CHECK LIST FOR THE PART 1 REPORT

ABSTRACT

  • I have written the Abstract briefly summarising the research area, Method (e.g., design, how many participants), Results (no numbers or statistics just briefly described what findings were observed), a sentence regarding any theoretical/practical implications.

INTRODUCTION CHECKLIST

  • I have briefly outlined the topic area (i.e., what ostracism is) and why it is a problem (e.g., some relevant statistics or facts would be useful here).

  • I have included at least one main psychological theory (e.g., temporal need threat model) and applied this to the topic area

  • I have discussed key empirical research studies (with citations) including the key paper of Waldeck et al. (2024). Tip: Aim for peer reviewed journal articles. The more recent, the better!

  • I have included a rationale for the project (i.e., a justifiable reason to conduct the study).

  • I have included the aims and explicitly stated my hypothesis/hypotheses.

METHOD CHECK LIST

Design:

What is the design? (e.g., a cross-sectional correlation design)

What are the predictor variables?

What is the outcome variable?

Participants:

Have you included total number of participants and mean and SD for their age?

Have you included the breakdown of gender? (i.e., how many males? How many females? Were there any participants that selected another option?)

Where were participants from?

How were they recruited?

Measures

What questionnaire measures were administered?

How did participants respond to the measures?

Why were these measures chosen? Did they have good reliability and validity in past research?

  • Procedure: describe the procedure of the study. Remember each stage of the survey (starting from the information sheet and consent). Use passive voice and past tense (Participants were first asked). Dont forget it is important to be clear on your ethics protocols in this section (e.g., did participants have the right to withdraw? were participants debriefed at the end of the survey?)

RESULTS CHECK LIST

  • DESCRIPTIVES

- Are the Means and Standard Deviations of your measures presented?

- Have you presented your bivariate correlations between your variables?

* Note it is advised to present both your Means and SD for your variables, and your correlations in the same table, and then provide a brief narrative of the correlations. You do not need to interpret the Means and SDs.

  • Assumption Checking

-You may want to check for normal distribution of your measures by visually inspecting your histogram/s (e.g., does there appear to be a bell-shaped curve?) or report skewness and kurtosis z-scores (e.g., are the z scores within the range of +/- 1.96?) or report your K-S test (e.g., is p >.05?).

-Have you checked and reported your other regression assumptions? (e.g., is your durbin Watson value close to 2? Have you checked multi-collinearity [VIF < 10> .20?)

  • Multiple Regression Analysis

Note It is expected that you conduct a forced entry regression analysis. However, if you want to do a hierarchical regression analysis, this is fine, but your introduction and hypotheses will need to set this up correctly.

- Have you reported your adjusted R?2; to show how much variance in the outcome variable was accounted for by all your predictors?

- Have you provided your results from the ANOVA table to show whether the model was significant (i.e., the predictors account for a significant amount of variance in the outcome?). Dont forget to provide the F ratio, dfs, and p value.

- Have you provided a report of each predictor and accounting for the direction, strength, and significance of the relationship? (e.g., there was a strong negative relationship between x and y).

- Have you provided your standardised beta coefficients (?), and p values to support the above statements for each predictor?

DISCUSSION CHECK LIST

  • Have you started with explaining whether the hypotheses were supported or not?

  • Have you linked the current results with the theories and studies presented in the Introduction? Have you discussed these results?

  • Are there any alternative explanations for the findings?

  • Have you included strengths and limitations of the current study?

  • Have you included suggestions for future directions (i.e., what could researchers do improve upon this study or extend it?)

  • Have you considered any practical implications of the study?

  • Have you included a conclusion paragraph separately?

Additional areas to consider

  • Have you added a front sheet and stated your word count on the front sheet?

  • Have you included a reference list?

  • Are the references you have provided consistent with APA 7th edition in the main body of your work (in-text citations) and in the reference list? (Tip: aim to ensure you use hanging references in the reference list. Highlight all your references in your reference list > right click and select paragraph > click on special and select hanging.)

  • Have you used 1.5 line or double line spacing throughout? Highlight all your text in the main body of your document > right click and select paragraph > click on line spacing and select 1.5 lines or double)

  • Have you proof-read your work to check for spelling or grammatical mistakes? (Tip: use the spell checker on word click Review on the taskbar at the top of the screen and then click on Spelling and Grammar. You may also consider installing Grammarly which will offer suggestions on how to improve grammar where it detects problems: Grammarly: Free Online Writing Assistant). If you have used assistive software like this, then this needs to be mentioned in your reference list.

  • Have you proof-read your work to ensure you are not using any informal language or phrasing?

p.s. dont forget, this checklist is exclusively for Part 1 of your Portfolio. You will have a separate checklist for Part 2.
