guide. However, if your RTO has provided you with an assessment cover sheet, please ensure that you use that.

Activities

Complete the following activities:

  1. Carefully read the following:
This assessment task requires you to design two enterprise wireless local area networks (WLAN). You can complete this project based on the networks, equipment and information provided by your assessor or for a business that you are working for.
If you choose to complete the project based on a business of your choice, it is important that you can access a network infrastructure, network technical requirements and diagnostic equipment and standards. Speak to your assessor to get approval if you want to base this on an organization of your choice.
You will be collecting evidence for this unit in a Project Portfolio. The steps you need to take are outlined below. Before you begin, complete page 4 of your Project Portfolio.
  2. Determine WLAN needs.
Prior to commencing the task, you are to meet with the client to find out about WLAN needs. This will ensure you have all of the information you need to design two enterprise wireless local area networks (WLAN).
If you are completing this in your RTO, the client will be your assessor and you will meet with them to get the information you need.
If you are completing this based on your own organization, the client may be internal clients or externals client who you will need to meet with to find out requirements (remember you need to determine two WLANs so this may be more than one client and meeting). You will need to provide a video or audio recording of this meeting so that your assessor can confirm your oral communication skills.
At the meeting, you will need to find out about:
    • scope of the work to be completed
    • details of current network layout and parameters and network service provider
    • current and future operational needs that impact on the WLANs
    • budget available
    • timeline requirements.
During the meeting, your assessor will be looking to see that you can demonstrate oral communication skills including:
    • speaking clearly and concisely using relevant language.
    • using questioning techniques to confirm information
    • using active listening techniques to confirm information.
At the meeting, make sure you ask questions to find out the information you need, as well as discuss some preliminary ideas and thoughts you have on the client’s needs. You should ensure that all arrangements for accessing the site are confirmed at the meeting by finding out the information you need to.
Following the meeting, work on Section 1 of your Portfolio to include the information that you have been provided at the meeting.
You will also need to prepare to complete the site survey in the next activity. Section 1 of your Project Portfolio will also document your preparations.
In preparation for the site visit, you will also need to:
    • arrange access to the site
    • identify and document the diagnostic tools and measurement processes in preparation for the site visit
    • identify and document the test equipment you will use, as well as checking it is calibrated.
    • identify and document the safe working practices you will follow.
plan and document how you will minimize disruption to the client onsite.
Finalize Section 1 of your Project Portfolio.
  3. Site survey.
You are now to conduct the site survey as relevant to each WLAN. This will involve:
    • Using the diagnostic tools, measurement processes and test equipment you identified previously.
    • Applying safe working practices.
    • Working with minimum disruption to client.
    • Identifying and documenting physical infrastructure, building use, aesthetics and other identified issues that may impact on future network performance and acceptance by the client.
    • Identifying radio frequency interference issues and sources of such, as well as possible solutions.
    • Identifying other interference issues including topographic barriers, climate, obstacles, transmission distances and construction materials.
    • Assessing the optimum location and position of the wireless access points to be installed, as well as repeaters, routers and other equipment required for the WLAN.
As you complete the survey, make notes on your work as you will need to document the results in Section 2 of your Project Portfolio.
Complete Section 2 of your Project Portfolio.
  4. Design enterprise WLANs.
Following your site survey you are to design each WLAN. Your design must address:
    • An outline of the WLAN design that will cater for the amount and type of network traffic.
    • A diagram that shows the proposed network layout including access points, repeaters, routers and other equipment, as well as cabling.
    • Frequency to be used.
    • Testing/modelling to be conducted.
    • You will also need to conduct tests on your design based on the testing/modelling you identified and include this in this Section of the Portfolio.
Once you have tested your design and are happy to move forwards you will also need to:
    • select, test and finalize vendor products and equipment
    • document costs and compatibility
    • prepare an Implementation Plan.
Work on Section 3 of your Project Portfolio.
To finalize your network design, submit the work you have completed so far in Section 3 to your assessor. Your assessor will provide you with feedback which you must review and modify, as well as use to update your design.
Complete Section 3 of your Project Portfolio.
